Vestaria Saga 1 is an amazing SRPG that follows Kaga's standards. It took me 50 hours to finish my first playthough on CLEMENCY difficulty (I am not confident enough to try on ORTHODOX and, honestly, I do not feel any encouragement to do so). The game has 20 chapters (no secret or gaiden chapters) but each chapter is very long, very simmilarly to FE4 and FE5. Most of them are pretty big too so expect to use cavalry and fliers to do errands for you. No "rescue" command in this game either, so you cannot use cheese tactics. As a Kaga game, you should expect: * Low unit starting attributes and very low growth rates. * Low attribute caps, meaning that even an RNG-screwed unit will likely cap some of the stats (assuming a lvl 20 base promotion). * Meta-knowledge is borderline required to beat the more difficult stages, unless you are planning to restart each stage after you have found all the gimmicks and know what to do. * The game expects you to rely on powerful weapons and game knowlege to beat the stages, rather than having a powerful character via lucky level ups. The pros: * Incredible story that kept me glued on the chair relentlessly playing and replaying every stage just to see how things would unfold. This is very unlikely of these kind of games to have such a good plot but this game does not fail to deliver it. * The characters are ALIVE! They are not just "fodder" while the main character gets all the attention. Offscreen, a lot of your party members interact with each other and many of them have significance over the course of the story. Every single character was likeable. * By keeping the numbers low and featuring powerful equipment, every single unit can be useful at the right time without relying on RNG. Also, calculations are easier done with small numbers rather than big ones. * Lots of powerful equipment and skills that allows you to be very creative. Many units have personal weapons too and you have a semi-limited way of "repairing" them. The cons: * The empty-trading bug. If you try to trade an item from a character to another without getting any items in return, the game will crash. Luckly, the community has found a way to easily fix this once and for all. It is described on a pinned post in the discussion thread. I did it myself and this bug ceased to be a problem. * The difficulty is VERY high, even on the CLEMENCY mode. The enemy stats dont change and the bonuses that your units get only apply if Athol is deployed in the map. There are several maps where this does not happen. * The EXP gain is attrociously low, so low that they fixed this in the sequel. CLEMENCY mode fixes this by giving you an extra +20 EXP per kill, making the game feel "normal". * Saving only after 5 turns. This is ridiculous as I had many instances where I made a mistake on the 4th turn and had to reload a save, wasting a lot of time. Again, they fixed this in the sequel. There are a lot of simmilarities to the old-school fire emblems (FE4 and FE5) but I would say that this game is better, even using a worse engine or having a more unpolished interface. If this game used the FE engine from the GBA games, for example, it would instantly become a masterpiece. I HIGHLY recommend this game for any fire emblem fans that want to experience an amazing story filled with meaningful characters.
Vestaria Saga's cheap visuals and lackluster performance are sure to leave a terrible first impression and I won't blame anyone who will be immediately turned off because of those, but if you can look past the first impression you will find Vestaria Saga is not just a Fire Emblem clone, but actually surpasses most games in the series. Vestaria Saga is a brutally difficulty but excellently designed SRPG and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys the old Fire Emblem games where you could never go back to grind or buy equipment.
Excelent Fire Emblem game, one of my all-time favourites. It is hard, has a little trick near the end that forced me to restart from begining. Very hard and has an even harder difficulty with 1 save every 5 turn as a leniency to make it even remotely beatable compared to the old era games.
