Thanks to this game, I created my first Steam account (not this one) roughly 18 years ago. I first saw it with my mother in a MediaMarkt or Saturn, and we decided to buy it because something about the game immediately caught our attention. To this day, I still think the idea behind the game’s core concept is brilliant, and I naturally have a lot of nostalgia attached to this title. The graphics have obviously aged quite a bit by now, although I still think the timeless, comic-book-like art style gives the game a certain charm even today. Unfortunately, the game never received the attention it deserved in my opinion.

Developed by Outerlight Ltd. and published by Blazing Griffin, The Ship: Murder Party remains one of Steam's most unusual multiplayer experiences. Released during an era dominated by traditional arena shooters and military-themed action games, it dared to build its entire identity around social manipulation, stealth, and calculated murder. Set aboard a collection of luxurious ocean liners inspired by the 1920s, the game places players into a deadly contest orchestrated by the mysterious Mr. X. Every passenger aboard is trapped in a twisted game where survival depends as much on observation and patience as it does on pulling a trigger. The central mechanic is brilliantly simple yet endlessly entertaining. Each player receives a target to eliminate while another participant is assigned to hunt them. This creates an ever-present atmosphere of tension where no encounter feels entirely safe. A seemingly harmless guest standing near a staircase may be waiting for an opportunity to strike, while the person casually following you through a dining hall could be your assigned hunter. Unlike most first-person games that reward aggressive play, The Ship encourages restraint. Timing, positioning, and maintaining appearances become the keys to success, turning every match into an unpredictable battle of wits. The game's cruise ships play a significant role in establishing its identity. Lavishly decorated interiors, elegant lounges, restaurants, and private cabins provide a fitting backdrop for the unfolding chaos. Although the Source Engine visuals clearly show their age, the artistic direction continues to hold up surprisingly well. The contrast between the sophisticated environments and the brutal acts committed within them gives the game a distinctive personality. Few titles can match the absurdity of quietly pursuing your quarry through a ballroom while attempting to avoid suspicion from every other guest in attendance. One of The Ship's most memorable features is its character needs system. Players are required to monitor hunger, sleep, and hygiene throughout a match, adding an extra layer of strategy to the experience. Ignoring these needs results in penalties that can leave players vulnerable at the worst possible moments. It is an unconventional mechanic that initially feels out of place, but it ultimately reinforces the game's unique approach to multiplayer design. Managing your physical condition while simultaneously tracking your target and avoiding your pursuer creates a level of multitasking rarely seen in the genre. The game also includes a story-driven tutorial campaign that introduces players to its mechanics and the sinister premise behind Mr. X's murderous entertainment. While the single-player content is relatively brief, it succeeds in establishing the tone and preparing newcomers for the complexities of multiplayer matches. The narrative may not be particularly deep, but it provides enough context to make the entire experience feel like participating in an elaborate mystery novel with deadly consequences. Naturally, The Ship shows its age in several areas. Its interface and controls reflect design conventions from the mid-2000s, and technical issues occasionally remind players of its vintage. More significantly, the multiplayer population is nowhere near what it once was, meaning prospective players will likely need to coordinate games with friends or seek out dedicated community groups. Nevertheless, these limitations are easier to forgive when considering how innovative the title remains. Many modern games have borrowed elements of social deduction and player-driven storytelling, yet few have combined them as effectively as The Ship. What ultimately makes The Ship: Murder Party memorable is its originality. Every session generates stories that feel uniquely personal, whether it is narrowly escaping an assassin in a crowded corridor or executing a flawless plan without attracting attention. The game trusts its systems to create memorable moments rather than relying on scripted events, and that philosophy continues to pay dividends years after release. It stands as an example of how creative ideas can outlast technological advancements and remain relevant long after their initial debut. For players willing to overlook its age and gather a group of friends, The Ship: Murder Party offers an experience unlike anything else available on Steam. Its combination of stealth, social deduction, and dark humor ensures that it remains a fascinating piece of multiplayer history and a genuinely enjoyable game in its own right. Rating: 8/10

Very good game. I was inspired to buy this after watching Nerdcubed's community Let's Play (took him 14 years btw), and I love it. This game is old, but it holds up well in 2026. The only downsides are that the community server browser doesn't work anymore, and it does not receive any updates from its OG developers. This game will run on just about any PC that can turn itself on. It's also very cheap. 8/10 overall, I like it a lot. There's just minor things about the game I dislike, but they shouldn't stop you from buying it.
