X-Blades, developed by Gaijin Entertainment and published by TopWare Interactive, is a fast-paced hack-and-slash adventure that embraces the energy and excess of late-2000s action games. It stars Ayumi, a confident and impulsive treasure hunter armed with twin gunblades, who finds herself entangled in an ancient curse after seeking out a legendary artifact. The story begins as a classic quest for fortune but quickly spirals into a struggle between light and darkness, forcing Ayumi to confront mystical forces far beyond her control. It’s a familiar fantasy setup, but one told through a colorful and stylized lens that reflects the game’s anime-inspired roots. Rather than relying on deep character writing or intricate storytelling, X-Blades leans heavily on visual spectacle, kinetic combat, and a sense of unrelenting momentum that defines its entire experience. At its core, X-Blades is about constant motion and flashy combat. Each stage throws hordes of enemies at the player, ranging from demonic beasts to monstrous constructs, and the goal is usually simple—defeat everything that moves and move on. Ayumi’s dual blades can switch seamlessly between melee and ranged attacks, allowing for both close-quarters slashing and stylish shooting combos. The system encourages chaining attacks together for high scores and more powerful magic, creating an almost arcade-like rhythm where efficiency and aggression are rewarded. As you progress, you collect souls that function as both currency and experience, which can be used to unlock new skills and spells. These magical abilities add variety to combat, letting you unleash elemental attacks, summon energy blasts, or briefly empower Ayumi’s blades with devastating effects. The fluidity of switching between swordplay, gunfire, and magic gives combat a satisfying flow, especially when facing large waves of enemies that fill the screen with chaos. Visually, X-Blades makes a strong impression with its bright color palette and elaborate art direction. The environments—ancient ruins, sunlit temples, shadowy catacombs—are expansive and filled with glowing architecture that suits the game’s mythical tone. The cel-shaded character models and exaggerated animations complement its anime aesthetic, giving it a distinctive look that separates it from the more realistic action games of its time. Ayumi herself is the focal point of the visual design: energetic, stylized, and designed to stand out, both for her combat agility and for the obvious fanservice built into her appearance. The presentation aims for spectacle, not subtlety, and while it succeeds in creating a visually striking world, it can sometimes feel repetitive as later levels reuse similar structures and textures. The soundtrack matches the high-energy tone, with orchestral and electronic themes that rise and fall with the intensity of battle, enhancing the game’s sense of flow and motion. Despite its visual flair, X-Blades struggles with repetition. The combat, though flashy, doesn’t evolve significantly as the game progresses. Most encounters rely on the same formula: destroy enemy generators, wipe out waves of foes, collect the spoils, and move forward. While the magic system offers a wide range of powers, many of them feel redundant, and the limited enemy variety means you’ll often rely on the same handful of strategies. The bosses are designed to provide moments of scale and tension, but they often feel drawn out and lack the mechanical complexity that could make them memorable. The camera can also be a persistent annoyance, occasionally losing track of enemies during chaotic battles or obstructing the view in confined areas. These issues don’t ruin the experience but highlight the game’s focus on style over refinement. It’s a spectacle-driven experience that values adrenaline and speed more than precision or variety. Narratively, X-Blades keeps things simple. The story revolves around Ayumi’s struggle to overcome the darkness that infects her after touching the forbidden artifact. Along the way, she discovers the truth about the curse and the fate of the world she has inadvertently endangered. The plot is presented through brief cutscenes and narration, offering just enough to connect the action sequences without bogging the player down with exposition. Ayumi herself is more of an archetype than a complex protagonist—brash, fearless, and somewhat naive, acting as a vessel for the game’s over-the-top energy rather than a deeply developed character. While her personality suits the game’s pulpy tone, the lack of emotional depth means the story serves mostly as a backdrop to the combat and exploration. Still, there’s a certain charm in its simplicity; it’s the kind of unapologetic, straightforward adventure that thrives on enthusiasm rather than sophistication. Technically, the game runs smoothly and remains easy to access even on modern systems thanks to its modest requirements. Its control scheme is intuitive, with quick inputs for switching between attacks and spells, though the targeting system can feel imprecise in crowded encounters. The upgrade and progression system is straightforward, making it easy for players to experiment with different abilities without being overwhelmed by complex menus or branching skill trees. That accessibility is one of X-Blades’ enduring strengths—it’s designed to be picked up and enjoyed in short bursts, delivering immediate action without demanding mastery. However, this same accessibility limits its long-term depth, as veterans of the genre may find the mechanics too shallow to sustain engagement beyond the first playthrough. In the end, X-Blades is a relic of its time—a game built on the promise of pure, unfiltered action and eye-catching design rather than nuanced storytelling or innovative mechanics. It’s loud, colorful, and confident in its identity, even when that identity borders on camp. While its repetition and lack of depth prevent it from standing among the genre’s best, it succeeds as a fun, fast-paced experience for players who appreciate simple, stylish combat and a dose of nostalgic flair. Ayumi’s journey through temples and tombs might not offer much in the way of surprises, but the game’s enthusiasm for its own world and mechanics gives it a charm that lingers. For fans of hack-and-slash games who value spectacle over substance, X-Blades remains an energetic, if imperfect, adventure worth revisiting. Rating: 6/10

I played this back when it could be found on Xbox 360. I enjoyed it back then however I will admit that the fighting is lacking in some areas but if you really try hard and learn to use the spells in mid-air you can run through the pro difficulty barely using the healing pause menu option. I played through it twice scoring both endings and I would recommend it to anyone that wants a simple story with no side quest to get in the way.
