At launch, this looks like another case of Evolve: a brilliantly fun multiplayer-only game brought down by bizarre marketing and monetization decisions. But you know what? I'm damn glad for the hours I got with Evolve, and this game is just as worth experiencing while you can.

Wildgate starts off strong. The tutorial is easy to follow and gets you up to speed without overwhelming you, which is a nice change of pace. Once you’re in, the real fun begins—especially if you’re playing with friends. The game has some genuinely cool mechanics, and the match length feels really well-balanced. It’s long enough to feel meaningful but short enough to keep things exciting. That said, the teleportation system needs serious work. It’s just way too forgiving. Being able to teleport mid-combat or while on an enemy ship makes things feel chaotic in a bad way. Almost every fight I’ve been in has ended up being dominated by boarding actions rather than ship-to-ship combat. The actual ship weapons end up feeling secondary. At one point, someone boarded my ship, stole a gun, and instantly teleported back to their own ship to use it against us. Stuff like that just completely breaks the flow of PvP and removes any real consequences for risky plays. There’s a solid game here, and I’ve had a great time with it—but teleporting needs to be rebalanced if it’s going to have staying power.

~35 hours in the open beta Decent game, well worth it if you have at least 2 or more friends to play with Do NOT buy if you are solo, maybe even duo.* Game requires a lot of teamwork and good communication Most unfun experience queuing up into a game with randoms, almost on par with being a solo with a 4stack squad in CS or league of legends *opinion may change if game gets a healthy enough population for skill-based matchmaking to do anything, which definitely did not exist for the beta

Played a bunch in beta, and it seems to have only gotten better since. Quick summary. Ship fights are really immersive and dynamic, especially if everyone's on comms and you're duking it out with several at once. Weirdly, the verticality and openness of space makes this pretty different than SoT, for example. Cool characters with unique abilities, but none seem so meta that you can't play what you want. Satisfying gunplay and movement mechs. Beautiful art. Cool devs and growing community. Worth picking up imo.

I played approximately 161 hours of Wildgate in pre-launch playtests. To sum it up quickly, Wildgate reminds me of the times when FPS games felt almost magical and interesting and a bit quirky, and not a constant struggle against a matchmaker for ranked points, with preset and overdone strategies, et cetera et cetera. Give it a try.
