Transient: Extended Edition is a fascinating yet haunting experiment in blending cyberpunk futurism with Lovecraftian horror, developed by Stormling Studios and published by Iceberg Interactive. The game unfolds within the decaying walls of Providence, a domed city that shelters what remains of humanity after the world outside has fallen into ruin. You play as Randolph Carter, a hacker and member of a secretive organization who begins to uncover strange clues about forbidden technologies, parallel dimensions, and the disturbing truth behind his own reality. It’s a narrative-driven experience steeped in atmosphere, weaving together the existential dread of cosmic horror with the cold, artificial glow of a dying cybernetic civilization. Stormling Studios, known for their earlier works like Conarium and Darkness Within, brings the same eerie storytelling sensibility to Transient but with a more futuristic aesthetic, creating a world that feels both alien and uncomfortably human. From its first moments, Transient captivates through its visual and sonic world-building. The environments pulse with neon light and decay, filled with glowing machinery, corroded walls, and mysterious terminals that hum with digital whispers. Every corridor and hidden space feels like a cross between a laboratory and a mausoleum, capturing the loneliness of a civilization that has traded nature for circuitry. The visual design is stunning in its use of Unreal Engine technology, balancing the sleekness of science fiction with the grotesque influence of cosmic decay. The soundtrack further immerses the player in this atmosphere: ethereal synths, deep bass tones, and distant mechanical echoes combine to evoke a sense of technological despair. This is a world where the remnants of humanity are clinging to their digital ghosts, and the presentation makes that theme feel palpable with every step. Gameplay in Transient is structured around exploration, investigation, and puzzle-solving rather than combat or action. Players move through environments collecting data, interacting with terminals, decrypting information, and uncovering layers of mystery tied to both the digital and metaphysical realms. The protagonist’s neural interface, called the PHI system, acts as a scanner that highlights points of interest and provides a form of augmented vision that connects the tangible world to the unseen. The game frequently shifts between reality and simulation, sometimes plunging you into entirely different spaces—ancient ruins, alien landscapes, or surreal constructs that defy logic. These transitions maintain a constant tension between the known and the incomprehensible, mirroring Lovecraft’s fascination with forbidden knowledge. Interspersed throughout are mini-games that vary in style, including retro arcade-inspired sequences, code decryption puzzles, and virtual reality explorations that expand on the lore. Though mechanically simple, these sections add variety and maintain a dreamlike rhythm that keeps the experience unpredictable. Narratively, Transient thrives on ambiguity and philosophical reflection. It explores questions of consciousness, identity, and what it means to exist in a world where humanity has transcended its biological limits but lost its essence in the process. The story draws clear parallels to Lovecraft’s themes of forbidden discovery and the terror of enlightenment—only here, the cosmic horrors are refracted through the lens of technology. The blending of myth and machine gives the game a distinctive identity. At its best, it feels like an interactive fever dream: a descent into both cyberspace and madness. However, this narrative complexity comes with a cost. Some storylines feel fragmented, and the pacing occasionally stumbles, with long stretches of environmental wandering interrupted by bursts of exposition. Players looking for tightly structured storytelling may find themselves frustrated by how much is left unsaid. Yet for those who appreciate mystery and interpretation, the open-endedness reinforces the sense of disorientation that defines the game’s world. The Extended Edition improves upon the original release with enhanced visuals, smoother transitions, and an additional ending that expands on the philosophical resolution of the narrative. It refines the pacing and interface, though certain issues persist—occasional sluggish controls, unpolished animations, and a general lack of interactivity in some sequences. The brevity of the experience also remains a double-edged sword. While the story’s three-to-four-hour length ensures a focused and immersive journey, it leaves little room to fully explore the universe or deepen the character relationships hinted at throughout. Still, it manages to deliver an experience that feels complete in tone and theme, emphasizing mood and emotion over length or complexity. Despite its imperfections, Transient: Extended Edition stands out as a bold and thought-provoking piece of interactive storytelling. It captures the spirit of Lovecraft not through monsters or jump scares, but through existential unease—the fear that technology, like ancient magic, can open doors that should remain closed. The fusion of cyberpunk aesthetics and cosmic dread is rare, and Stormling Studios succeeds in crafting a world that is visually arresting, narratively intriguing, and thematically rich. It’s a brief journey, but one that lingers in the mind long after it ends. For players who enjoy atmospheric, story-driven games that prioritize mystery, introspection, and world-building over action, Transient offers a dark and beautiful descent into the digital abyss—a reminder that sometimes the greatest horror lies not in what we find, but in what we become. look, i dont want to give it a Thump up but i definitely dont want to give it a thumb down. if you like cyberpunk more than lovecraftian, you'll like this. for the love of god please triple check your gamma calibration, i had no clue that my gamma was way too dark untill half way through last chapter. it definitely needs a few tweaks, like the interaction indicator not showing up sometimes or you have to be looking exactly on the object which was annoying, some of the object just blend too much into the environment which makes you not notice it. most of the puzzles, clues and etc were moderately easy and challenging, i was borderline considering googling answers, but in saying that, the astrology map i straight up had to google it, i couldnt find the clues anywhere. it was a fun and interesting game, just make the indicators and interaction objects a little more obvious.

- Game is combination of cyberpunk style/H.P Lovecraft/little bit horror. - Story nothing mind blowing but nice to experience if you are interested H.P Lovecraft stylish stuff. - Game play is mostly walking simulator/puzzle solving because your character can`t die in this game. - Game play/story decent but nothing special but still it`s nice to play through one time. Hard to say if this better than previous game from same studio (also lovecraft stylish Conarium game) In my opinion maybe conarium better. - Maybe 6/10 on this (Conarium i give 7/10) nice game experience but nothing mind blowing or very special. (I got this goodly discounted price maybe not worth the nearly 20 euros basic price in my opinion)
