I love these kinds of indie games. These cheap games that no one has ever heard of but turn out to be little nuggets of gold. This is an interesting story and concept for a game and I think it is executed really well. Without spoiling too much, you play as this guy, Cliff, who owns this roadside diner with his wife Nora. She is unfortunately killed by this drunk in a rage. Cliff is clearly dealing with a lot of trauma from this and this is kinda what you get to experience throughout this game. It isnt just about Cliff though, we also get to know the different characters visiting the diner over a longer unspecified amount of time. While I do think I understand the story on the surface, I feel like it has some deeper meaning to it, that I dont think I am really understanding what is. I feel like the whole end of the world isnt really the end of the world as much as it is the end of Cliffs world at the diner, but I am not really that good at symbolism and hidden meanings. While the story and gameplay are done really well, it does have a minor issue if you can call it that. The only problem I really found, maybe besides the lack of direction at times, is that you can kinda softlock yourself by picking up too much stuff and cooking too many unwanted meals. This happens because there is no way to discard cooked meals, at least from what I am aware of, and since you only have 4 slots of stuff you can carry at once, you can quickly become overencumbered with no way to discard it. Though it is possible that I just dont know how to and in that case, this isnt an issue. I got this on sale for like 2 bucks and I can definitely recommend it at that. I can also recommend it at full price, if you really like these unique stories that are told in new and interesting ways. So, While We Wait Here isn't quite the apocalyptic kitchen management game described on its Steam page. It's a two-hour long group therapy session dressed in retro horror visuals, and casually slapping ingredients together is your personal grounding technique. There are no spoilers in this review. Gameplay + Details Generally, story-driven exploration and dialogue options with occasional inventory management. You can't burn food or make meaningful mistakes in the kitchen, and there are no timers. Controls. I preferred Keyboard/Mouse, but controller works well. Playtime. ~2 hours to finish. 100% requires a second run. Settings/Options. Standard fare, plus colorblind options. ⚠️ If you struggle with motion sickness: immediately go to "Options," slow down the camera on all axes, turn off VSYNC, and be prepared to fiddle with graphics sliders until you find a setting that works. What Works For Me ✅ Compelling and varied character stories. ✅ Stellar voice acting, especially by Abigail Turner and Grant Corvin. ✅ Multiple possible endings. ✅ The retro pixellated look is really fun here. ✅ Destroying cars is cathartic. ✅ So is spray-painting. ✅ And cooking without timers. What Doesn't Work For Me 🟥 See above notes about motion sickness. Bleck. 🟥 You do cook and serve orders, but only infrequently. 🟥 It's not entirely clear how to get every ending. 🟥 Some stories feel rushed or incomplete. 🟥 Game goes hard on in-your-face symbolism. 🟥 Food-safe gloves are cosmetic only. Final Thoughts + Recommendation I went into While We Wait Here expecting the same tight time/resource management loop I adored in Bad Vices's previous game, [url=https://store.steampowered.com/app/1615290/Ravenous_Devils/?curator_clanid=45365863] Ravenous Devils , and was initially disappointed by how forgiving Lone Glass Diner's kitchen is; however, I quickly warmed to the more human stories and absolute mind-fuck-ery happening here. Where Ravenous felt like a game, WWWH feels more like a cinematic introspection on life, love, and loss. There's a lot I want to talk about, but little I can say until you've played it. There are some truly brutal scenes softened by shared connection, a jump scare or two that weren't particularly scary, and a hilariously out-of-place minigame that was more fun than it had any right to be. While the story and symbolism can be heavy-handed at times, it's generally thoughtful and well done. If you enjoy psychological films or laidback cooking games, then I'd suggest shilling out a few bucks and playing this on a cold evening. It's a very short game but for the $2.74 I got it for on sale, I'm more than satisfied with my experience. My only like gripe was that the constant loading screens, for such a short experience it really does take away so much from the engrossment to be black screened every 3 minutes. Besides that, wonderful little game.

A cozy yet unsettling diner sim where you serve food and listen to customers as the world possibly ends outside. It’s a short, story-rich experience with branching dialogue and a haunting atmosphere. The retro visuals and eerie soundtrack really set the tone, making it feel both intimate and apocalyptic. Overall, it is a nice narrative-driven game.

While We Wait Here A very chill psychedelic game mostly centered around simple cooking in an ordinary American diner. Pancakes, burgers, coffee, milkshakes, and scrambled eggs with bacon — the classics. Oh, and I almost forgot about the beer and whiskey. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3447946815 The game works well as a reboot after a long day, doesn’t demand too much attention from the player, and tries not to overload you. It can be completed in a couple of hours, a nice game from the developers of Ravenous Devils, which is also about cooking and management. It's short, and in general, you can say that this is now their signature style. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3448223786
