Trench Lord is a clever 2D shooter in the vein of Running with Rifles or a single-player Foxhole, but set explicitly in the Eastern Front of World War 2, featuring the Soviet Union and Wehrmacht forces (albeit rendered in cute, polygonal format). The primary appeal of this game, though, is that it mixes large-scale, 2D shooter mayhem (very much like battles in Running with Rifles) with squad-based tactical combat and maneuvering (complete with weapons teams, vehicle crews, and a suppression mechanic), as well as a management overlayer in which you decide which weapons and troops to procure/replace in campaign. There are three pre-set campaigns: one prologue/tutorial campaign set in the pre-war conflict between the Soviets and Japan, and one campaign each for the Soviets and Wehrmacht set during the war itself. In addition, there are randomly generated campaigns and scenarios that allow for more variety once those are done (though I am finding the campaigns themselves to be highly replayable just due to the variety of ways one can build and deploy forces to tackle most challenges). Throughout each campaign, you build up squads and vehicle crews to efficiently use armaments that you can spend your prestige to acquire from your own nation's stockpiles, or receive battlefield salvage of enemy weapons/vehicles. This allows you to approach different challenges in different ways, as, in addition to different weapon loadouts, squads can be outfitted with specialized equipment for special purposes (e.g., grenades, binoculars, etc.), and even the type of squad influences how it performs. For example, designated rifleman squads allow for more men to be deployed on the field, and could even all be outfitted with submachine guns or machine guns (if you can afford it), but they will not have the speed and suppression resistance of a dedicated assault squad or the cover bonus and accuracy of a dedicated machine gun squad. However, it is definitely possible (and fun) to mix and match different squad loadouts to find the optimal equipment, weapon, and squad type combinations for different missions. That is to say nothing of the options for off-map artillery support, vehicles, and other modifiers one can acquire through the campaign and use in battle if desired. Suffice it to say that there is a lot more complexity and gameplay going on than gameplay screenshots would (or even possibly could) suggest, and that this is not just a 2-D shooter. Instead, for those that wish to engage with it, there is a layered yet approachable action, tactical, and strategic management experience to be had with this game that is almost more like a real-time, shooter-oriented version of a tactics game a la Valkyria Chronicles or even Fire Emblem than a pure shooter. It is certainly trying something very ambitious, and in large part succeeds. Certainly not everything is perfect: the AI sometimes behaves oddly when assigned tasks and moves in unanticipated, indirect paths (this is particularly true for friendly vehicles), and your squads' AI seems less competent at finding cover than enemy AI, or even friendly AI not under the player's direct control, often leading to embarassingly quick elimination of squads without careful attention. But, this game is already impressive, and is still (as of this review) getting regular performance updates, meaning it is only likely to improve from here. If you buy this game you will likely get your money's worth and more, and the Developer certainly deserves support.

Very fun game. Would be a masterpiece with Workshop support; and, not just maps either. Allowing modders to create new units, vehicles, weapons, factions, campaigns, ballistics, etc would make this a timeless classic. Edit: Nerf mortars. Completely broken against tanks. Need bigger artillery added to counter tanks.

It's not too serious but it's also not too arcady. I like this middle ground. Eastern front and China theater are also nice bonuses that you don't usually get to play in other WW2 games For a small indie game it has got surprisingly good depth and some historical accuracy. Definitely needs official controller support tho. It should be totally doable for a top-down shooter.

Your Motherland Needs You! This game is set on the brutal battlefields of the Eastern Front in World War II. You play as a commander in those classic battles, leading your troops to defeat the enemy in a top-down view. Two Modes There are two modes in the game - Campaign and Battlefield. The campaign mode is more competitive. You have to unlock the maps one by one. In this mode, your resources are limited, so you need to pay more attention to win the war, which will put your command abilities to a very severe test. And in the battlefield mode, you can experience some classic battles directly. But not like the campaign mode, there are some roguelite features in the battlefield, very fun, really, it gives me a fresh feeling. I can't say much about the game's background compared to military enthusiasts, but as someone who plays games for fun, I think this game is fun enough and won't bore you. What I appreciate The art style is simple yet charming. Compared to those realistic styles, it completely gives me the feeling of war without directly confronting its brutality. This art style makes the game look more casual. And the soundtrack does provide a good atmosphere. By the way, it even has a climate system in the game! This game is also very easy to pick up and play, don't need to spend too much time learning. Furthermore, the gameplay isn't complicated, because it's been almost 20 years since I last played a World War II game, but I still quickly got into it. If you're like me and have rarely played similar games, then you should give it a try. I think it's pretty good.

Very fun. a more immersive Running with Rifles in my opinion, as you have regenerative health out of combat, your also able to slide and roll. This game has 3 different game modes but 90% of my playtime is just in one mode, battlefield mode. this mode has RPG like elements and your able to attempt a "no death" run which is my personal favorite. the stages you play on have historical significance and the game provides a brief description as to why, the game also tracks your stats for each completed stage so you can attempt a better run. the controls for controller are a pain at the start but this game is worth the time it took me to re-map the controls, i also community shared my layout for everyone. theres only two "cons" in this game i have so far besides the controller support: if your under heavy fire and pause the game often times one gun sound sticks until you unpause the game, the second thing is sometimes the game boots take a little long or i have to re-select the game through a window tab to get it to start(i play in big picture mode)
