Instead of traditional percentage-based hit rolls, the game emphasizes actual ballistic calculations, positioning, line of fire, cover and elevation. This makes tactical decisions feel more consequential than simply hoping that a 75% shot connects. Between missions you manage your mobile base, recruit personnel, improve equipment, negotiate contracts and make decisions affecting the campaign. This gives Warhounds a proper strategic layer rather than making it nothing more than a sequence of tactical battles. However, this is also where the game feels most derivative. If you've played XCOM , Jagged Alliance or Phoenix Point extensively, much of the campaign structure will feel familiar. The alternative-future African setting is an interesting choice, and the developers are going for an intentionally exaggerated old-school mercenary/action-movie atmosphere. Visually, it is competent rather than spectacular. The game is clearly more interested in tactical readability than visual spectacle. Warhounds is a solid tactical RPG for players who want more XCOM -style combat but dislike artificial hit percentages. Its true-ballistics approach is its biggest selling point. Positioning, cover and line-of-sight matter in a way that makes firefights feel more physically grounded. The mercenary management and base layer provide enough strategic depth to support the tactical missions. But don't expect an XCOM killer. Read some negative reviews and people are honestly nitpicking about weird things. At least the game launched fully instead of sitting in early access for years and ending up nowhere! Played a couple missions, noticed a few bugs and a slopy camera, but it is still a very enjoyable experience because the core tactics are simple and fun at the same time, so it definetly works for me
Game is great overall. if you like xcom you will like this, it is that simple. i would like the option the customize my veterans tho. it is so lame being forced to use a guy that looks like his on vacation in his shorts and Hawaii ♥♥♥♥, becouse his extra perk makes him directly better then anyone else. i refuse to use them tho it breaks the immersion for me. also i get inclusion is important for some people. i would just like an option for " male only " female only " mixed " that way everyone can play the game how they like, and i like my mercs to be male. tiny girls with huge guns again breaks the immersion. other then that i have been having a blast hope the devs can acomidate us , since i know a lot of players will agree with me on this had a few crashes but the game saves often so i dident really lose much and it was never the same place it crashed. been seeing some people in the reviews saying the loading times are long. for me it is like 10 secs to load from world map into the tactical map. maybe its a rig issue i dont know
Finally a turn-based tactics game that doesnt treat me like a child. Been playing for a couple of hours now and im cautiously optimistic tbh. If youre coming from modern XCOM expecting 99% hit-chance misses, forget it... Warhounds feels much closer to old school Jagged Alliance or the original UFO Defense. Ballistics are super lethal, cover actually matters and one bad turn will get your whole squad wiped. The mercenary management loop feels solid so far. My only gripes are the camera angles being a bit wonky indoors, and the inventory ui is slightly clunky. But mechanicaly? This is a gem. If you like punishing tactical games its a must buy.
