July 2025
This game is a true monkey's paw moment. I'll start with the negatve. After this game was cancelled several years ago, I was devastated. THPS1+2 was a perfect remake, so of course, I wanted more. Flash forward to 2025 and the game is finally announced and released under a new developer after Vicarious Visions was absorbed. I say this game is a monkey's paw moment because it is a wonderful experience, but there is a fatal flaw that hangs over it: the way that THPS4 was handled. For those unfamiliar with the franchise, the first three games have an arcade-style format: the player is dropped into a level and has two minutes to complete a list of goals. THPS4, on the other hand, featured no timer and players were free to complete goals (which were individually assigned by NPCs) at their own leisure. Because of this, levels also featured many more goals than the previous games. Unfortunately, in THPS3+4, THPS4 is "streamlined" to fit into the classic arcade-style gameplay. This means that many of the goals from the original game are missing and players are now limited by a timer. I can only assume this was a decision made because of some sort of time constraint, because I can't see why else they would make such a controversial choice. Some may argue that the original THPS4's goal format wouldn't have worked alongside THPS3's classic format, but I don't see any real reason that it could not have been done (albeit, the games may not have been as well integrated as the first two were in THPS1+2). However, it is not all bad, as the classic Tony Hawk style of gameplay is amazing, so the THPS4 levels are still a blast to play through. I have had dozens of hours of fun playing through the game, doing the goals, completing challenges, and doing everything the game has to offer. But, I can't help but occasionally mourn what was lost when skating around one of the THPS4 levels. The second (semi) large flaw in my opinion is the soundtrack. It goes without saying, but Tony Hawk games are known for their amazing soundtracks. Whereas THPS1+2 brought back all but (I believe) three of the original games' songs (while adding a bunch of new ones), this game only brings back around ten with the remainder of the soundtrack being made up of different songs made by artists who were featured in the originals, new songs by other artists, a few original copyright free songs (which I assume are intended for streaming mode), and some tracks from Doom if you buy the deluxe version. Obviously, the loss of so many songs from the originals is sad on its own, but the new songs really do not stand on their own in my opinion, which further adds to the disappointment. After a while, I had widdled the songs I had turned on to less than fifteen. For a Tony Hawk game, that is terrible. After a while I just started listening to podcasts while I played. The only time I did that in THPS1+2 was once I had finished everything except for the grind to level 100. I really can't overstate how much of a letdown the soundtrack is. After THPS1+2 handled the soundtrack pretty much perfectly (despite some oddball choices with the new songs), I am really confused with the choices made for this game's. The third and most minor (but still quite noticeable) problem is the game's humor. They really softened the edges on the original games' sense of humor. Here's an example: in the original THPS3's Los Angeles level there were cops chasing a van around. Once the player causes the earthquake, the player could grind a car stuck on the highway above the level to drop the car (with the driver inside) onto the street below, which would stop the van and a shootout would occur between it and the cops. In this version, the cops are chasing a malfuctioning self-driving car and the car that the player drops onto the road below is now inhabited by a woman talking about her teacup dog (or something stupid like that). When the player grinds the car to drop it, there is a cutscene of the woman crawling out of the car before it falls (because we wouldn't want anyone to get hurt, now would we?) and the shootout is, of course, omitted. There are many small examples of this - pass by pretty much any NPC and they'll have some lame line of dialogue that does not gel with the vibe of the original games. I can't help but get the sense that whoever made all these decisions is the type to get offended by a run-of-the-mill 2000s comedy. Now onto the positive. The gameplay is absolutely sublime. Just like with THPS1+2, the developers knew exactly what mechanics to import from the later games in the series to make it flow perfectly. If you've ever enjoyed a Tony Hawk game, there's no doubt you could enjoy this one as well. Luckily, THPS3 is remade pretty much perfectly, so fans of that game have much to look forward to. The original game's content is even expanded with the addition of pro goals. I think this game handled challenges better than THPS1+2. There's noticeably less in this one, but they generally feel more purposeful. I'm also very happy that THPS1+2's leveling system was removed, since, as anyone who went for all the achievements knows, getting to level 100 was an absolute pain. Despite the cuts to THPS4, the game is still brimming with content. I'm over 40 hours in and I still have to do most skaters' solo tours to get the last achievement. Overall, this is an amazing game. It's just such a shame that THPS4 was not remade in its original form. If it was, this would have been an absolutely phenomenal game. The original THPS3 and THPS4 are both individually better than the original THPS and THPS2 in my opinion, so this game should have easily been better than THPS1+2, but due to the issues mentioned above, I do think THPS1+2 is better overall. However, if you're put off by how THPS4 was handled, I think the game still could be worth your time, because it truly is a blast. I preorded the special edition, so I got to play it three days early and I clocked over 30 hours before the game even launched. I still highly recommend the game. If they end up doing a THUG1+2, I pray neither game suffers from cut content. And I really hope they don't mess up the humor again. I don't even know if THUG2 would be possible if they were to be as prudish with the humor as they were with this one.

