An effective Nicotine Patch for ZZZ addiction. As someone who has recently made the very healthy decision to drop gacha games entirely from my life, this is exactly the game I've been looking for. Okay. I'll start this off by saying that a lot of negative reviews are mentioning that the game has a lack of depth, both in story and gameplay, and they're correct. The gameplay is parry-focused, which has become a strong trend in the action game market as of late. The story (that I've seen thus far) is short, to the point, and lacking depth or subtlety. And the roguelike mechanics are not as immaculately balanced as games that are at the front of the roguelike market right now. However this is a game that is aimed at a very specific market. First, to explain the competition: Gacha games are targeted at individuals with jobs. People who are short on time, tired, and just want to feel like they're actually playing games like they once did. These individuals have money to spend and a childhood of gaming they want to return to. The techniques they use are focused on making an easy game flashy and addictive, and feel like it has depth when it doesn't. That along with daily chores to build up sunk cost fallacy, and gambling mechanics to keep people putting money into it, locks people in to what under the slightest scrutiny is a very simple game with a very very hostile architecture. Ved: Recure is a non-gacha game targeting that same audience, using the same basic techniques, without any of the hostile game design. As well as fixing some of the inherent problems that gacha games usually tack on. The gameplay has work and love poured into the feel and flash of a combat system that makes you feel good just for playing it. No bars to entry, no daily chores. Play the story, unlock the roster. Do runs, get gear. The gear has no fluff or needless stats, but it is rolled and randomized to give you something to do. Not to lock you in. Also as someone who usually struggles with parry-focused action games, the more lenient mechanics make me feel like I can actually play the game without torturing myself. (The training room is also really nice, and very helpful for learning boss attack timings that I initially struggled with on Hard difficulty.) The story is short and to the point, but gacha games usually extend their stories to pointlessly wordy lengths, and say a lot about nothing while the plot goes nowhere because a live service game can never actually end. I'm not expecting much from the story of Ved: Recure going forward from where I'm at right now, but I do look forward to it because it's pointed directly at me rather than something lofty or politically washed. Overall, as a recovering gacha game addict, this might just be the game I've been looking for. I'm not recommending this for everyone. Its not a modern gem of a title. But everything that comes out these days I find impenetrable. I'm putting this review out on launch day with only two hours played because that's most of the time I have today. But I want to give it a positive review today to help it out. If this review feels relatable to you, then I sincerely hope you also find that game you're looking for, even if it's not Ved: Recure.
it's sloppy. it's unbalanced. it's frustrating. it's highly exploitable. it's simple. its design follows many current trends, but deviates in bizarre ways. after having cleared it on hard mode, I conclude that this game.... is really really really stupid. i cannot recommend it enough for freaks that love fascinatingly flawed passion projects.
Initial impressions seem decent so far. They added japanese voice acting which wasn't present in the last demo I played. Its roguelike with a bit silly story but the gameplay is where is at. I like the ability to customize my load out and put the skills earned son whatever slot I want like on regular attacks, parryies or dodge etc. There is permanent upgrades from buying equipment and the equipment slots give you upgrades that can let you tailor to certain builds. Again the story is a bit silly and I wouldn't expect much there. You need to progress story to unlock more characters.
