I was so disappointed to find out that Pandemic Studios shut its doors after the release of this game. This was one hell of a way to go out. It's incredibly creative in both its story and overall design, and the plot is fantastic. Sean Devlin is probably one of the funniest, most charming, and most memorable protagonists I've ever played as. He's a sarcastic Irishman who never takes the Nazis seriously, and that attitude makes every mission a blast. What really makes this game stand out is its atmosphere. Watching occupied Paris slowly transform from a bleak black and white city into a vibrant, colorful world as you liberate districts is still one of the coolest visual mechanics I've ever seen in an open world game. It gives every act of sabotage a real sense of purpose instead of just checking icons off a map. The graphics may only be decent by today's standards, but the gameplay completely overshadows that. Climbing rooftops, disguising yourself as a Nazi, planting explosives, hijacking vehicles, and blowing up enemy installations never gets old. It borrows ideas from games like Grand Theft Auto, Assassin's Creed, and Mercenaries, yet somehow manages to create its own identity through its unique setting and style. Sure, it's rough around the edges. The driving can feel clunky, the stealth isn't always reliable, and there are a few technical hiccups, but none of that stopped me from having an absolute blast. The freedom to approach objectives however you want and unleash complete chaos makes the game endlessly entertaining. This is one of the most underrated open world games of the Xbox 360 and PS3 era and a reminder of how creative Pandemic Studios really was. It's an absolute smash hit in my eyes, and I still hope one day another studio revives this forgotten gem and finally gives it the sequel it deserves.

Since my hometown in Ukraine was occupied, I have become interested in examples of occupation during WWII. I was curious to find similarities and differences between the current Russian occupation and the Nazi occupation in the past. That is how I discovered the Warsaw Uprising, which I had never learned about in school. One day, I also came across The Saboteur on Steam. Although it was released many years ago, I had never played this game before. For players like me, I would say: don’t judge a book by its cover. The game definitely deserves your attention because of its interesting story and its atmosphere, which is both immersive and dark at the same time. The story takes place in occupied Paris during World War II. The main character, an Irishman named Sean, ends up there not by choice. He loses a close friend, almost like a brother, who is brutally killed by a ruthless Nazi colonel, Kurt Dierker. One day, a resistance fighter named Luc tries to recruit Sean. Their dialogue is thought-provoking: (Sean) "This isn't my country." (Luc) "Does the need for justice end at some line drawn on a map?" After this tense conversation, Sean realizes they share the same goal. He decides to take revenge on Dierker for his loss. Throughout the story, Sean supports the resistance, increasing his influence among the fighters and helping bring change. It is possible to complete missions in stealth mode, but it is not necessary. The main character has a lot of health and fast regeneration, which allows you to play aggressively, almost like Rambo, and create chaos among Nazi soldiers. I would say the game feels like GTA set in 1940s Paris.

Classic game where you kill nazis. There is a lot of things to destroy to make things easier for other missions. Has a neat mechanic when a section of the map shows color the more people that support you. Gives the classic GTA 3 feel. Most importantly though, you kill Nazis.

An old friend I never knew. I want to describe myself as an afficionado of open world games. I have been to Skellige with Geralt, Saint Denis and New Hannover with Arthur, Steelport with the Boss and Night City with V and Johnny. It has been my favorite genre of games ever since I played GTA San Andreas as a teen. Despite that The Saboteur had managed to fly under my radar for the longest time. I can´t exactly tell you why butit took me until 2026 and well after the development studio closed to finally get around to it. What I encountered was gaming comfort food. The game immediately feels familiar when it comes to presentation, gameplay and the loop you will encounter as I have been in this place dozens of times. If I had to liken it to another similar game I would probably compare it to Just Cause 2, just with less slingshotting and parachuting around. In the comfortable shoes of Sean you wage a one man war against the German occupiers in wartime Paris. The game presents a very much trunchated but still beautiful version of Paris from the sweeping vistas of Monmartre to the splendor of the Champs Elysee. An interesting visual indicator of your progress is the state of the world. While occupied parts of the city hang under a heavy pall of darkness and are trapped in eternal night and rain the liberated parts are full of colour and people greet you as they pass you on the street. Gameplay wise this game offers a solid mix between third person cover shooting and parkour as you climb round on the rooftops. Now Sean is by no means Ezio Auditore who climbs up a building in seconds. Everything feels slower and more deliberate, making you pay more attention if anybody is looking while you climb up the facade. The shooting is relatively solid but nothing to write home about with an ok weapon variety that grows as you progress through the game. I had some bugs and crashes here and there but nothing gamebreaking. Most notably the game would crash upon cloing but that was well after progress had been saved. The Saboteur is a great oldie but goodie for fans of the genre and movies like Inglorious Basterds. (As usual this review has been written without the use of AI of any kind)
