SRW Y is not a perfect game but it's definitely a step in the right direction. SRW Y has made a lot of quality of life changes compared to previous games with the best change being that the game is actually somewhat challenging compared to the other SRW games on steam which are really easy even on the hardest difficulties. Y's difficulty spike at the beginning of chapter 2 is also something to be careful of as if you aren't, great mazinger WILL get shot down by the silly 70s space squids. The increased difficulty also means that terrain actually matters now and positioning could mean life or death. Getter Kahn (3) is also really strong and reliable especially in the early game, I'd even say that it's the strongest getter 3 in the series history. The game also refines the "choose your own adventure" aspect from 30 by reducing the amount of bloat/filler missions. This was definitely a step in the right direction as it also allows the story to be more streamlined and the crossover elements probably became easier to write and program as the writers don't need to account for 10 different missions that may or may not have happened. There's even a submenu that shows what mission leads into another mission which is great for those who would rather complete one mission chain at a time. Speaking of story, SRW Y's story is quite good and cohesive. Even though the roster seems quite tame and boring with more than 5 different Gundam series and only 4 debuts, almost all of the included series are represented quite well and most of the usual "Post-Plot" shows that are often treated as filler actually have some plot relevance and get their time to shine simply because a major antagonist is brought back. Combattler in particular goes from being a glorified cameo in 30 to having a role in the super robot storyline. Dunbine also gets a significantly larger role in Y compared to X and T and there's a lot of crossover elements with L-Gaim and Zeta Gundam. Speaking of Zeta, we finally get the return of a few characters from the show that aren't Kamille, Fa, or Yazan which is nice. IMO the biggest flaw of this game is the inconsistent animation quality/style but that has been an issue ever since the series moved to HD (Z3). By inconsistent animation quality/style, I'm mainly talking about how some units have beautiful and expressive attacks while others reuse subpar animations that are over 10 years old. The units from Endless Waltz are probably the biggest victims of this subpar animation reuse as they are stuck with animations that were considered ♥♥♥♥ for their time. The only well animated units from that series are Wing Zero which got reanimated for Y and Sandrock which was reanimated in X. A lot of the new animations in Y also use sprites based on 3d models so the art style for the sprites become even less consistent. While I'm fond of the full 2d sprites, I personally think that 3d based sprites should become the norm for the sake of consistency and 3d based sprites would allow the animations to be more fluid and dynamic as they wouldn't need to completely redraw a body part at a different angle. DD (the mobile game) also uses 3d based sprites and while less polished, the new animations are generally more dynamic and fluid than their mainline counterparts. Now even though Attack Animations are a huge part of the game and their inconsistency has been a problem ever since going HD in Z3, I don't think that's enough of a reason to not play the game. I'm personally annoyed with a lot of the decisions made regarding the animations but as someone who has dabbled in both animation and making games, I can understand why they made certain decisions. I'm pretty sure the main reason why there's so much asset reuse in Y is because they moved from an inhouse engine to Unity so a lot of the development time probably went into remaking everything. Animation is also hard and time consuming so I'm not surprised if the animators didn't want to make new attacks for unit most might not even use. I don't want to make excuses for a game published by a large company but I'd rather have more SRW games that COULD be even better than let the series die because out of touch bigwigs (especially at bandai namco) don't care about WHY a product might not be doing well. If you like mecha and any of the shows included in SRW Y or you like VNs and turn based RPGs, you'd probably still enjoy the game and despite the length of my rant, I still think the positives vastly outweigh the negatives.

For context, I have completed one run on Expert difficulty, which was almost 50 hours of gameplay, and completed every optional, side, and DLC mission currently available in the game. I have every achievement except the one for getting all achievements and doing an alternate character run. I am comparing this to other games in the Super Robot Wars series I have played, namely X, V, and 30 on Steam. I have 100%ed all of those games on the hardest difficulty through two runs. I played on patch 1.10. For the good, this game has a true difficulty now, where even late in the campaign, your units can get one-shot by some of the special bosses. It was a nice change, as in some of the other SRW games I have played, even on Expert difficulty, once you got going past the early game and cranked your main units, you could use those to solo most missions and snowball from there. I am truly glad I pre-ordered, as the GranVang and VangEx both replace other units that are not good in combat but have repair capabilities. They are both very powerful in their own right, however, so I found myself bringing them to every mission after I picked them up. If you did not pre-order, it will make the game much more of a slog if you play on Expert. The other unit I must mention is the Xelguard, which has Dogma it can use on itself and other mechs. It is incredibly powerful when used to strengthen your own forces and weaken enemy forces simultaneously. Again, this is another mech I brought in every mission after I got it. Totally worth picking up the DLC 1+2 set just for this mech. I liked the story in this game; it is on par with V for cohesiveness and believability. It did not once feel bloated like 30 did at times, with how many missions/options kept popping up all the time. I also liked how the early side missions can give you early access to many of the mechs you would get later, which was helpful in an Expert run, as you needed some of them to progress early. The STG System buffing was a nice touch, and I liked how you could prioritize what you wanted to work on. Finally, the Assist system was also nice; when used properly, it can allow for some interesting combinations with both active and passive buffs. I found the ones giving you MXP and credits to be the most useful on Expert, but your mileage may vary. I must also praise the main character designs, which were very well done. For the not-so-good, I had one crash within the 50 hours, or so I played. Thanks to the autosave feature, I did not lose much progress. The series is very Gundam-heavy once again. This is not a problem for me, but check the other series included if you like any of them before you buy Super Robot Y. I found the DLC 1 mechs to be underwhelming and, unlike the bonus/pre-order mechs, I did not use them at all unless they were mandatory in missions. I hope DLC 2 has better mechs and more fully featured animations. Speaking of animations, some of the mechs in the game have not had their animations updated or improved for over 10+ years now. I expect more for the 150+ CAD I paid when I pre-ordered. Again, I hope DLC 2 does better in this area. I would have liked to see units from Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury Season 2, curious it was not added since season 1 was. I do not like how all the work I put into levelling up the Assist team members does not carry over if you have enough MXP. It was such a pain to level up some of them. I would like to see this added as a feature. I would also like to see the ability to get more part slots in New Game+ for all our mechs, as most are limited to only 2. Why bother doing all the side missions for extra parts if you can only get two slots for most mechs, and only three if they have the proper full custom bonus for it? I would like to see that added to either the STG System or to something you can purchase with your MXP when you go to New Game+. This was one of the best New Game+ features in 30 and I would like to see it return. Overall, I give Super Robot Y an 8.5/10. Most issues seem to have been patched. Some animations could be improved, and unit customization could be deeper, but it is a great game worth getting if you're into the genre. The story is well written, so you do not necessarily need deep lore knowledge, and it is accessible to the uninitiated. Well worth picking up if you like turn-based strategy games. I look forward to another run through it after DLC 2 comes out.

