Dec. 2025
As not to bury the lead too much, I'll start with the most important thing before going into the review proper: Windswept absolutely nails its level design. You don't see platformers popping up so much, partly because they were done to death several decades ago, but also because designing levels in them is actually kind of difficult when compared to similar gametypes - Metroidvanias for instance can get away with lots of lacklustre level design as long as the combat is fun and you just shove a bunch of weird enemies into an otherwise empty hallway, but the pure platformer vibes of Windswept make that an impossibility. It is more-or-less ripping off the entire Donkey Kong Country franchise, and with DKC2 being one of my favourite games of all time (and perhaps the best platformer on the SNES) it was fighting an uphill battle to win my affections, yet it did so all the same. The charm of a non-distinct duck and turtle duo with adorable sound effects is not enough to melt my monster heart despite how genuinely cute the game can manage to be, and barrel mazes within bramble thickets dodging bees and blue dragonflies may tug upon my nostalgia strings, it isn't enough for me to recommend the game, no matter how good it looks wearing the skin of a 30 year old franchise. The music is fine, but only has a couple of standout tracks, the graphics are perfectly serviceable, and the boss fights are... certainly present in the game; Things that would usually get me sneering. Still, these really are the only problems I can truly get hissy about, because playing the game is an absolute blast all round. It has this rule that runs consistent through pretty much the entire game where - as long as you haven't jumped yet - you can perform any grounded action regardless of whether or not you're on the ground. DKC had a similar thing where you could cartwheel off a ledge and then jump out of the pit you're heading down, but it was a really niche mechanic with few practical uses. Windswept gives it a ton of use even in its earlier stages, before the challenging later levels rock up and it becomes the star of the show, and this combined with the greater depth of the two characters' movesets makes for a challenging experience that never really gets stale. When taking into consideration all of the collectibles, the secret areas and bonus stages, and the potential for coinless/pacifist runs, every level becomes this unique, multi-faceted puzzle that gives you only the barest indication of the simplest way to play it, before letting you loose with a flying turtle to figure it out for yourself: I love games that have enough confidence in their level design to allow that freedom. The difficulty curve is fine, even for someone like me who prefers their games on the harder side. It's not like Windswept is slouching in its post-game secret levels, where it starts flinging sawblades everywhere and making you switch character mid-air multiple times. The final EX stage in particular is an absolute beast and I highly recommend going through the effort to get there. I think part of why it all works so well is through use of the same old design ethos of those earlier 90s platformers, where each stage is themed around one particular gimmick: be it an enemy, hazard, or means of traversal, and then the entire rest of the level is built around all the unique ways that the gimmick can be used before moving onto the next. It only brings it back later piecemeal, and combines it with other gimmicks to make uniquely challenging sequences. By following a tried and true formula, WeatherFell has both reached and exceeded the games it lovingly apes (pun) and all of you should buy it immediately. If you love 90s platformers, you'll most likely enjoy this. If you've never played one, then this is as good a start as any - It's unlikely to ever feel dated regardless of the decade. If it doesn't hit you immediately and you don't get it the first time around, I'd say it's worth trying again. There's gold in here.

I won't give this game a negative review because I'm willing to believe I'm not the target audience for this game, but I don't like this game. The core of this game is great. I just really don't like the level design and how annoyingly punishing it is. The final level of world two really sored me on the whole game. It was more annoying than fun and it feels like the level is filled with beginner's traps. Good luck to Weatherfell in future games.

Windswept! For 2D platformer fans especially the Donkey Kong Country series, GET THIS GAME ASAP and support the incredibly talented team who made it! I haven't finished the game yet, but so far this is just so wonderfully cute and charming! It is a very polished and fun game with responsive controls, lovely pixel visuals and animations, and a lighthearted and occasionally atmospheric soundtrack, and all of these elements of the game combined are obviously hugely inspired by the Donkey Kong Country SNES trilogy. Again, if you are a fan of the SNES era DKC trilogy, I cannot highly recommend this game enough, as I believe in my humble opinion that it is a true spiritual successor to the classic games. The team at Weatherfell did a phenomenal job making this game the best and most polished it could be. There's a demo for you to try out as well!

First impressions are putting this into a Celeste-tier platformer for me (Celeste is top 3 of all time for me) so I think it’s pretty good. There seems to be a lot of tech to learn and the difficulty is present in the challenge levels. I can tell the game will push to the depths of its mechanics later on.
