Assuming you have no DLC packs, the game starts out slow. You begin as a level 1 hunter with a measly .243 rifle, only the best placed shots can take down medium sized game. You might spend a lot of time wrapping your head around the game mechanics as well as track a bunch of wounded animals at first, but soon you will start making some money and filling out your perk trees. I was left with a bad impression of the progression system at first but the strength you feel during the mid and late game definitely pays off. At the writing of this review, I have 170 hours of play time. I only have 1 / 19 maps completely explored. I chose to do the Layton Lake District map first (soon I will explain why I regret this decision) and I have that map 100% explored and about 90% of the missions completed, so there is still more work to nickel and dime there as well. I hope this gives an accurate representation of just how much playtime you can get out of one map. I am currently working on exploring the Hirschfelden map and I have it ~60% completed with many missions left to go. At this rate, each of the 19 maps is offering me around 100-150 hours of gameplay, and even if I complete every mission there is nothing stopping me from continuing to hunt on the map. I want to use this last bit here to share a few tips to anyone going into the game fresh. Earlier I stated I played the Layton Lake District map first. In hindsight, I would have much rather done Hirschfelden first because the map has more game animals that can be taken down by your free starting rifle and ammo, as well as many birds that can be hunted with the base shotgun (although this will come at a cost of the weapon itself and ammo). So in my experience, I started off on the harder of the two base maps which lead to me leveling up more slowly but also working harder. If you are playing a new vanilla game with no DLCs, please do yourself a favor and start off with hunting a bunch of Roe Buck and Red Fox on Hirschfelden Reserve. If you are willing to buy DLC weapons and maps, then by all means go crazy and start wherever you wish. My last piece of advice, there are two very powerful perks you want to acquire asap, which is Zeroing and Sight Spotting. Zeroing allows you to change the range your scope is zeroed in at with the press of a button. For example, for rifles it can be cycled between 75 m, 150 m, and 300 m, allowing you to take very precise shots at three preset distances. Sight Spotting allows you to mark and leave an outline on animals temporarily, especially useful when hunting at night. This mechanic can always be achieved with your binoculars, but this perk allows you to avoid the hassle of rotating between your binoculars and firearm, saving precious seconds. So yeah, I like this game a lot. I got a very good vanilla experience from the game before spending about $150 USD on DLC for this game during the summer sale. I would not be surprised if I accumulate 1,000 hours of playtime in the future. I grew up playing Cabela's hunting games on my PS2, then Hunting Unlimited for PC when I was older, and now playing Call of the Wild as an adult feels like the perfect way to progress this hobby. Imagine DayZ with a hundred times more beautiful looking nature. And on top of it you don't have to stress yourself with PvPvE or the survival mechanics. You are just kinda thrown into a world, doing optional story quests, and hunting animals that get in your way – if you feel like it. Don't worry about the weapons or DLCs for now. Get the ATV at best (it's only good for roaming around and quickly unlocking campsites all around the map – afterwards you can fast travel to them) and hop in. The base game maps are lovely. Ignore the meta or "how to play the game correctly". Just try and relax. It's amazing.

I shot an animal 8 times and followed its blood trail long enough to cover a small country... but game pretty and lets me stalk something that's not my neighbor so I'd say its a good trade off.

My husband played this game before I did. He got really into it, and I always wondered why he enjoyed playing it so much and for so long. I would say all the time "it's just a hunting game". Now that's a running joke for us. At the time of this review Im nearing 700 hours in this "just a hunting game". I eventually broke down and got it on a good sale one day so that I could play multiplayer with my husband and spend time with him. I figured even if I didn't like it I got it on a sale so no biggie. I ended up falling in love with it. It's not my type of game at all, yet somehow it has become my most played game on Steam. Most of the maps are absolutely stunning, its incredibly realistic, the animals are vast and beautiful. Its immersive, challenging yet relaxing. Unfortunately you have to buy most of the maps as dlcs, and I usually recommend waiting until a sale and snatching them up, they arent too terribly expensive and so worth it. If youre unsure if you like a map, or dont want to buy one yet, you can go on a multiplayer server and test it out. The stories can be fun, there is plenty of areas to explore and tons of steam achievements. Being able to play in multiple different ways is enjoyable, I can play for half an hour or 10 hours straight. It's just incredible in my opinion. The downsides are sometimes glitches happen, you have to buy a lot of stuff (guns, lodges, rtvs, dogs, etc) separately, but with sales and how much I enjoy the game, they are minor cons.

Very fun game if you like to hunt but it's completely outrageous that all the maps and cool content are sold piecemeal.