Easily the best modern mainline English-localized SRW of the last five entries (V, X, T, 30, Y). Most interconnected in story the game's franchises have been in any English-translated game since W. Content dense without being content bloated (we're looking at you 30. Harder difficulties that are actually fun. While I'll always be sad about not getting any new OG games, I'm afraid the fresh new blood of SRW devs actually cooked with this one. It's an incredible entry from the new lead/team.

Note that almost all the negative reviews are complaining about resolution or hyperanalyzing the shape of the healthbars like an anime edition of American Psycho, and the positive reviews are talking about the gameplay and writing. Ask yourself which of those things matters more to you in a game that is half a visual novel, half robot fire emblem and 100% 2D. The game is an a massive step up from 30 in all the ways that matter. The crossover setting is cohesive again, consequently the character writing is much improved, returning to the sort of cross-series interactions that were the hallmark of the series prior to 30 instead of the hollow, talking-past each other style present in that game, the numerous changes to the core gameplay systems are all for the better, the high difficulty settings are actually good for the first time in a decade (At least if you don't rush to make a review after playing solely the tutorial chapter), the nonlinear mission system is much improved both in terms of presentation thanks to the flow chart view and actual gameplay thanks to tighter mission structure willing to introduce some structure and linearity into the free-forr-all, VN presentation has significantly improved primarily through greater use of CGs (There were more CGs in the demo than all of 30), but also increased use of visual effects and sound cues. If you are here for a game, SRW Y is the best game the series has released in a long time. If you are here to count pixels, I don't know, I've been to busy playing the game to break out the loupe and calipers to figure out if Suletta's forehead contains an acceptable number of photocells.

Pretty good so far, it seems to be locked to 1080 or below by default, but it's not too bad not something to thumbs down the entire game over, weirdly enough as a Unity game usually you'd be able to mess with Launch Settings in steam for custom Resolution but that seems to not work as on startup it re-defaults to the settings in the game EDIT: Fix has been found for this 1. Go to Super Robot Wars Y's Exe and select properties 2. go to compatability and select "Change High DPI Settings" 3. enable "high DPI Scaling Override" 4. in the drop down menu select "System" 5. Apply 6. Go to Steam Launch Options in Properties for SRW Y 7. in the text box input -screen-width <width> -screen-height <height> 9. replace <width> and <height> with desired resolution 10. You can now play the game at any resolution For the love of god, never touch Window or Resolution settings in the PC Settings menu for all that is holy So far pretty good, with the engine change comes a lot of improvements such as the battles not locking to 30 FPS when you start, meaning it looks pretty smooth, the game's Frame rate is also no longer capped at 60 at all There's been a host of gameplay changes made to finally give some spice to SRW that's been lacking for years and the difficulty options are very nice for those who'd like to challenge themselves a bit with Expert, a lot more thoughtfully designed compared to 30 Custom Music implementation is a little rough, now the folder is in Appdata for some reason under Locallow/Bandai Entertainment/SRYMUSIC and the option to replace tracks in a batch is no longer available which is a shame for cutscenes and such, but it does come with the game auto-sorting your custom music in albums if the data is there for it, it's a small thing but nice. Animations overall are a lot more consistent than 30's, some look fine, others look great, but there isn't anything that looks really bad thus far which is a great sign, sprite work can vary a little, some of the new pre-rendered sprites look decent, while others look a tad scuffed, but overall they animate well for the most part and that's what matters The story so far is fairly well interconnected compared to previous games and it really feels like the devs are putting their best foot forward with an increase in CGs during cutscenes making way for some great dynamic shots. Of course this is all just first impressions but based on them I'd definitely recommend it
