March 2025
Right off the bat, Two Worlds is pretty jank. It's got corny writing, corny voice acting, and this particular version of the game has some issues with performance for some reason. However, pushing that aside, there is a charming game, with a lot of big ideas with some that unfortunately just aren't implemented well. The combat is an interesting back and forth. You run in, swing a few times, and back out. Almost every single enemy has a few different attacks with obvious tells that you can then dodge immediately with an invincible backdash. That backdash can be cancelled into from ANYTHING. So even though your attacks lock you into a swinging animation, you can still fluidly move around an encounter and skilfully take on enemies. However, most of this goes out the window when you are surrounded by multiple enemies, which you will encounter many times, especially with wolf, orc, and bandit packs that consist of 5+ enemies at times, and you'll be running in circles, waiting for an opening to attack once, back out and try not to die And you will die, because even basic enemies deal absurd amounts of damage. Outside that, every hit feels chunky and good, and each weapon has its own combo string that looks visually cool, and have different properties that are good for different situations. However death isn't a big deal since you'll respawn shortly after at a nearby checkpoint, and you can simply run back and try again. This lessens the impact of death, and eases the frustration of the unfortunately overtuned enemies. There are many interesting RPG elements, however the main character is billed as a certain archetype and starts with a handful of skills which you are encouraged to follow. Other skills can be trained for a cost at various NPCs in different cities. They are unforunately hard to find though, and the cost is quite high at low levels. On level up, you can also dump points into HP, Dexterity, Strength, and Willpower. All of them are quite important for you build, but HP and Dex are the ones that you'll find you may need the most for melee early, due to the high damage, and dex helping you keep up your damage and defense values. Dex unfortunately is required because every level up ticks down those damage and defense values. Quests are generally simple, requiring you to either kill monsters, talk to people or go into dungeons to collect items. Nothing special, but they all are voice acted which is nice. The world itself is vast, but mostly sparse, but the weather effects and different environments are varied enough it sets the tone well enough. Items are generally pretty simple, upping damage and defense values, and you'll occasionally find something with a bunch of stat increases on it which is cool. What I found most interesting is you can mash items together to upgrade them and merge stats. Helps decrease clutter, and you're never upset to find a duplicate. The music is pretty good. No real notes, but it sets the tone very well. Finally, the main quest is quite short if you beeline it, but it's worth it to maybe take your time. I enjoyed my time with this game, and while it's not a perfect game, or even a good game, it's certainly not a bad game, and I don't regret playing. Its sincerity is refreshing, and for that I think it elevates itself above many RPGS of the time

I remember when this game was hyped up as the "Oblivion killer." Lol. In retrospect we can all see the major flaws in Oblivion itself as it has become a bit of a meme itself but believe me when I say this game is a whole other level of missing features, jank, crude and under-developed. Even downright broken at times! But, is it enjoyable? Well, surprisingly yes-- but with some caveats. If you're looking for a innovative game with a good story, narrative and immersion... Two Worlds is DEFINITELY NOT for you. However, if you're looking for a straight up videogame with camp gallore which is often unintentionally hilarious and enjoy grindy leveling in a ARPG with an open world to waste some hours whilst enjoying a interesting soundtrack? Sure! The voice acting is absolutely terrible and needs a special mention in and of itself. You'd swear the game was written as a comedy. It's actually kind of amazing how bad some of this is even for the time, I laughed out loud so many times at how awkward dialogue can be. The expressions on the hero's face during dialogue choices only adds to this experience. The Steam version of this has been my second playthrough, I tried retail back in the day and rushed through it quite a bit, missing tons of content-- pretty much half the game. I came back to it figuring I'd give it a fair shake and was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed leveling up and made some personal little goals to tick before finishing the game: To get to level 100 if possible, fully explore as many locations as I could locate, and to clear at least roughly 80% or so of the mobs since they do not seem to respawn. I managed all of these and it was actually a pretty fun experience this way. If you want a basic ARPG and enjoy hack and slash grind, definitely grab this one on sale. It'll keep you entertained for a while if you really go through the content.

This game is a nostalgia fest! I grew up playing it as a kid, thinking it was the hardest game ever. But back then, I never read up on stats or even touched alchemy, lol. The voice acting is so terrible it's good. The game is old and def some fixes you have to do on your end to get it working but it was worth it cause this was my skyrim back in the day and I am still having fun playing it again years later in 2025. Truly a game for the ages.

It's a hesitant recommend. I'm a sucker for this type of game, so just wandering around exploring and getting loot was fun. But, really... it's not great - it's just a wish.com Oblivion. Pros: * Some very cool areas to find, in a large map to explore. * Equipment can be stacked - if you find the same type of weapon or armor, you can merge it with your existing piece to create an enhanced item. This was great, and probably the best feature of the game - it meant that late game finding the same old junk still had value as you could boost your gear further. * Some of the music is excellent. Now and then there is a dud tune, but overall good stuff. Cons: * Combat is simplistic and not very fun. * None of the loot was unique, it's seemingly ALL randomly generated. Even areas where it felt like you found a unique, special chest, it's just filled with the same old junk. * There seems to be a bug with the ending, the cutscene did not play, it just skipped straight to the main menu screen.
