A worthy addition to the emerging 'gothic-like' class of games. This is not a huge AAA project, but a comfortable, compact well-put-together experience. Combined with a very pleasing retelling of slavic myths, it's definitely worth the asking price.

YAR: Forgotten Throne, developed and published by Honor Games, is a distinctly old-school open-world RPG that feels like it was built with a deep admiration for early 2000s European role-playing design. Rather than chasing modern trends of streamlined systems and constant guidance, it leans into a slower, more deliberate structure where exploration, decision-making, and immersion take center stage. The result is a game that may not immediately impress with technical spectacle, but gradually reveals a layered and rewarding experience for players willing to meet it on its own terms. The setting plays a major role in defining the game’s identity. Drawing heavily from Slavic folklore, the world feels steeped in myth and cultural texture, offering encounters with eerie forests, forgotten ruins, and legendary figures that give the environment a sense of authenticity and mystery. Instead of overwhelming players with a massive but empty map, the game opts for a more curated world filled with meaningful locations and secrets. There is a satisfying rhythm to exploration, where venturing off the main path often leads to unexpected discoveries, whether it’s a hidden quest, a rare item, or a story fragment that enriches the broader narrative. The story itself follows a familiar framework of political tension and ancient forces, but it distinguishes itself through player agency and branching outcomes. Your choices influence not just the direction of the narrative but also your role within the world, allowing you to align with different philosophies or playstyles. Whether you lean toward a martial approach or invest in magical abilities, the game reinforces your decisions through both gameplay mechanics and narrative consequences. While some dialogue and writing can feel uneven—particularly in translation—the overall storytelling succeeds in creating a cohesive and engaging journey, especially in moments where moral ambiguity comes into play. Combat and progression systems reflect the same ambition seen throughout the game. Players can experiment with melee combat, ranged attacks, and magic, each offering viable paths with their own strengths and limitations. The mechanics themselves are functional rather than groundbreaking, occasionally lacking the fluidity of more polished titles, but they are supported by a robust progression system that encourages specialization. Beyond combat, the inclusion of crafting professions like alchemy, blacksmithing, and cooking adds meaningful depth, allowing players to shape their experience in ways that go beyond simple stat upgrades. Side activities, including mini-games and skill-based challenges, further enhance the sense of a living world and provide welcome variety. Of course, the game’s scope comes with trade-offs. Technical roughness is noticeable, from stiff animations to occasional interface frustrations, and some systems feel like they reach slightly beyond what the development team could fully refine. These issues can momentarily break immersion, particularly for players accustomed to modern AAA polish. However, what ultimately carries the experience is the clear passion behind the project. There is a sincerity in its design that resonates, making it easy to forgive its imperfections when the core experience is so thoughtfully constructed. In the end, YAR: Forgotten Throne stands as a compelling example of what a dedicated indie team can achieve when prioritizing depth and atmosphere over accessibility and gloss. It’s a game that rewards patience, curiosity, and a willingness to engage with its systems on a deeper level. While it may not appeal to everyone, especially those looking for a fast-paced or highly polished RPG, it offers a rich and memorable journey for players who appreciate traditional role-playing design and culturally inspired storytelling. I picked this up today and I'm having a lot of fun with it. I'm a huge fan of eurojank and this scratches that itch. If you like Gothic or Risen, you'll probably like this.

They speak English on video on steam store but they only speak Russian ingame You have dub titles dough in English.' Other issue i have is that the small mosnters you meet in start can only be taken out with ranged combat as they do 97damage or hp taken each hit.. and you total hp is 100.. so they take you out in 1second if you attemt melee them. So fare its littlebit messy, but i will change it to dumb up with english voices and the combat system are tuned to be more normal early on (talking about first 10min of game here) 4March 2026 Edit: ok now the game have very good english both text and speach... changed to tumb up :) also the monsters are not like 1hit kill on you anymore.
