Finished Three Fold Recital, I'll replay it in English and eventually do a spoiler heavy post. It's nothing ground breaking, just a solid, well thought out, witty and fun narrative game. While the mood and the theme is nothing like Fata Morgana, I kept on thinking about how they are both satisfying in a similar way. Phenomenal word economy too, no fillers at any point. Tight and well edited. Essentially it's a mystery written by people who knew why people enjoy mysteries. There isn't a single plot twist that lacked enough information for the audience to pick it up; all the information you need to piece together the story are right there in the beginning. None of the plot twists for the sake of it, or introducing major unexpected element in the last second approach that seems to be plaguing mystery genres. I love how wholesome the three lead characters are. I love how a lot of it is just, two brothers and a sister kicking shit together. I love how the cast have the best possible siblingship, where they don't need to hang out with each other all the time, but they knew each other enough to predict how the others would behave in a situation, and have complete trust and respect to leave the other two to do their stuff, despite that they've been apart for long enough to not know what each other look like anymore. The furry thing. I'm initially uneasy about recommending this as a furry game, as I'm not in the culture and I feel that Chinese folklore Yao-Guai is too different to the subculture to really be comparable. Turned out all three devs are furries in the English sense, so I guess it's at least not misappropriation? The whole thing felt just generally good faithed, wholesome, and respectful. The puzzles mostly acted as a narrative piece as well, which is something I love. IDK how it will work in English though, because the wolf monk is one of the best/worst pun monsters in recent memories. Anyway, highly recommend, but I don't know if I would recommend it to non Chinese audience. I will get back to you re: the English quality.

Taiqing. I don’t think I need to say much more. We all need wholesome best boi Taiqing in our lives. He automatically makes this game a 10/10. …Ah, but I do beg your pardon. You wanted a review of the full game, didn’t you? Allow me to start over… Threefold Recital is an absolutely spectacular video game, and I’d go as far as to say it’s one of the best games I’ve ever played!! The visuals and music are nice, but it’s the amazing and insanely well-written story where this game truly shines. I deeply enjoy this game’s beautiful art style, and all the characters and environments are super detailed and well-drawn and look great! The soundtrack is very nice as well, with some nice melodies and banger tracks. Out of all the music tracks, however, one track stands out to me the most, and that is Taiqing’s piano theme, titled “My Own Way”. This isn’t even my bias for Taiqing speaking; it’s genuinely one of the best, most beautiful piano pieces I’ve ever heard , and it’s heartbreaking in the context in which it plays in game. Now, for the gameplay! Threefold Recital is a fun and compelling visual novel experience with platformer mechanics that are implemented super well! It’s very cute to watch the main characters jump around. I love all of the fun varieties of puzzles scattered around the story, none of them too easy or too hard. My favorite puzzle has to be the sliding puzzle dungeon in the later part of the game! It did a similar kind of thing to Zelda Skyward Sword’s Sky Keep, which had a super innovative and creative sliding puzzle architecture that I LOVE . Threefold Recital’s sliding puzzle dungeon is very similar but more in-depth, and I LOVE it!!! One thing that must be discussed about this game is the charm and quirkiness of all the references and off-brand titles! CANDY BRUSH had me laughing uncontrollably for five minutes!!! And I really love Triratna’s “OBJECTION” moment which is a clear nod to Ace Attorney. (Seriously, whoever drew Triratna’s glorious “OBJECTION” pose deserves a raise.) Of course, we need to talk about the characters as well. I absolutely love the main trio, and it didn’t take long at all to get attached to them! Transia’s sassiness and sarcasm never fails to get a chuckle out of me. I found Triratna very endearing because beneath this monk’s calm and strong exterior, he’s a little bit of a dork with an extensive library of dad jokes! And of course, TAIQING!! I love everything about my boi Taiqing!! In fact, the entire cast of characters in Threefold Recital is fantastic, and the side characters all have a wide variety of personalities, backstories and subplots. Some of my favorites among the side characters are Smarty who is cool, Drab who is eccentric in a fun way, and Johnny Chen who I will never forgive for the things he did to Taiqing . Give me Wai Fai back!!! Naite Maer, however, definitely stands out among the rest of the side characters to me. In fact, I’d say he’s tied with Triratna for my second favorite character spot (Taiqing being first place obviously) . While I absolutely loved his humorous slapstick moments throughout the game, he is such a great and respectable dude, as seen especially during his interaction with Taiqing at the very end of Chapter 2. On the topic of the cast of characters, I liked the ending of this game’s story because it showed every single one of these characters getting a proper conclusion. That, in my opinion, is what a proper video game ending should be like. (Except, uh… was Taiqing ever able to finally pay up his late rent??) Above all else, however, the overall story and plot is where this game shines. There are lots of plot twists and reveals throughout the story, several of which made me go “WHAT!!!” and stand up and walk around, processing what I just learned. And when I stand up and walk around, you know it’s serious. Additionally, several of these reveals are written in such a way that they were right in front of you all along, but you didn’t realize. The true genius of this game’s plot is how it dots little details, some of which you might overlook or dismiss as trivial, throughout the story prior to big reveals. And then they all connect into one ultimate turning point. And this happens again and again until by the end you’re speechless, like I was. That is GENIUS storytelling. And just when I thought this game couldn’t get any better, Harrod and Willie from Mercury Abbey made a cameo together!!! And you can talk to them anytime between chapters! Overall, Threefold Recital is an absolutely fantastic video game with some of the best storytelling I’ve ever seen in any media. And it’s presented with nice music, detailed artwork, and charming puzzles and platformer gameplay! It’s already my top candidate for Game of the Year 2025, and I absolutely recommend that you play it!! Overall Rating: 10/10!!!