If you go into this game with the mindset of it just being a new installation for the franchise and not a carbon copy like I did, you're going to be very pleased. Still, I have the criticism of playing it too safe with removing the soul of THPS4 since it alienates some of the fanbase whose favorite game was THPS4. Plays just like 1+2, levels look fantastic, controls great, everything I wanted out of the original 1+2 remake remains intact. If you enjoyed THPS1+2, chances are you're going to enjoy this one.

I think this is a good to very good game if you consider it another installment of the THPS series, but falls down a bit if you are just looking for a faithful recreation of THPS4. A lot of people have aired their grievances about the changes made to the THPS4 campaign, but personally I really don’t mind. Just as THPS 1+2 is drastically different to play than going back and playing the originals, THPS 3+4 is drastically different to going back and playing the games they’re based on. The focus is much more on emulating the flow from 1+2, and it does a reasonable (if sketchy in some places) job of that. I don’t think this game is transcendent in the ways that 1+2 was, but I feel the current overall rating on steam is primarily a reaction to the cut content rather than an analysis of the game for what it is. Obviously these comparisons are unavoidable in a “remake”, but I would really urge people to go back and play THPS1 or 2 to see that this was the case for the previous remake as well. There has been an attempt to unify the gameplay and bring a more modern feel to the THPS franchise, in a way that (while not everyone’s cup of tea) has brought back a franchise that had been dormant since 2015. Play these as new games in a series you love and you’ll have a great time. If you’re looking to play THPS4 again, that game still exists! And plenty of wonderful modders have put a lot of time into giving their own take on a modern version of that game.

TL;DR: As a speedrunner, THPS veteran, and die-hard fan of the franchise for 20+ years (12 being speedrunning), this game is not nearly as bad as lot of people are saying. If you liked 1+2, you will probably like this game. But, honestly, I'd say wait for a sale. I am happy with the game; not even a year ago, we thought we'd never get this. While it doesn't excuse its misgivings at all, this is a fun game (some veterans are way over 30+ hours already, just as an indicator of how much they like the gameplay already. Casuals: I'd suggest waiting for some sort of sale (up to you based on what you're looking for). If you enjoyed 1+2, you have a good chance at enjoying this game. Veterans: It is harder to say, since we have such a very diverse community. Some would be off-put by the soundtrack, but others may approve of it being 1+2 with 3 and 4 levels. Do your own research, we have a lot of veterans giving their feedback at the moment. Gameplay If you liked how 1+2 played, you will enjoy 3+4. It plays almost the same, save for some small things here and there. I don't know what else to say tbh. Some tricks are still weird-looking, and some tricks aren't in the game. To me, it isn't the end of the world. Soundtrack Okay, this is a major pain point for some people. A lot of the original soundtrack is gone. While that is a very valid complaint, the soundtrack is not as atrocious as some people have alluded to (have you LISTENED to the Robomodo soundtracks?). I get that the music of the games are very ingrained with the identity of THPS games. We played these games at lot 20+ years ago and have fond memories. They definitely could've added more (remember, this is a game published by Activision and owned by Microsoft). Only a handful is not a good look, either way. I do agree on this point. That said: there are some misses, but a lot of the new tracks are quite good! But, music is very subjective. You may hate all of them. But, you may also find something new that you do like! I think a lot of people forget that these games helped introduce you to a new genre or a new band when you first played these 20+ years ago; this is a new way to see new music from new bands. Hell, some might even be your new favorites! If you aren't sure, they are on Spotify. Just listen to that first, I guess. Levels Waterpark, Pinball, and Movie Studio are introduced as new levels. They are fine. Just fine. Not nearly as bad some other levels, and not NEARLY the worst (again, have you SEEN Robomodo's? or even Treyarch's levels in 2x???). If Iron Galaxy continues to make games, they need a veteran to help figure it out. In the returning levels, there are some oddities here and there. Some rails don't connect, some ramps don't transfer properly (or you will hip transfer