It's very easy to see why this game has its mixed rating. I am coming into this game after numerous patches and updates, so I can't speak for how much more frustrating it would have been had I played it closer to launch. With that being said, the difficulty varies wildly from ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ (that damn spider boss when you are a Kodama), to piss easy (the main antagonist). The platforming is, chunky, to say the least, and navigation, even with the updates, can sometimes be a little unclear. However, I found enough enjoyment in the combat to where it legitimately felt satisfying to get good and effectively dodging and parrying enemy attacks. Assuming you are using a game pad, the emphasis on using the right analog stick for attacks is a bit unorthodox, but I got used to it (you can use a button in combination with different directions, but it's actually easier to just use the right analog stick). Of course, the game's biggest claim to fame is its stop-motion animation and visual style, which is honestly pretty stellar. So, assuming you know what you are getting yourself into, and can handle some jank, I would actually give a soft recommendation for this.

TL;DR: Despite its shortcomings, I’m heartily recommending this game. For the price, it’s a visually stunning adventure with memorable characters that outweigh its clunky combat and occasional lag. If you’re drawn to atmosphere and storytelling, this one’s definitely worth your time. I stumbled upon this game during a sale for less than $3. The beautiful visuals caught my eye, so I watched the trailer. The plot seemed promising too, which left me curious about all the hate this game was getting. And so I tried it out. NGL, there ARE several issues. Combat System: There’s definitely a learning curve. While I'm glad more than mindless button-mashing is required, even when you do get the hang of it, execution feels slow and clunky. (I can imagine how much worse it was before the updates.) As difficulty ramps up, you might find yourself repeating stages because the yokai are fast and your samurai moves like a tank. (And it’s not from lack of skills—ya girl’s at least decent from over three decades of button-mashing training.) Combat is a challenge, but not throw-your-controller-in-rage territory. Performance Issues: The game ran smoothly for about three-quarters of the journey. But once Takeshi makes his comeback, lag starts creeping in every hour or so. Restarting the game fixes it, and with decent specs on my rig, I’m confident it’s not a hardware issue. Buggies: Items that refuse to disappear from inventory, and possibly the worst: bugged save points that refuse to save 😱 HOWEVER... despite these shortcomings, I am still heartily recommending this game. WHY? I have always loved stop-motion animation, and the richly detailed environments create a world steeped in Japanese mysticism that I enjoyed exploring. It's a treat for the eyes. Storytelling is compelling, but the true charm of the game lies with its cast of characters: the stalwart Takeshi, the enigmatic Kitsune, the adorable kodamas who always want to help, and most of all, the brave, little showstopper-Chisai, the ever-lovable and loyal furry potato! Before long, you will find yourself emotionally invested in their stories- enough to overlook any bugs or issues. 🐱For fellow cat people who worry about such things: THE CAT LIVES. (Totally get it, I made sure first too. LOL)🐱 I enjoyed every moment with this game. It's one of those titles where you can feel the devs poured their hearts and soul into. 8.5/10. Would happily bump it to 10/10 if there's another update addressing these issues.

First off, I finished the game after the third big update, and even then, the performance was poor at times (I can remember three parts where it happened, always when the scenario had a heavy fog effect). I found a bug with a lever that's been happening for quite some time, and I had to delete some files in my save folder just to progress. The combat is funny—I enjoyed it—but at times it was frustrating. The enemy is always walking backwards, and you almost never land your full combo because of that, and the archers are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ snipers; if you come across one and try to run, they will keep on firing at you even though they're not on the screen. So why am I recommending this game full of bugs? Because it’s fun. It has a lot of soul; you can see all the work the devs have been through. This game is worth playing, if not for the entertaining story, then for the amazing stop-motion animations. I loved what they did and I hope they can continue. You’ll enjoy it if you want an experience, more than just a polished platformer full of flashy mechanics. People have been creating mods to make ♥♥♥♥♥♥ games work and praising them as good games, so I see no problem in recommending an indie game with flaws. You think it's unforgiving? Go ahead, use some cheats and keep on going. It’s a fun experience, and it’s worth it on sale.

The stop-motion visuals are very well done and do most, if not all, the heavy lifting in making this game appealing. I'm giving this a recommendation only because the artstyle is so cool, but beware if you're expecting a well designed gameplay experience to go with it. My critique regarding the combat : [*]Enemies break out of hitstun at random, making any fight with more than one opponent nearly impossible. This forces you to inch across the level in order to aggro one enemy at a time. [*]The parry is essentially useless. It stuns and pushes enemies outside your attack range, however by the time you close the distance, the stun has already worn off. It's much more efficient to just full guard and counter attack for most situations, making most of the fights extremely tedious. [*]The majority of the unlocked moves have too long of a wind-up time, or are too short range. Enemies constantly dodge backwards or get pushed away by your initial combo, making 90% of the skills not worth using. [*]Most of the gameplay is trial-and-error. You walked forward too fast? You aggro'd 3 enemies and die. You pushed a box into a corner? You needed to position it correctly to jump to a ledge and there's no way to get it out of the corner - die and try again. It's a brutal slog to get to the final boss, but if your a masochist and want to see all the cool stop-motion artwork, it can be a fun game to complete over a weekend.

Despite its flaws, I’d recommend The Spirit of The Samurai. The depth of the combat and the intriguing characters kept me engaged and leading to a positive experience. https://youtu.be/gWb7J8kXWeY?si=g4w9X-QSGz0YUxQk