So I'm familiar with the devs for... reasons, especially Zohar. I can say that there's so much improvement in his way of storytelling and scope. There was also the clear passion and interest that all the devs manifested through this game. The whole story was cool, but the developer commentary by the end made the project feel much more fulfilling and personal. That said, Threefold Recital is not without its faults. Nothing too jarring or gamebreaking though! Some misspellings (unintentional ones), wrong grammar, minor pacing issues, sometimes too loud or uneven music. I wouldn't go to say this is anything like a masterpiece, but it's a damn heartfelt piece from the devs. It's nice to just play a passion project and witness other people's emotions and perspectives through a game. I can say that I did love my experience here~ From the moment I saw the sprite art, I felt warm feelings and attachment to the style. It's essentially great furry fanservice for my preferences, and I'm proud to admit it. Art design nailed it. Some song pieces are nice. A good number of enjoyable puzzles, nothing too frustrating, really creative ways at times. The story has got to have so many revisions in its storytelling, and I'm proud to see the idea come to a very reasonable conclusion. All of this venture couldn't have been easy. Huge respects. Whether the devs read the comments here or not, I just want to say: Thank you! I had a cool time in your own furry world and I will be willing to wait for any future projects to come to fruition. I greatly appreciate the effort here.

After sitting on it a few days, my opinion is that Threefold Recital is really, really good. If you like adventure games--like Ace Attorney, 13 Sentinels, or King's Quest--you should play it. I know there's furries on the cover art, but you don't need to be a furry; just go in blind. The Ace Attorney games are its most obvious inspiration; the game is divided up into several chapters that each have a mostly self-contained story, and each one is good at building up a mystery and then throwing wild twist at you at the end. In the end, they all tie together and finish everything neatly. The writing is clever and made me genuinely laugh out loud several times, and there are several really great plot twists that I didn't see coming. I was worried that, being an indie Chinese game, the English translation would be really rough, but for the most part it's actually very good; you can tell the writer was a huge fan of Ace Attorney and was trying to mimic its style of wordplay and sense of humor (especially the name puns). I noticed a handful of grammatical errors, which particularly stick out because otherwise the text is very well-written, but they never got in the way of understanding what's going on. One thing I think this game actually does better than Ace Attorney is the variety of gameplay mechanics; each one of the three main characters has a unique ability they use when solving their mysteries, and at first I was worried they'd be overused and would get repetitive, but nearly every time you use them, the game throws some unique mechanics at you and uses them in new ways. It never gets old, and the game has a few really clever puzzles, but it also helpfully gives you the option to skip the harder puzzles if you have trouble with them. If I were to have one serious criticism of it... I feel like the story comes close to saying something profound about the nature of life, art, and memories. You can tell the creators put a lot of thought into it, and it'll make you think about it, too; but the game never quite comes out and states its thesis. It holds its punch in the end just a little bit, maybe because it assumes you'll figure it out on your own; but it definitely does have something to say about all of those things. And a very, very minor complaint is that the cast of characters is almost exclusively male. I mean, it doesn't really matter because gender and romance aren't really important to the story, it's just weird that out of a cast of a few dozen characters, there's only a couple of women. Well, the guys are cute, at least. The soundtrack is really good, too. I'm probably going to have it on in the background for a while. Play it!

For those who see furries in the art and are wary of what this game entails I can safely say that it is nothing sexual or weird as most of the people judge for it's community but in fact insanely narrative and true to what the game is supposed to be. This game is for those who like mystery solving games such as Ace Attorney. You play as three different characters all playing detective on the subject of "ink" and it's origins. Very interactive with some platforming and many mini games all unique enough to keep you interested or thinking. I'm sure most people who played enjoyed the art of the characters are very cute and aesthetically pleasing. This game offers a twist at the end of the story which includes not only the three characters but you as a player as well. This game is definitely one that will stay in my memory in my years to come.
