Important notice: I ran the game without any single issue on my gaming laptop, but before that, on my desktop PC - something still enough to run it, and equipped with Windows 11 - and on an older laptop with Windows 10, none of the suggested fixes prevented it from crashing after a few minutes. So you may be lucky and manage to play it, or not; a shame that they never seemingly cared about that. With that out of the way, Night Alone certainly knows how to make a shocking first impression in its opening, especially in contrast with the cutesy character and the painted-looking backgrounds. It's a really pretty 2D game, even if less excellent in case of extreme zoom, and most yokai are barely animated, even if at times that exactly enhances their unsettling nature. I love the map and inventory in the style of childish doodles. The gameplay can be effectively described as "survival horror": no offensive abilities and very few resources, most important being coins to offer to Jizo statues so as to slowly build a small network of fast travel points. The horror is very rarely "in your face", but danger is at every corner, as the constant heartbeats signal, even before the spirits are highlighted by the torch. The sound design further enhances the atmosphere, an excellent result given the practical absence of music outside of the ending credits. Avoiding enemies can get more difficult than it should, as not only does the little girl tire fast from running, the stamina is even less if danger is nearby, and some yokai don't make their presence known until they are right in front of her. Aligning correctly with interactable objects can be a chore already; imagine in situations when that must be done quickly. Even with no progress lost in case of death and the ability to return to the safety of the little girl's house at any time, there is often a fine line between fear and tension, and frustration. Couple the above with lots of walking and running around the town, even after activating a sufficient number of Jizo, and you get a distinct impression of padding out the duration of what is quite a short game otherwise, even less if one is not interested in looking for all collectibles (although that can be done even after the main story ending). I wish objects that can be picked up would be presented better than as small twinkles on the ground; even with the question mark appearing when one is nearby, it can be difficult to make them out. Also, there could be some highlight for new entries in the collectibles, as some even use the same icons or similar ones. If you can outrun the monsters when needed, however, the slow pace and sparse nature of Night Alone , both in the "density" of the environments and the narrative, shine at their best. The plot doesn't explain much, and I've read interesting interpretations; I recommend looking up something about the ending, as it's also connected to Japanese traditions and Shinto. And even with nearly every creature of the night trying to kill her, sometimes the little girl shows heartwarming compassion towards them. Not a masterpiece, I hope the following Yomawari games ironed out what works less here, but a fairly fresh take in a sea of too often indistinct horror games. Beware of ignoring it because you think it's just another "anime" styled game.

A masterpiece. I've played it on my switch and this series has become one of my favorites. The first entry is somewhat not on par with the others 2 games in the story departerment but the art and atmosphere are really memorable. One of the best games i've ever played.

Great game!!! Some spirits in this games sometimes makes me feel the heebie-jeebies. The game are very atmospheric. The silentness mix with the sound of the heartbeat everytime I'm near the spirits makes me feel the uneasy. Overall the game has beautiful artstyle, story and soundtrack.
