If you are looking for a pure horror experience, this is not for you. If you are looking for a puzzle riddled adventure game, filled with challenging but rewarding gameplay loops, this is not for you either. But if you are looking for a cool experience, filled with artistic expression, some horror elements, some easy puzzle elements, surreal landscapes, symbolism and that touch of Romanian/Balkan Orthodox church look and feel, telling a rather basic, but not bad story, give this a go. Bonus if you are from the Balkans and lived through the experience of visiting your Orthodox grandparents in the countryside, than you can add a massive dose of nostalgia to the mix. Worth a go in my opinion!
Grey Dawn is an amazing horror game! I absolutely love the story and the creepy, unsettling atmosphere. The sound design and dark environments make every moment feel disturbing and mysterious. It's the perfect mix of psychological horror and storytelling. Definitely worth playing!
I'm a big psychological horror kitty when it comes to games and books. I've also spent the past year learning about different religions and understanding the Bible and its messages for fun, so my review comes from that perspective! Gray Dawn is a short game, which can be a pro or a con depending on what you're looking for. For me, I wanted a short weekend game I could finish. I really liked the 1920s setting—I've always been drawn to the early 1900s as a spooky era, and since I've been listening to 1920s music lately, it felt like this game was meant for me! I also loved how the game referenced the lambs and caught on quickly to what they represented. Abraham the priest is struggling with his faith and feelings of divine abandonment while battling his guilt and inner demons. Yet, he is still trying to hold true to his faith, searching for any glimpse of hope, and determined to prove his faithfulness to God and receive His grace. That struggle comes across clearly in his journey. I found the storyline engaging and honestly enjoyed it. Was this "horror"? No, not at all. Was it spooky or scary? No. But it really gets you thinking about the deeper meaning behind the messages Abraham and David send to set the narrative. On the downside: the puzzles were way too easy, and the graphics gave my kitten eyeballs a bit of a headache with how old-school they felt. The controls were simple, but the camera sensitivity was awful. I wanted to play on a controller, but it felt clunky, so I was forced to use mouse and keyboard. At times, it made selecting things or solving puzzles tricky because the slightest movement sent you flying in a different direction—though oddly enough, you get used to it. I rate this game 3.5/5. If it's on sale, buy it—it's worth at least one playthrough!
