Not every game should be big, epic, and serious. This one is short, lighthearted, and amusing. The puzzles are not too complex, the platforming sections are not demanding, and the stealthy bits are very unlikely to make you rage-quit. It works great as a family-friendly game, but us, adults, can enjoy it too. The enjoyment could be more complete, if those broken rhythm-game-boss-fights actually followed the...well, rhythm , but we've only got the two of them, so I can't complain.

The Plucky Squire is an okay game, my recommendation would be for anyone 13 years or younger to play this as it doesn't feel like its rewarding enough otherwise. Anyone with some decent gaming experience under their belt won't get enough from this game as it feels like it doesn't fully commit to what ultimately could've been a grand adventure game. The game's unique puzzles that play on the "Story Book" that you're playing the game from are cool at first but don't really have enough dimension to feel rewarding. Everything feels very surface level overall despite having some really cool "bones" to the puzzles, platforming, and gameplay. This is not to say you won't enjoy your time with it. This is something that I believe would work well with parents and younger people who are looking for an adventure game. If this game had more depth to the mechanic's they introduce I think they could've had something all ages could appreciate. I still recommend this game, but again, not for the well experienced gamer.

The Plucky Squire has to have one of the more unique game mechanics of the games I've played thus far. Take into consideration it's one of my first platformers as well, played the game 90% on the steam deck and was a relatively smooth experience, some minor freezes when transitioning from 3D to 2D and vice versa but overall no crashes at all. You can really tell the game was made with a lot of love and thought from its developers and it shows itself through the gameplay. Story-wise was fresh without much feeling of repetitiveness throughout the game. Though I played it on the lowest difficulty, it felt like the balance of the game difficulty was inconsistent. i.e. it goes pretty smoothly difficulty wise most of the game, but you experience a sudden hike of difficulty on the last chapter, I would expect it to be a similar experience for the normal and hard difficulties as well. Most of the minigames throughout the story mode was incredibly fun as well, I just wished there was an option in the gane menu to play just the minigames (or maybe it hadn't showed up even though I finished the story credits). In conclusion, an extremely fun game with a unique take on the platform genre. Quite the family friendly game content wise so would also recommend the game for kids or adults looking for a chill time, it hit right in a feels for me as an adult with a self proclaimed young heart. The transitions between the 2D and 3D world were fun, though I personally do wish to have more 3D cuts throughout the game. Gameplay completion: ~8hours, very frequent save points (autosave) so you can easily play whether or not you prefer to play in long sessions or short sessions. I played the game in multiple sessions over 2 months and had no issue returning to the game after a week or 2 i.e. you don't really forget where you're at in the story even if you stop playing it. Overall rating: Solid 8/9 , get it on a sale or even full price to support the developers' work into this project - they did not hold back in assets or story.

A zelda-esque adventure game where you sometimes swtich between 2D and 3D. The story and the world is lovingly crafted and looks amazing. A good example of how to use technology in a way that wouldn't have been possible 10 years ago. + Cute characters, story, graphics and style. + Very well done blend between 2D and 3D transitions. + Some nice puzzles. + Nice accessibility features with being able to skip minigames, get hints, etc. - The art gallery popup every time (50x) interrupts the story! There are just 2 major things "wrong" with the game. I'm still giving it a thumbs up but I think they need to be said. The puzzles with the book and words are very cool and I'd have loved to see more of it, with taking words from other sources, like a birthday card. Who is this game for? The tone and story make it look like it's for 10 year olds, but the gameplay and a lot of the references are very much for adults. The game is still fun, but the tonal dissonance threw me off at times. All that said: I had fun. And that's all that matters for a game in the end, isn't it?

The good + Transferring between 2D and 3D is an incredibly fun mechanic + Some creative puzzles involving words and turning pages + Beautiful, adorable visual style + Interesting story with a lot of meta elements + Cool mini games including rhythm stealth The mediocre ~ 3D world is a bit bland ~ In the 3D world, jumping into other books / objects was underused. What was there was enjoyable, but I expected more. As is, it was mainly used as means of simple traversal. Wish there was more of other books with different graphical styles or comic books or weird art pieces. ~ Game is really easy. Depends what you like. The bad: - Controls for tilting the book and flipping pages are annoying. I constantly had to think about what did what. Overall: Plucky Squire is a solid title. I enjoyed it for what it was and can recommend playing it just for the visual style and fun mechanics. However, it did leave me a bit disappointed. From marketing, I expected way more exploration of various stories. Maybe we will get that in a sequel?
