Still the best fishing game I have tried. VR support works even in Linux. I have about 50h in the original app before the transition. Also can hang out and chat with others while fishing; typically there's a few people online in the Betty map. Can pair with Xbox controller via wifi dongle. People who know how to fish IRL will pick this up easily and those who don't will learn much. It's a game, if it's not working, waiting won't help. Change rig, location, and time to get consistent results. Even has boat driving mechanics and the big game saltwater maps! Best of all, built-in Internet Radio if you want to listen to music. Can be run in a window while you're browsing the web. It's not perfect for fishing sticklers, but it's the best on the market and the devs care.
Ultimate Fishing Simulator® is a Fishing game co-developed by Pancake Games and Bit Golem. There are three modes to play: Normal, Realistic and Sandbox. In Normal you get access to an underwater camera, bait indicator and hunter vision. In Realism mode those features are disabled and catch rates are reduced. In Sandbox mode you have access to every equipment, fishery and all skills are unlocked. You play in First Person and can choose to play in singleplayer or multiplayer. You can choose different fishing styles or techniques such as float, spinning, bottom, ice or fly fishing. Choose a hook size, then adjust the bait or lure type. Pay attention to the weather condition and luring method. You can use Straight Slow, Straight, Lift & Drop, Stop & Go or Twitching luring methods. As part of the Aquariums DLC you can see your biggest catches in your trophy room and can set up aquariums with the fish you want to display up to 30 fish and 2000kg max in one tank. If you choose you wish to keep them that's where they'll be located and available to be accessed later. If you want to sell them then you do so from the aquarium options. To start off; the map designs are very nice, there are Winter Ice-Fishing variants of several maps. The maps are based on real world locations. The game artwork looks polished. The game mechanics don't feel shallow but aren't frustrating either. It feels good to fight with the fish. You adjust reel speed and drag while managing your line. The animations feel nice and I like seeing how the different lures move. Fish models look nice. Difficulty directly correlates with how good of a set-up you have. Different fish prefer dfferent styles or rigs. You have to adjust how you play to what you want to catch. Sound effects are appropriate. Music is good, there is an in-game online radio feature. UFS is a relaxing and nice way to spend the time. Has a high replayability. Reeling and even waiting feels enjoyable. A good way to unwind when you're not able to fish in real life. Fish behaviour seems realistic, although some glitches do appear occassionally. Really nice to include a fish encyclopedia which includes information about the species, best weather conditions, what they eat and how many specimens you've caught as well as your biggest. There seems a decent amount of realism even down to the fish diet. The game has a day and night cycle. You can set this yourself, for your personal enjoyment. Depends on whichever time is best for you to fish. Game allows for use of a boat and trolling though not every map has this feature. You can switch easily between different rods for fast access, up to 5 different rigs. The help guide is useful for explaining all the features in more detail. It tells you if you should consider switching to a bigger or smaller hook for the area. Every month the leaderboards for each location are reset. You can set up your own tournaments which can have a time limit, goal can be amount of fish, total weight or biggest fish. They can be public or private. Game runs okay but can be a bit slow depending on your graphics settings. For a few cons to mention; there is no way to choose your avatar. Certain maps have a different first person view model but it doesn't let you choose a model. In multiplayer you appear as a faceless 3d avatar. The colour changes depending on what action you're taking. Some multiplayer features are limited. It would be nice to get more interactive features for example emoticons, a better third person view model, in-game voice chat. As well as visiting each other's trophy rooms / aquariums for those that have the DLC or viewing leaderboards for friends only. The aquariums would benefit with a mode where you can select a fish and see the aquarium from their perspective or free cam for improved viewing pleasure. The biggest problem is some of the UI might seem cluttered. It would be much nicer to be able to see which fish use which bait or lure in an alphabetical order - or even to search by fish so you can just see what you want to buy. It can take a long time to look over which fish prefers which setup, which can feel tedious. Some of the third-party radio stations have long since gone offline and don't function. These should be updated and removed from the game. Some movement feels a bit restrictive i.e. not being able to jump or interact with some items around the map like sitting on chairs, interacting with doors. Fish might not always spawn where you might assume so hunter vision is important. Sometimes line gets glitched. I had a glitch where my line was vibrating very fast when I reeled it out past a certain depth. Sometimes there are underwater camera clipping issues. Overall, I believe any fishing enthusiast would be keen to play this game even if it's a bit dated. I'm excited to see the release of the 3rd instalment and the free remaster once development is finalised. The game is good value for money, and the DLCs can add to the experience. They provide more fish to catch, different equipment, locations and even the addition of VR. This game is best enjoyed in a voice chat with friends. Usually we screen share and show off our own catches. 8/10