into oblivion somehow), and some of the NPCs are kinda annoying. For some levels (namely some of the THPS4 levels), they removed some of the content for various reasons. I am fine with some of it being removed, but they could've re-imagined it in other ways too. All and all, not the best. But, certainly not even close to the worst. If you really want terrible levels, go play Construction Site or Club London from 2x... THOSE are bad levels. Goals For THPS3, it is largely the same. In fact, out of all of these remakes, 3 is the closest we got to a real remake of the game. 1's remake added new goals to equal the 10 of the series going forward; 2's remake removed cash icons as a goal; and 4 is just an entirely new thing. If you really enjoyed OG THPS3, you will most likely love the remake of 3's. For THPS4, went with a 2-minute timer for all of the levels. And, honestly, they could've also used a veteran to help. A lot of collectibles are in weird locations, skitch goals in the middle of a run is stupid (not to mention skitching is very stupid in this game), and I could go on and on. I don't necessarily hate the THPS4 goals, but I don't like them either. This complaint also feeds into the "pro goals" - they aren't very good. In fact, they are annoying. And some of them are not QA'd properly at all. They get introduced to the career mode and solo tours after completing all of the goals the first time around. And, honestly, the biggest grievance is that "pro goals" ruin the ebb and flow of the game. They aren't challenging; they are just annoying, not fun, and not needed. Just get a series veteran to help next time, please (especially if it is THUG1+2). Stability I have a fairly good rig, and I can play this game 144 FPS nearly flawless. Sometimes, randomly, there are spikes. And, I have crashed a few times (always in competitions for some reason). But, after ~15 hours, I am happy with the performance of the game. Steam Deck plays decently well. It isn't always 60 FPS on lower settings, but it is still easily playable. Replayability This is where the game truly shines. THPS 3+4 - just like 1+2 - is addicting. Speerun Mode is back and very addicting. A lot of speedrunners are already in the "one more run" mentality that we had when we played through 1+2, just to show how much we like it. It also helps that the speedrun mode does NOT include "pro goals" (thank GOD). Scoring and improv is still very fun. Just like with 1+2, all of these new tricks and abilities in these remade levels allow you to truly show your own style. No two players are the same, since we all do scoring differently. And, just like 1+2, you can showcase your own way of play. And, just like for Speedrun Mode, there is a leaderboard that is addicting to get higher on. For Career/Solo Tours, it is also very fun. Again, some goals are not good, but a lot of the gameplay is still fun. The fact I can also play this on my Steam Deck and kick back and relax is an added bonus. Each skater style (Street, Vert, Vert) also gives some different options for goals (just like in the original THPS3). So, there will almost always be something different to do. Plus, there is a HUGE roster of skaters (and some secret skaters) to choose from. While THPS4 suffers from the lack of a true story mode, the 2-minute timer allows for the "I got a few minutes to play" mentality. And, of course, Free Skate and Single Session are in the game too. Conclusion I may have complained a lot, but I do it out of love for the series. I've adored this series and the games for a long time, and I am defender of some of the lesser-enjoyed games (I am a THP8 enjoyer lol). I have seen this series at its height, and I have also seen how it fell. It was a sad time to be a fan, knowing the series is dead. Do not get me wrong - there are issues (I named the biggest ones above), but I really do enjoy the game. Contrary to popular belief, you can complain a lot about a game and still love it. That is where passion for the series lies. That is where your love for something comes alive. Because, in the end, I just want the best THPS game possible. And, while this isn't close to that high bar, it still does the job well enough. And trust me when I say this - this is NOT the worst it has ever been, NOR is it the best. It is a fine game. It could've easily been a DLC pack for 1+2. I do not agree with the pricing, and I fully think this should be a "wait for a sale" if you are a casual fan; BUT, if you are a veteran and willing to look past the misgivings I've given, it is a good game. I'll end on this: if you truly believe this is a bad game or has the worst levels, go play Ride, Shred, THPS5, THPS HD, or like a few mobile games. This is NOT a terrible game. Now, go skate!
