PREAMBLE: For starters; I am a huge fan of this studio's previous title, Void Bastards, and have played it through several times. Wild Bastards share a lot of DNA with it's elder sibling, but where Void Bastards focused on the importance of stealth and being a diligent scavenger, Wild Bastards lean in another direction. Wild Bastards is much more direct action oriented game, rewarding charging into the fray - this was an aspect I often tried to get from Void Bastards, because of the amazing weaponry and skills in that game. Both games have you start out at a severely underpowered point, but in Wild Bastards, as you build your characters you have a better chance of seeing each of them shine to their fullest. GAMEPLAY: This game is for you if you enjoy: - class-based First Person Shooters - crisp, beautiful comic book-/graphic novel-like art styles - well written inter-party banter - rogue-likes/rogue-lites, but also want a bit of story This game centers around a character-rich roster of well-written- and acted cowboy-pulp action heroes. Each plays differently and you get to pair them up so you can try out different combinations. I thoroughly enjoyed overland/space push-your-luck planning and resource management - even though they seem to build on the same core, it seems fairly expanded from the systems that was seen in Void Bastards. THE CHALLENGE MODE: When I unlocked the Challenge mode and tried it out, I was frustrated at first. This was mainly because I had gotten used to the upgraded versions of my heroes, but as I examined each challenge and approached them each as a puzzle, I started to enjoy them immensely. I had to assess the drawbacks of the challenge and measure them against the advantages my heroes (potentially) offered and lean into my the strengths I had at my disposal. Before I knew it, I had played through a nice chuck of them and had a ball doing it! And I managed to unlock neat gear for future playthroughs. CONCLUSION: If you enjoyed the gameplay or the look of Void Bastards and enjoy action games, you are going to have a great time with Wild Bastards! I am huge fan of both and can't wait to see what new games come out from Blue Manchu in the future.

Loved Void Bastards and if you like that you'll like Wild Bastards- and while this isn't a sequel, its a similar game loop and comparisons will be made... this is by far an inferior game to Void Bastards. Take this as a luke-warm recommendation, I still had a lot of fun with it. Wild Bastards never really feels like you 'get going' - like in Void when you have some upgrades, if feels like you can start taking on riskier levels, whereas in Wild you're tied to the characters and their abilities and upgrades, which over time all your characters just sort of get better. By no means this is a bad thing, it's just different. During levels, you're never pressed for time to complete them, in contrast again to Void where you always had an air limit timer - but this usually means you can take your time to cheese the enemies, by getting an angle where you can shoot their leg or something - which is often useful because some enemies can feel a bit 'hit-scan-ish' - there is a mechanic in the game similar to Void's pirates where you're being chased by three different 'princes' - early game these can be a bit of a pain, but by mid-late game they're trivialised (speaking as someone playing in hard) as just inconvenient encounters. The 4th and final prince that can arrive is apparently unbeatable but I never stayed around to find out - I was always 'done' by then anyway and onto the next section. Part of the games strategy is selecting the right Wild Bastard(s) when dropping into a level to deal with whatever enemies are there, but in terms of strategy overall, this is about it. No management of fuel or food or anything else. There is a game mechanic where your team can be friends or foes - which seemed to run itself in my play though - I rarely had to use beans to resolve any disputes. Depending on your choices, the game can feel quite difficult if you selected the wrong type of character for the enemies you're fighting - but then you also get the opposite, it can be too easy if you've selected the right match up. Sometimes levels last less than 60 seconds as you whip through them. The characters are all varied, and I found them all useful one way or another. Some of the less conventional characters (i.e ones that don't have guns and shoot 'normally') I initially didn't like, I found to be some of the best and overpowered, while some of the more conventional characters (pew pew gun types) were actually more useful as 'buffer' characters, or characters you take along because of their passive skills (like healing or regenerating armour after a level or something like that) Some decent voice acting, and a silly but entertaining loose story, no different to watching a cartoon at times. Under 20 hours to complete the game on hard, and some replayability in here too. Overall, it's an ok game if you set your expectations below Void Bastards and look to buy when its about a tenner.

This game is incredibly stylish and well made. It looks great. So, why did I refund it? Simply put; it's not what I expected. I expected a stylish run and gun shooter like Doom or Serious Sam. Something fast paced where you mow down hordes, but need to play well as you can still die. Wild Bastards is NOT that. It's a very slow, methodical and tactical game. Playing it like Doom or Serious Sam would get you killed, and fast. It's a roguelike first and FPS second. And there's nothing wrong with that, it's just not what I expected nor wanted.

I've completed Void Bastards a few times and put about 6 hours of playtime into Wild Bastards. The new game is quite different, with no focus on stealth like the previous game. I've really enjoyed the game so far and found the progression to be really engaging. Unlocking new characters and using their unique weapons and abilities is fun as well as choosing which upgrades for them. I've found the board-game like strategy really fun with the various things you need to be considering. While the voice-acting and character designs are really unique and interesting, the story-line so far seems a bit too simple but it hasn't taken away from my enjoyment of the game. Looking forward to finishing my first play through and then hunting down as many achievements as I can.

While Wild Bastards is labeled as a roguelite, it doesn’t fully feel that way during the main game. Sure, it has procedural generation, unlocks, and different paths, but it’s not run-based—unless you consider a 10+ hour, story-driven experience to be a “run.” You do unlock a true roguelike mode after beating the story, but only if you’re willing to complete it first. Thankfully, the writing is excellent, and the choice to unlock new characters as you go keeps things engaging. Each character has unique skills and playstyles, though some are more effective than others (hello Sarge). However, you don’t get to just stick with your favorites. The game forces you to rotate characters due to mechanics like exhaustion and feuds, which can be tough if you’re not comfortable with a particular character’s playstyle. There’s also a big difficulty spike when you first encounter the porcupines. I died a few times before realizing that collecting aces is key, as it’s the only way to upgrade your team over time. All the other power-ups are temporary, so you’re constantly learning new mechanics. Once you get the hang of navigating the planets, the difficulty is pretty manageable. The arena shooter gameplay is solid, though enemies can blend into the background at times, making them hard to spot (luckily, there are some visual cues). I’d recommend Wild Bastards to anyone looking for a fun, story-driven adventure with great voice acting and interesting mechanics.
