Few games feel this original without forgetting to be fun Yoku's Island Express surprised me with how naturally it blends pinball, exploration, and light metroidvania progression into one cohesive adventure. I liked that moving across the island always felt playful, because every flipper, bumper, and shortcut turned exploration into part of the core appeal rather than a gimmick. The tropical setting, colorful art, and relaxed tone give it a lot of charm. It is also a fairly easy game overall, and if I wanted a tougher platformer, I could see it feeling a bit too gentle. I enjoyed it because it offered something genuinely different without becoming awkward or overdesigned. For me, it worked best as a cheerful and low pressure adventure that kept rewarding curiosity with new paths, quests, and small surprises. I would still warn that players who dislike pinball physics may not connect with it in the same way. I recommend it to anyone who wants a creative and lighthearted exploration game, but not to someone seeking combat or a serious challenge.

I absolutely love games as unassuming as Yoku’s Island Express. On the surface, it looks like a strictly child-friendly game from a bygone era, but if you give it a fair chance, you’ll discover a small gem hidden among the sea of repetitive, look-alike products flooding the market. Pros: ✅ Believe it or not, this game has a functional open world. It’s not huge, but it’s built around a pleasant system of unlocking regions and then opening up fast travel routes. ✅ The music and sound design are genuinely fantastic. If, like me, you’ve been missing proper island tunes, give Yoku a chance. ✅ Pleasant, colorful, and very clear visual presentation. ✅ An amazing design idea that combines light storytelling with the mechanics of one of the most popular games/toys in the world: pinball. It REALLY works — it’s unusual, different, and genuinely engaging. ✅ The challenges aren’t overly difficult, but they’re not trivial either, which makes them fit perfectly into the formula of a relaxing, feel-good game. ✅ The resource management system is ideally balanced — it makes you feel involved without being irritating or blocking your progression. ✅ Boss fights that are fun and, interestingly enough, distinct from each other despite their similarities. ✅ There’s something inherently sweet about playing as a dung beetle postman. The very idea of a postman works surprisingly well in a game focused on movement. ✅ This game is the definition of a Steam Deck title — it runs beautifully. I honestly do not recommend buying it with keyboard and mouse gameplay in mind. Cons: ❌ Post-ending content is, in my opinion, only for achievement hunters. I didn’t feel like doing it — maybe I’ll come back someday out of boredom, but for now I’d rather play something else. ❌ There are definitely too many important, mandatory dialogues for the game to lack a Polish localization, especially when other languages are supported. I managed just fine, but considering the game’s age and how simple adding subtitles would be, more effort could have been made. A great, cozy, and relaxing game for about 5–7 hours — more if you enjoy maxing out achievements. At a sale price of around 15 PLN, I absolutely think it was worth it, but only if you plan to play on a handheld console or with a controller.

This is a fun, clever Metroidvania that changes things up, but there are a number of quibbles and frustrations that keep it from being top-tier MV in spite of the smart pinball mechanic. I wish there was an upgrade that let you activate a brief burst of slow motion to better line up shots and slingshots, for one, and I generally would have liked to see more/better ways of getting around the island fast. The story, while cute, also seems halfbaked, and the final boss battle doubly so: it was over very quickly and didn't seem to require much in the way of skill, but neither was it easy but cathartic because the antagonist hadn't really been set up much. All in all, this is the kind of game that makes me wish the developers had had a chance at iterating on the first game. Super Yoku's Island Express, anyone?

Criminally underrated metroidvania that undeniably deserves a sequel. The whole pinball thing really makes it one of a kind.

This is a pretty good bug-themed pinball adventure/metroidvania. It's extremely polished and generally very fun to play. Lots of secrets to find, items to collect, and areas to explore. The pinball physics aren't perfect, but the game is designed very well around them. My main complaint is that as you explore the world, backtracking can become increasingly tedious. There is a limited fast-travel system, but I would have liked to see a more fast-paced "pinball-y" way to quickly move around the map on a larger scale. This slow backtracking distracts from a gameplay experience that is otherwise pretty dense and fast-paced. Overall, Yoku's Island Express is a great looking and feeling game with a lot to see and do. A very interesting take on the metroidvania genre.
