German provincial charm, absurd humour and blessedly little inventory torture I am not normally much of a point-and-click enthusiast. My tolerance for carrying seventeen apparently useless objects through half a game in the hope that a rubber duck, a teaspoon and the mayor's left sock will eventually combine into a functioning telephone is limited. Trüberbrook, however, gets an impressive amount right. Its excellent handcrafted 2.5D visuals and animations are genuinely distinctive, the English voice acting is very good, and rural West Germany in the late 1960s turns out to be a surprisingly effective setting for a science-fiction mystery. It is quaint, peculiar and just slightly suspicious, rather like discovering that your grandmother's holiday village has been quietly infiltrated by theoretical physics. The interaction system deserves particular praise because it largely eliminates the traditional adventure-game ceremony of trying every inventory item on every available object until either something happens or civilisation collapses. For me, this was one of the main reasons to keep playing. The story moves forward instead of sending you from Pontius to Pilate because that one bloody thing you need is lying 25 screens away behind a shrub you inspected three hours ago. The humour also works remarkably well. Its absurd situations repeatedly reminded me of The Secret of Monkey Island, while several plot twists arrive from absolutely nowhere, wave politely, hit you over the head with a haddock and continue as though this were perfectly normal behaviour. There are imperfections. A few typos in the English subtitles suggest that somebody in final quality assurance may have looked at the clock and decided that spelling was fundamentally a bourgeois concept. Fast travel is stranger still: it exists, but you have to ask for it at the correct place in the game. If the thought never occurs to you, the feature apparently decides that you are unworthy of modern transportation and simply remains absent. Even after unlocking it, it does not work everywhere. I found that rather unfair, particularly in a game whose greatest achievement is otherwise preventing unnecessary hiking. Music is mostly irrelevant to me because I turn it down anyway, but one later band performance cannot be shortened or skipped. You simply sit there for several minutes while the game briefly transforms into Waiting for Godot: The Musical . Trüberbrook does not quite reach the scale or polish of the major triple-A productions, but in the tier immediately below it is very much at home. It looks excellent, sounds excellent, has an unusual setting, keeps its puzzles moving, and possesses exactly the sort of cheerful absurdity that can make a German provincial mystery involving science fiction feel perfectly reasonable. A solidly positive recommendation, especially for people who like point-and-click adventures but could happily live without their more sadistic traditions. One final instruction: watch the credits. And wait. Trüberbrook has saved one last plot twist for the end, presumably because allowing the player to leave normally would have been far too conventional.

Truberbrook a quirky and murky, yet interesting 1960's sci-fi post ww2 Germanic story. like a movie you control. In English the title would be "Gloomy Brook/ Murky Stream". You don't need to speak German to understand it, the translations for the game its all very good as the main character is an American. Aesthetically it is quite interesting, haven't seen a game like it prior, Looked great! The story had quite a bit of symbolism from a German perspective, especially if you understand the history of the nation. Some puzzles you might need to get a walkthrough even though you know the answer, as things might not be placed exactly where you might expect. But I would say the puzzles are satisfyingly weird, and strangely intuitive. Overall would recommend if you're looking for an odd yet unique 1960's sci-fi Germanic story and have roughly ~7 hours to complete the 5 chapters.

Just Get It and Play Trüberbrook is one of those games where I don't really feel the need to overthink the review. I played it, I enjoyed the experience, and that's really all I can say. It's a charming little adventure that I had a genuinely good time with, and sometimes that's enough. Just get it and play it. I think you'll enjoy the experience.

I am very happy, that I actually liked the game, because I like supporting German Devs and Publishers. The Game has a very endearing art style and overall good German voice acting. The puzzles in the game are mostly good and logical, but there are a view, where it was a little tedious to solve them. Overall I would say, the game was a bit on the easy side (especially, if you have a LucasArts-absurdity-trained Aadventure brain), but in the end the whole experience was a pleasant ride. I liked the simplified inventory management system and the interaction system. I did not have any technical difficulties, crashes or other oddities.
