Unlike other "storybook games" I have read on Steam, this one actually gives you many story choices to make and many role-playing options. It is truly a role-playing game! Just for that, it deserves to be recommended and appreciated in comparison to many games out there that barely offer a few story choices. Moreover, the story actually changes based off your decisions and your... failures too. I actually failed a major action as a garou (no spoilers), but the story continued differently. My failure became a new path ... That is rather brilliant design. The choices are not just illusions of choice. The art is also more original and richer than some other "storybook games" and the UI is well done. Along with the dialog choices, the game also has Werewolf "stats" like Rage and Willpower notably. If you run out of Rage or Willpower, again the story can change! The theme is pretty much "Werewolf 101" (read: a great introduction to that lore). It follows 100% the Werewolf The Apocalypse tabletop lore, but in a rather realistic and credible setting (a real forest in Poland). The first half is more subtle, and it makes for better writing. There is a middle part that is more an exposition dump of Werewolf concepts, and so the quality of the writing takes a hit during that bit. The writing and story branches for the ending part is also rather rich and impressive for the number of options. Addendum : when I started the story a second time, I was surprised to get totally different sites and events, and I met different characters! Time : it took me 3 hours for one playthrough. It clearly has very decent re-playability. The game has a flaw here: it does not allow any manual saves, so you have to replay the whole thing (unless you copy the hidden save file).

It's an okay werewolf game, which therefore makes it an above-average werewolf game. The sound effects are super immersive, the artstyle is unique and so vivid, and the Ahroun route is quite fun. I apparently took some very unpopular choices! (how in the world is the achievement for fighting the police so rare in a WtA game?) One BIG positive of this game is that it does the BG3-like thing (I know it's older than that game, but it's the first and most mainstream title that springs to mind that does this) of setting everything up so that a player that is heavily leaning in one direction will always experience content they like even when they take the path not expected of them: I have a feeling the streaming scene as I experienced it might've been radically different from the norm because I was a full moon-born and went with Daniel, and I loved what I saw. On the other hand, if your stats aren't to your liking and you're more than 50% through the game (there's a progress bar in the pause menu), you might wanna reset, precisely because of this. I especially enjoyed the amount of specific cultural callbacks and symbology here - It'd come off as pandering anywhere else, but in the specific context of this particular story it makes the game feel more grounded, where other similar games tend to approach rebellion at a much more surface level. (Looking at you, Earthblood.) Also I like that the game lets you do stupid ♥♥♥♥ and face the consequences of your actions. This sparks joy. Some extra thoughts below (all of my thoughts come with extra thoughts. No I will not format them reasonably), but TLDR: Buy it on sale. It's worth playing, and short enough that it won't waste your time if you decide it's Just Okay. I actually think it'd be a wilder, trippier experience for someone who ISN'T familiar with the source material. Some specific things I'd have liked done better (spoilers ahoy): * I was deeply disappointed I didn't get a choice to join the Red Talons, when the possibility was very openly hinted at prior to the identity scene. I was wondering how they'd justify that. I didn't expect the answer was outright blueballing me :( * W5 lore is W5 lore. Those bits were egh. But I will not fault the writers for the material they were given to work with, that's out of their hands. More of a warning for those familiar. * The writing was excellent in parts, mediocre in many others. The First Change sequence is incredible and by far the highlight of the whole game (in my experience, among the scenes I've experienced in my first playthrough.) as well as the visions, dreams (and callbacks to the dreams), and situations where the player character is in Crinos (the simple writing style of the game actually shines here, as it excellently communicates the experience of existing in warform) and the rest has a very matter-of-fact narration that often falls flat. Some more overt prose would've been a much needed pinch of salt. *Despite being a Werewolf Game About Werewolves, the Garou characters felt an order of magnitude flatter than the humans. Only ones I even remember are Olga, because you need to interact with her a lot if you Choose Violence, and Daniel, because despite having the depth of a puddle the writers' impression of a Lupus-born werewolf is intriguing and super fun.

I just played Werewolf: The Apocalypse - Heart of the Forest for the first time and I absolutely loved it! This is exactly how a "choose your own story" game should be done! You technically play as Maia, but every single decision feels meaningful and really shapes how the story unfolds!! I especially liked the clever system of Rage, Willpower and Health. My inner perfectionist was constantly trying to keep my Rage balanced, since I went for a more pacifistic approach, but I loved how every stat actually mattered in different ways. You meet a lot of characters in Białowieża (where Maia returns to discover her familys past) and at first I was a bit confused about who’s who. But the character sheet system made it easy to check their relationships and how they felt about you. The game’s layout is simple but beautiful: text and choices on the left, stunning artwork on the right. The art style is unique, moody and fits the atmosphere perfectly. I’m mainly a Vampire: The Masquerade player and this was my first Werewolf game. It was awesome that the story naturally guided you through a kind of "Werewolf personality test", assigning you a role within your new pack. I ended up as a Theurge and it actually resonated a lot with who I am in real life! The lore around the Wyld, the Wyrm and the Weaver was fascinating and I learned much more about the Werewolf side of the World of Darkness than I expected. It all makes perfect sense, since the Garou are Gaia’s warriors. I also loved how the game offers little tooltips explaining terms when you hover over them, great design touch! The game has strong replay value, too. I’m already curious to see what happens if I go all in on Rage or take a more aggressive path next time. If I had to mention one downside… it’s way too short. My first playthrough took me around four hours and it honestly felt like the story had just begun when it ended! But maybe that’s the best kind of complaint, it left me wanting more.

Good visual novel Interesting story even if a bit simple... A lot of it is effectively introduction to Werewolf: the Apocalypse setting so it's friendly to people unfamiliar with it Visuals are good, sound is good, writing is good Small length is the only downside i can think of, but i suppose that means that there is less filler

This game was super short, took me about 2 and a half hours to finish a play through, although I might go through again and make different choices. I pushed myself to not "cheat" and google choices and consequences and just tried to see how it played out, and it made for a great, rewarding story. Story was interesting, and I really enjoyed the art style. I know nothing of the table top game, so can't compare it to this but stand alone it was interesting and fun. Be prepared to read a lot.. but if you like Werewolves, get involved.
