Cute yet spooky, story-focused game. The art style reminds me of painted paper dolls and is a joy to look at. The music fits the mood beautifully and surprised me with how elaborate it gets at times. Since the story is based on a Russian fairy tale, it's all narrated by one VA and kind of like being read a bed time story. Now, I don't understand Russian, but I could at least appreciate the different voices and inflections that were used so it was still fun to listen to. As for the gameplay itself, it's mostly walking and whacking, with the occasional jumping. It switches between Vasilisa - who is quite lovable - and her helpful little doll. The doll takes care of combat which is ... fine. I found the mobs to be a tiny bit frustrating because they don't have the most discernible tells in when they will attack sometimes, but their movements are funny and puppet-like and their designs, like the rest of the game, very interesting and also a bit spooky. The boss fights were fun though, if not very difficult, but that's not what the game is about anyway. The first part of the game has most of the walking, where Vasilisa has to make her way to the Baba Yaga's hut and go through a variety of environments, where she meets a number of Slavic folklore creatures and monsters, most of which get an entry in the in-game encyclopedia. (Only gripe with this is, while it's very interesting to read, the music stops dead in the menu, but that's a very minor nitpick.) At Baba Yaga's hut, Vasilisa gets to do chores - or rather, her doll does, since Vasilisa sleeps all day and goes through Yaga's maze of a basement at night. It's all fairly linear with only a handful of optional things to find, which makes sense since this is telling a story. Overall the game is well crafted, well told and well presented, and definitely worth playing.

Vasilisa and Baba Yaga, developed and published by Baba Yaga Games, is a richly atmospheric adventure game that draws heavily from the well-known Russian folktale about Vasilisa, a young woman navigating a mystical and often dangerous world. Set in a hauntingly beautiful version of the Slavic wilderness, the game places players in the shoes of Vasilisa as she ventures into Baba Yaga’s mysterious forest, seeking magical aid to overcome her challenges. This narrative-driven experience focuses on storytelling and immersion, weaving folklore, mythology, and traditional elements into every aspect of the game, from its environments to its gameplay mechanics. The gameplay is centered around exploration, puzzle-solving, and stealth rather than combat. Players guide Vasilisa through dark forests, eerie villages, and Baba Yaga’s enchanted mansion, encountering obstacles that require thoughtful problem-solving and careful use of resources. A key mechanic involves a magical doll gifted to Vasilisa by her mother, which acts as both a companion and a tool to assist in overcoming dangers and puzzles. The game challenges players to think strategically, using stealth to avoid hostile creatures and clever tactics to progress, creating a steady tension that complements the dark, fairy-tale atmosphere. One of the game’s most striking features is its hand-drawn art style, which uses muted, earthy tones to evoke the gloomy, mystical ambiance of Slavic folklore. The visuals are detailed and thoughtfully designed, with each environment telling its own story through its textures, lighting, and environmental storytelling. The character designs capture the mythical qualities of Baba Yaga and other creatures, balancing menace with an almost haunting beauty. This visual approach immerses players deeply in the world, giving the game a storybook feel that is both eerie and enchanting. The auditory elements of Vasilisa and Baba Yaga play a crucial role in building atmosphere. The soundtrack draws inspiration from traditional folk music of central and southern Russia, lending authenticity and emotional weight to the experience. Additionally, the narration is delivered in a regional South Russian dialect, adding a layer of cultural richness and making it feel like a traditional tale passed down through generations. The game also includes an in-depth encyclopedic feature that educates players about Slavic myths, customs, and characters, curated with the help of folklorists, which not only deepens the player’s connection to the story but also enhances world-building. Critics and players alike have praised Vasilisa and Baba Yaga for its compelling narrative, unique art style, and the atmospheric way it brings folklore to life. Many appreciate its dedication to cultural authenticity and storytelling, while also enjoying the puzzle and stealth gameplay that keeps the experience engaging without relying on combat-heavy action. Some players note that the gameplay can feel somewhat repetitive and might not appeal to those looking for fast-paced or more varied mechanics. However, the game’s strength lies in its immersive story and carefully crafted world, which many find rewarding and memorable. Overall, Vasilisa and Baba Yaga stands out as an evocative adventure that appeals to fans of folklore and narrative-driven games. It offers a thoughtful, atmospheric journey into Slavic mythology, where exploration and puzzle-solving are intertwined with rich storytelling and cultural depth. While it may not satisfy those seeking high-octane gameplay, its immersive experience, beautiful art, and authentic sound design make it a notable and worthwhile title for players who appreciate a more contemplative and story-focused approach to adventure gaming. This game has the most evident value: it introduces the players to the slavic folklore - at least to the most canonical its characters. Some can say it has primitive and boring gameplay, but the game is not about mechanics, it's about atmosphere of traditional folk tales.
