As a amateur lover of the insectoid and arachnoid world, I can't recommend this sacred chest highly enough to arachnophobes, because you can turn this fear from the fearful into the pleasant by recognizing that cruel nature also has the grace to glimpse us with its senile humour and its way of carrying out the cycle of life it has been given. I therefore recommend Webbed to all nature lovers and those who fear it, as it was lovingly made to teach and get to know in an alternate comical cute way this natural fruit that has been given to us all in different ways and creations of living.

Never before have I so badly wanted to be a spider. It's so fun to swing around and build webs in this game. It's short, but the price is very low for such a well made project, and there are plenty of collectibles and cosmetics if you want to squeeze just a little bit more out of the game. 2 pedipalps up.

Okay, I'm like an actual big-budget triple-A engine dev. Y'know, the big fancy game engines? I'm used to just being able to implement whatever I need into the engine to be able to build the game we need to build. So, I tend to look at things like GameMaker Studio with a sense of "Eh... There's probably not that many types of games you could make with this." All to say, that when I started playing this game, I just exclaimed "You can DO this stuff in GAME MAKER?!". It's technically quite impressive, from what I understand of the limitations of the engine. Big respect to the developer, it's well beyond what I thought the engine was capable of. From an actual gameplay perspective, it's not amazing, but it's novel, and a well-scoped 4-5 hour experience. Certainly well worth the price for some neat mechanics that I don't think you can get anywhere else. There's a fair amount of physics jank given the nature of the mechanics, but the game seems to be quite resilient to it, and I'm surprised how well it all holds up.

I’m going to level with you. I bought this game on a complete whim because I am highly arachnophobic but jumping spiders are the one species that don’t make my stomach turn to look at and I was hoping that it would be beneficial for me to work on my phobia through playing the game. Plus it was on sale, so why not. Let me tell you that in the hour I have played this game I have already more than gotten my moneys worth. The art style is cartoony and bright while still holding on to most if not all of the anatomical integrity of each of the bug species it portrays. The controls are tight and easy to learn (though proving to be difficult to master, granted that is just user error as I’m terrible at platforming lol) and never once has even a single movement gone wrong that i didn’t immediately feel like “yeah that was on me.”. The platforming is by no means hard, just pay attention to where you’re swinging and you’ll be fine. The music is cheerful and playful and fits the atmosphere of the game incredibly well. The dialogue is so far very snappy and fun and you truly do not know whats coming at you until you experience it. The character animations are very bouncy and almost ‘rubbery’ in a very charming way that is a delight to watch. All around it is a very good vibe so far and I’m excited to experience more. Some silly highlights - web laser, thats it, that’s the thought. pew pew, get webbed. - Engineer ants desire to build an airship - A moth who not 30 seconds after meeting you is like “hey sorry about your bf spider getting kidnapped, heres a bunch of stuff to do!” which i can only assume is a desperate attempt at sympathetic distraction (very relatable) - LEAF PARACHUTES, I REPEAT, YOU CAN GRAB A LEAF AND GENTLY FLOAT DOWN TO THE GROUND LIKE A LITTLE STUNT SPIDER - THE DANCE FEATURE!!! MY GOODNESS IT’S JUST A DARLING LITTLE THING TO BE ABLE TO STICK YOUR LITTLE SPIDER ARMS UP NEXT TO A BUG AND WIGGLE JUST TO HAVE THEM WIGGLE BACK! WE ARE BONDING! All of this said, I haven’t even mentioned my favorite part of this game. At the beginning of this review i mentioned I’m personally arachnophobic and was using this game to maybe help that. Well, I am happy to report that that plan appears to be on track to go swimmingly not just because of the EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS GAME being charming as all heck, BUT within the settings menu, there is an accessibility menu, and one of the options on this menu is labeled with a straight forward setting description “Arachnophobia mode: turns all spiders into friendly blobs. does not affect gameplay.” The game that is built to allow you to play as a spider and interact with other spiders still takes into consideration that people may be uncomfortable with that, even just a bit, and offers a remedy for it. That is genuinely the most “you didn’t have to do that but I’m so thankful that you did” accessibility setting I’ve ever seen. When you purchase this game, you know exactly what you’re getting in to. There is no sugar coating it. You are a spider, amongst other bugs in the game, you will see other spiders, you signed up for that, and still there is an option to turn off the 8 legs and make these darling little arachnids into even more darling little orbs of color that undulate in a very squishy manner instead of waving their little arms in order to dance. You still have agency in whether or not you need to look at the spiders, and I think the best bit about this is the fact that this setting exists outside of the separate save files and can be turned off and on at ANY POINT. Wanna ease into things and play the majority of the game as a string slinging orb? go for it! Wanna dive right into the game and breeze through things without a second thought? Great! Started out looking at the spiders at first and found out it’s just a little bit too much for you but you wanna keep playing? Fantastic news, orb mode! Wanna alternate from orb to spider from map chunk to map chunk just for the fun of it? you can do that! The fact that this games developers have quietly acknowledged one of the most common phobias and how debilitating it can be and (whether intentionally or not I’m unsure but it’s happening) provided an outlet for people like me to take things at their own pace and CHANGE THEIR MIND WITHOUT HAVING TO START A NEW FILE is just wild to me. I was not expecting it and this one little setting neatly tucked away in an options menu was enough to get me just a little bit emotional. Genuinely, this is my new comfort game, and I am so excited to see where the story goes. 8/10 only for the fact that I haven’t played enough to feel right slapping down a 10/10, but I’m sure that will change very soon. Please, even if you don’t like spiders, give this game a shot. I promise you won’t regret it.
