YAPYAP I feel has drawn some unfair criticism from people who have put less than three hours into playing it, and assumed they've seen everything there is to see. I don't want to imply that the game's perfect, or that it can't feel a little underwhelming at first, but many of the critiques in these negative reviews just... don't hold up, in my opinion. TLDR at the bottom. So first; "there's only one map!". Yeah, okay, I guess technically - it's not procedurally generated, and there are a limited number of room types - however even after ~12 hours I do keep encountering new rooms and puzzles. While the spawn rooms themselves lack variety, the time you spend in them represents maybe 1% of your game time, so I sort of... don't care? They're a spawn room, imagine making the same complaint about REPO or Lethal Company. Secondly, there are (from my knowledge alone) 8 different standard wands, each with 3 normal spells (and often with extra semi-hidden spells) as well as a ninth hidden wand with only one spell. That's a total of 25 spells across 9 wands, not including the hidden spells. That's a fair number in my opinion. On top of this, each wand after the Wand Of Winds (your default, free wand) has its own ways of interacting with the central mechanic of destroying items, avoiding/attacking enemies, and solving puzzles. The Wand of Fire is helpful if you get a room full of burnables; the Wand of Telekinesis is fantastic at destroying large objects; the Astral Wand can help you reach locations that are normally blocked off. And so on. Which brings us to the central mechanic itself, "causing chaos" - except, it *isn't really*. The central mechanic is actually a race against the clock. Destroy enough items, defeat enough enemies, collect enough gold/potions/ingredients, and *don't die*. Causing chaos is your "quota", sure, but once you start to get the hang of it the quota itself becomes increasingly less relevant - it's about being equipped enough to *survive*. The variety in different enemies is, again, perhaps not as large as some people would want, however I feel as though all of the enemies are thematically consistent, offer relatively unique ways of engaging with each one mechanically, and avoid having any that are just sort of... Unavoidable deaths? As long as you're creative with your approach, and try new things, most of the enemies reveal themselves to have different strengths, weaknesses, behaviours, etc. It keeps things fresh without there being an overwhelming variety of enemy types, and you can't just use the same method every time. All of this to not touch on the puzzles, the brewing mechanics, or the various methods for generating gold. But trust me when I say, if people are complaining about having no money, it's *fully* a skill issue. Lastly is the claim that YAPYAP feels like an Early Access title, and... maybe this is my personal bias here, but I'm actually really relieved to see a game that isn't hiding behind a wall of text explaining how "oh we're not quite done yet, but pay full price and we'll release the game at some point, we pinky promise!!" YAPYAP has released as a full game, and honestly it feels pretty well rounded to me. No indie dev is expecting to sell half a million copies in seven days, and I'm not unhappy with everything there is in the game for the <£10 I paid. If it never received another content update, I think it'd be a pretty solid experience. TLDR: YAPYAP is a surprisingly involved addition to the friendslop genre, with a slightly steeper than average learning curve that seems to have put off players unwilling to give it a few hours of their time. While the design of the tower can be repetitive, the actual variety in items, mechanics, enemies, and rooms has meant I'm still discovering new things ~12 hours in. If you're looking for a game like Lethal Company or REPO that inverts the "collect stuff" mechanic into a "destroy stuff" one, I'd definitely recommend giving this one a go.

I was worried when I saw this game releasing just a few months after the demo. ADD MORE WANDS ADD MORE MAPS ADD MORE PROGRESSION. (The permanent (for the current run) health, stamina and cooldown potions are nice, but maybe offer an in game way to unlock some cosmetics, passives or unique actives or something, to provide more desire to play again after you eventually lose a run. ADD MORE ENEMIES (I appreciate that there's more ways to deal with enemies upon release, compared to the demo, but adding more enemies and adding more ways to mess with them would be great.) AN ENDING? (Not sure if there is one yet but offering players a way to sort of wrap up the run after progressing far enough is a satisfying way to finish a game session. Let them go endless as well if they want. Going until you can't go anymore, all the time, with no permanent progression, gets mind numbing and dull.) It's fun and worth the price if you've got some buds to play with for a few sessions, but more areas to explore and more wands to mess with would go a long way. I'm not sure if the time limit is necessary. Maybe just steadily make it more dangerous as the time goes on? I didn't struggle too hard with finding the exit when I was playing with 1 friend. Together (and with the help of going into the outdoor areas, and the flight potion, it makes finding the extraction not too bad.) I still would appreciate if it was a little easier to find the exit, or at least didnt have too much time pressure to find it. Make the entire EXTRACTION tower okay to leave from. Not just the tiny circle that shows up when you click the button. I think it used to be that way in the demo? People are going to mess around and joke about as they try to leave. Losing all your items and taking a quota penalty for being slightly out of the circle or slightly above it because of a spell, is dumb and punishes the goofy nature of this game. This paired with how loose the voice activation spells are make it very easy to accidentally get out of the circle during the 10 second extraction window. Fun game. A lot of potential. Needs more content to turn this into a top notch title to play with your friends.
