Viviette is an atmospheric indie horror experience developed and published by DYA Games that channels the spirit of classic 16-bit survival horror while carving out its own identity through deliberate pacing, environmental storytelling, and puzzle-driven exploration. Rather than relying on shock tactics or action-heavy encounters, the game builds tension slowly, using isolation, sound design, and uncertainty to create a persistent sense of unease. From its opening moments, Viviette signals that it is less interested in startling the player and more focused on immersing them in a haunting space that gradually reveals its secrets. The story centers on Jules Fosset, who visits the ominous Neuville Mansion with his sister Felice and a group of friends to investigate rumors surrounding the estate. A sudden storm traps Jules inside, and Felice vanishes under disturbing circumstances, leaving him alone to explore the mansion’s dark halls. The narrative unfolds subtly through found notes, environmental clues, and visual symbolism rather than direct exposition. This fragmented storytelling encourages players to piece together the mansion’s tragic history themselves, lending the experience a sense of mystery and emotional weight that grows stronger the deeper one ventures into the estate. Exploration is the backbone of Viviette’s gameplay. The mansion is intricately designed, with rooms that feel interconnected and purposeful, often looping back on themselves in ways that reinforce disorientation. There is no map to rely on, so players must learn the layout organically, remembering landmarks and shortcuts while navigating darkness and locked doors. This design choice enhances immersion but also demands patience, as backtracking is frequent and often necessary to solve puzzles or uncover hidden details. Puzzles form the primary obstacles to progression and range from straightforward item usage to more abstract logic challenges. Many puzzles require careful observation of the environment, reading cryptic notes, or recognizing visual patterns scattered throughout the mansion. When they land well, these puzzles feel satisfying and integrated into the setting, reinforcing the sense that the mansion itself is part of the challenge. However, some puzzles can feel obtuse or poorly signposted, occasionally pushing players toward trial-and-error solutions that risk breaking immersion. This uneven difficulty curve is one of the game’s more divisive aspects. Adding constant pressure to exploration and puzzle-solving is the presence of Felice, now possessed and roaming the mansion unpredictably. Her footsteps, breathing, and sudden appearances create a persistent sense of dread, forcing players to stay alert even during quieter moments. This stalking mechanic heightens tension, but it can also clash with puzzle-focused gameplay, particularly when solving more complex challenges that require time and concentration. While Felice’s presence is thematically effective, her interruptions can sometimes feel frustrating rather than frightening. Visually, Viviette stands out through its handcrafted pixel art. The 16-bit-inspired aesthetic is rich with detail, and the mansion’s environments are distinct and carefully composed, avoiding the generic look often associated with similar indie horror titles. Lighting plays a crucial role, with darkness obscuring vision and amplifying fear, while light sources become precious tools rather than mere visual effects. The art direction balances nostalgia with originality, making the game feel like a tribute rather than a pastiche. Sound design is equally important in shaping the experience. Ambient noises, distant creaks, and subtle musical cues work together to maintain a constant sense of unease. Silence is used just as effectively as sound, often leaving players to imagine threats lurking just beyond the edge of the screen. The soundtrack is restrained but effective, reinforcing mood without overpowering the quiet tension that defines much of the gameplay. Narratively, Viviette offers multiple endings that reflect how thoroughly players explore the mansion and how well they piece together its story. This encourages replay for those interested in uncovering every layer of the narrative, though the core experience remains largely the same across playthroughs. The story’s conclusion is intentionally understated, prioritizing atmosphere and implication over dramatic resolution, which may resonate strongly with some players while leaving others wanting more explicit answers. Overall, Viviette is a thoughtful and deliberate horror game that excels in atmosphere, visual identity, and slow-burn tension. Its puzzle design and stalking mechanics are not without flaws, but these rough edges do little to undermine the strength of its core experience. For players who appreciate retro-inspired horror, environmental storytelling, and games that reward careful observation and patience, Viviette offers a memorable journey into a haunted space that lingers long after the final scene fades to black. good game overall but some of the puzzles could really use a hint button or something. maybe it’s just me, but i had to look something up and i hate doing that. also got the bad ending, so i looked up how to get the good one because i really didn’t have it in me to replay. one of the actions you need to do is so random, i honestly can’t think of any reason you’d do it unless it’s a second playthrough. “the hay thing”.
