I already loved this game despite it's clunkyness. Picked it up again after the 100 years war update dropped. In short; I'm drinking Hertog Jan while playing as Hertog Jan as i thrust a Falchion into a frenchman's eyesocket in the midst of a melee, cavalry crashing into cavalry and my men decimating the English dismounted knights as they joined the French. In the end, Brabant is as large as the entirety of the Netherlands, Belgium, and most of France as my campaign comes to an abrupt end due to capturing 45 settlements. Would've loved to continue untill the entire map is mine, but man i guess it's a way to tell me to stop playing for 12 hours. To the dev; Kerel ik heb als casual gamer 12 uur aan stuk gespeeld wat ik nooit doe en ik gok 24 uur totaal op de nieuwe campaign map, eindelijk iemand die wel begrijpt wat historisch accuraat is. Petje af. Als oud buhurt vechter en reenactor ben ik zeer onder de indruk, ik kijk uit naar de volgende update! Tevens echt bedankt want Bannerlord crasht bij elke update weer met de medieval mods... Vanaf nu alleen maar Voor de Kroon! Tldr; Make Brabant Great Again - Recommended - Bannerlord can f- off - Go play Voor de Kroon!
This is a brutal violent medieval game for those who want mount and blade with more combat and less quests. The devs nailed it. The Pros 1: The battle visuals: Cav clashes leave men and horses flying, weapons break, it what you would expect to really see. Battles are visually chaotic with each house having their own banner (which is a good thing) and the fighting gets hectic. The gore is one of a kind. durning a fight- men run away, wounds men legit craw alway from combat. 2. The audio- Clash of weapons, the cheering, the ambient sounds, sounds of the wounded and dieing- its all fantastic 3. has a campaign map 4. unit and player customization. 5. unique things like to get a better visual of the battle- you can take flight as a bird over the battle feild What needs to be improved 1. Campaign map needs to be clearer. We need an easier way to see our cities, what their policies are, whats in them, etc 2.RTS CAM- would love a pause ability 3. on the campaign I would like a better way to interact with officers. Somthing to make them more important. Right now they dont really seem to matter other than just in battle or you have no connect to them. The Bad: 1. The controls- the whole press 1-7 thing doesnt work well. Tab doesnt always display the right number for the unit. I like how everything slows down but maybe give us the option to slow it down a bit more to give commands. In the heat of combat its not really practical to hit space 4 times to change formation and then try to move the mouse arround to just get the right unit to attack 2. list out what the F1 commands do....They are no where to be found.
This game is great. What it lacks in quality (such as the clunkiness of the battles themselves), it makes up for with the beautiful creativity options that the game allows. However I do have 3 major problems with it. For starters, a common complaint among players such as myself: the cavalry is just completely broken. 2 cavalry units plus your character (cause you'll kill a lot of enemies obviously before you die) can wipe out a solid 3-4 infantry/ranged units with severe losses but not defeat. Second, when using the before mentioned creation feature for designing units, factions, campaigns, castles, and sword (although the sword creation feature is depressingly limited imo), I have encountered a problem multiple times where the game just outright doesn't save my creation after pressing the save button and confirming it. It is very frustrating spending time all for it to be wasted and having to do it all over again. Finally, the way sieges and battles in general works is really annoying. If all of your officers die in battle (the characters you play as) then your men apparently lose the ability to fight and you lose the whole battle. If the enemy ai loses all of their officers, they may start to retreat slowly but its not an instant dub for you. In sieges especially, I've come to find out that when all of your infantry units are killed off, even if you have an entire 2-3 archer units still firing at the castle/fort, you lose the entire siege (which is very costly to set up in the first place). However, if you manage to win an extremely hard defense against the attacking infantry sieging your castle/fort, you may as well take a dagger and stab yourself with it because the enemy's archer units all the way outside where you could literally never reach them before dying still get to play and finish you off until you lose no matter how hard you fought to save the damn place. So all in all, I would honestly give this game a 6.5-7/10.
Game has a lot to work on. I would personally rate this game a 6-7/10 and yes would recommend it on the current game state it is at because it is still in development Combat (Open field): 6/10: The combat is amazing and cinematic but the calvary is extremely overpowered and essentially in my opinion makes the infantry feel worthless. for example, I had "elite tier" troops that went up against the very basic first calvary you get without having a castle, and that one cav unit of 30 people decimated my 2 60 unit elite troop formation. I believe there needs to be a bit more balance in the aspect of calvary, in my personal perspective. Siege: 10/10: it's what you expect. bloodbath World map and settlement management: 5-6/10: The world map is awesome, which i know a lot of people show disfavor towards. I like the map and the way it is laid out. Now as far as settlement management, i do think there is a major setback in that. The management of it is easy, but easy in the aspect that you are very limited in the buildings you can make. Also, I wish there were cultural buildings that you can build or religious buildings you can make. Even if there were buildings that you could make that was geared towards the personality of your kingdom. (Greedy, military, E.T.C) I would recommend this game, i think with time and feedback from the player base to developers (if they read any of these reviews) I do believe this could be a beautiful game in the future.
