Alright so reading these reviews made me really depressed as it feels like no one actually played the game. Given the fact that I am fairly sure I am the only one who actually managed to finish the game including all the quests, I thought it might be fair to compile my thoughts to those still on the fence whether to buy the game. I will not comment on the overall gameplay and the genre of the game as that is sort of covered among the other commenters. First of all, the game is strictly *timed*. You have 20 in-game days to finish all the locations on the map, by then you have to move immediately for the final battle or it's fade to black and straight to main menu defeat scenario. You should prioritize speed - you will NOT stat cap your characters or anything of the sorts, there is simply no time, so do not hoard gear or save good pieces "for later". This will give you around 25-35 hours of realistic game length, with very little possibility to extend it. I would say this should be your first deciding factor whether you are okay with it - I wish I knew. Apart from that, if you are a fan of Jagged Alliance 2, you will be right at home. All those comments about atrocious UI and unexplained mechanics are mind boggling to me, or straight out completely false. Yes, the quality of life features are not there completely, but everything is cleanly explained and very straightforward. I never felt for a second lost or at wit's end. Contrary to some of the comments, there are no bugged quests and the entire game can be played from start to finish without a single hurdle. Game is a solid 7/10 overall, but an absolute must play for any JA2 fan or anyone who loves progression systems that follow "the more you do it, the better you become at it". The dev clearly understood the assignment and as a result wears the inspiration on his sleeve.

This is a fun little indie game that's punching above it's weight in a Jagged Alliance 2 meets Dead State kind of way. So if you like the idea of JA2 in a zombie apocalypse with some base building, this might be for you. Because it's developed by indies, what you'll find is a somewhat unpolished gem that does need QOL improvements (UI, inventory, tooltips, better quests, etc). No bugs I've encountered, but definitely needs QOLs. The combat isn't as deep as JA2 (sneaking could be better as it's a little obtuse and took me awhile to understand the proper mechanics of stealth kills), but it has ballistics (bullets can penetrate wood cover for example) and a good variety of firearms and weapons. There's a variety of combat and quests, but unfortunately not the most varied as it usually just boils down to kill that group missions without complex outcomes like stealth or diplomacy. Some replay value as there's 3 factions with antithetical philosophies that you will eventually have to join. So this is a fun, good little game. It's not great, but you can't expect that from an indie developer. I hope it gets the kind of proper recognition so it doesn't end up like DS.

30 hours into the game as of the writing of this review. Game still in EA (Dev notes state that all content has been included except the end scenario/Horde attack. Technically I've not encountered any problems. The game ran smoothly on my mid-range PC and there were no bugs to speak of - technical or scenario-wise - in the content I've played. Based on the map layout and the faction sheets, I estimate that I played around 2/5th of the game while exploring each "level" carefully and trying to find every clue, so maybe 70 hours total play-time for my game style. The feel of the game is a mix of Jagged Alliance and Dead State. JA for combat and tactical map exploration and Dead State for ressource collection, base management and strategic map exploration. And atmosphere. US is very similar to Dead State in the overall ambiance of the game, which is a good thing in my book. As of this review's writing, I would say the game is good. I got it on sale at -20% and I am happy with my purchase. There remains a number of unpolished details that could carry the game forward to very good but IMO they are mainly concerned with the scenario and I don't know if the Devs will have the ressources or the will (after all this is only my point of view) to modify them. This includes a lack of banter - present in the beginning of the game but diminishing as the scenarios go on, a formulaic approach to each map (the scenario structure is identical even if the details of the quests change) and a general feel that the atmosphere takes a back seat to the mechanical aspect of the game as time goes by. These are relatively minor points though, and the game remains very pleasant, even in its actual EA state.

Game takes a lot of learning. Even "narrative mode" is pretty brutal at first. Expect to fail early, but once you figure the game out it starts to make sense. I did end up creating quite a powerful team. Been having fun, but it does have a very steep learning curve and the game itself does a very poor job of teaching you how to play.

Shaping up to be a fantastic RPG. If you enjoyed Dead State, this is an easy buy for you. This will also appeal to people who enjoyed Fallout 1&2, Jagged Alliance 2, Atom RPG, etc. I've enjoyed the early access version so far. At the time of writing this it's still a good bit away from being complete, but it's very promising and currently what is there is fun and feels fresh. There's still content and story to add and a lot of balance and tweaks to do after that, no doubt. Currently has developing base building and management, recruitment, factions, multiple choices for being friendly or not, etc. Combat can be approached in multiple ways with various tools to do so. Encounters being brute forced can often end very badly or have massive struggles while being clever in your planning can make life a lot easier (such as trying to storm the front of an enemy holed up in a building vs sneaking around the back, trying to take out watchmen and people around the place first and so on). Some nice investigation elements. All the bones for something very good are there and it just needs the devs to keep on going with what they're doing and listen to feedback. Enemies also feel reasonably smart and behaving appropriately, although I think the humans could maybe be tweaked up to punish player mistakes even more. Snipers from above though will take out half your guys, either left bleeding out or knocked out from impact on their helmets. Story is fun and interesting, some nice surprises in there. Factions aren't boring and have their own in-fighting and gossip to explore. Hopefully I'll remember to update this after it leaves early access and feels finished to me.
