March 2026
The worst part about this game is that its actually pretty fun. Bungie seems to be channeling more into providing something closer to Tarkov than Arc Raiders. Marathon makes a lot of choices that Arc Raiders deliberately did not make because they wanted a more casual audience, but this choice means that the game itself is only ever going to be for a certain type of person; a niche within a niche. Was Arc Raiders too easy for you? Was Tarkov too hardcore? This is undeniably a much more midcore experience in terms of difficulty as the PvE is incredibly challenging and in your face, and the TTK is low when it comes to PvP. This is also evident with stuff like sponsored kits, which are typically free loadouts, ontop of the Rook (Scav from Tarkov) shell and being able to self revive with an item in both squads and solos. The progression so far seems really good, with you doing contracts/quests for different megacorps who also offer substantial upgrades you can purchase with ingame currency and sometimes items. They also offer pretty nice bartering systems for equipment that make it worth trying to keep an eye out for certain pieces of loot to trade in. Overall, I'd say the gameplay loop is a lot more thought out than I anticipated. The real problem with this game is that it REALLY isn't for everyone. Sony spent a lot of money on acquiring Bungie and it only seems the company has gotten into more trouble since then. Their flagship title (Destiny 2) is deader than ever and they've delayed the incoming expansion presumably to go all in on Marathon. But this game isn't going to pull Arc Raiders numbers anytime soon. The general lack of extraction shooters means this game has the opportunity to find an audience and cater to it, but would that be enough for Bungie and Sony? Does 3.6 billion get spent in acquiring a studio, dealing with controversy, delaying products, etc just to put out a game that had less numbers than the server slam on launch? The game is fun and the loop is plenty engaging but the expectations of both Bungie and Sony are ultimately going to determine the path this game takes in a big way. I will continue to play, but should you choose to play yourself, be aware of the possible risk that comes with live-service games these days. We are still hot off the heels of failures like Concord and now Highguard. No game is immune to this. Addendum, as of March 30th, 2026 Conversation around this game online has gotten awfully muddled by obvious trolls and baiting. "If this game is so good, why is hemorrhaging players?" Well, the answer to that is that its very difficult . If there is one thing I took away post Cryo Archive, this game is not for people who don't play a lot of shooters and it definitely isn't for solo players. The solo experience is workable and I find myself using it for certain contracts, but I either play with friends or crew fill trios in most cases. Maps like Dire Marsh are ridiculous and spawn memorization has started to become a problem. It doesn't happen a ton, but it does happen and it means that the spawning system needs a rework of some sort. The onboarding for less experienced players could stand to be better, but I'm not a developer and I don't wanna spitball stupid ideas. All that being said, I still recommend this game , and you might find that the rough edges of the PvP has its own appeal for you even if you aren't a hardcore player, so long as you are willing to die a lot and learn from your mistakes.

I was wrong. I wanted to be a hater but this game is excellent so far. They struck a nice balance between the pvp focus of Hunt and the arcane, questing, stash simulator that is Tarkov. It really scratches the itch for me.

Good so far. Don't ♥♥♥♥ it up, Bungie. And keep whoever handles seasonal content models for D2 as far from this game as possible.

Fun af, but honestly a hard one to recommend. The hook for the game takes longer than the 2 hour Steam Refund window, so it's difficult to tell someone to invest $40 into such a niche genre. Without a doubt though, this is the most fun I've had with an extraction shooter ever. It feels more like a action rogue-like than an extraction shooter to me, with how frequent I get loot. Even if I die terribly in one run the next could give me my previous loadout and more. I haven't felt the urge to play a multiplayer game without my friends jumping into it first in a very long time. 10/10, really nothing else like it once you play it.

solo queue is basically a horror game, just play with no expectations and you'll be surprised just how addicting it gets once you get the ball rolling.
