Great game. Beautiful pixelart, some banging tunes, very unique combat system and some brutally difficult bosses.

I really like this game and honestly can't really explain why. This was my first Ys game, it's old as all hell, some of the bosses are kinda BS and the game has the old school cryptic nature to it... But it's charming, I eventually grew to really enjoy the bump combat, and the soundtrack bops... So yeah. I recommend this game if you plan on getting into the Ys series, play on Easy, prepare to occasionally grind and maybe look up a guide on where to go and dive in, playing this makes the rest of the series that much sweeter.

Ys I & II Chronicles+ — Review Ys I & II Chronicles+ is where it all began — the foundation of everything that makes the Ys series so beloved today. These two games, remade and bundled together by Falcom, are old-school to the core: simple, fast, and full of heart. But even after all these years, they still have that special spark that newer action RPGs often miss — a pure sense of adventure. This collection includes modernized versions of the original Ys I: Ancient Ys Vanished and Ys II: Ancient Ys Vanished – The Final Chapter, rebuilt with improved visuals, remastered music, and smoother controls. It’s the definitive way to experience the origins of Adol Christin’s legend. Story and Setting The story begins with Adol — a young, red-haired adventurer drawn by tales of a mysterious land called Esteria, cut off from the outside world by a supernatural storm. When he arrives, he’s swept into a quest involving ancient goddesses, lost civilizations, and a growing evil threatening to consume the land. Ys I is a straightforward, almost mythic story — simple, heroic, and full of mystery. Ys II continues directly after, expanding the world into the floating land of Ys and deepening the lore behind the goddesses and their ancient power. While the storytelling is minimal by modern standards, there’s a certain sincerity to it. The tone is adventurous and optimistic, and the pacing is tight — no long cutscenes, just quick dialogue, exploration, and action. Gameplay These games are famous (and a little infamous) for their “bump combat” system — you don’t press an attack button. Instead, you damage enemies by running into them off-center. It sounds strange, but it actually creates a rhythm — positioning and timing become key, and battles feel fast and snappy once you get used to it. In Ys II, things open up even more. Adol gains magic abilities, allowing for ranged attacks and more strategic fights, which makes combat feel more dynamic and modern. Both games are all about movement, speed, and risk. You rush through dungeons, make snap decisions in battle, and rely on quick reflexes. The design feels archaic but honest — every victory feels earned, especially during boss fights, which are surprisingly intense for such old-school mechanics. The Chronicles+ version adds quality-of-life improvements: smoother movement, controller support, multiple difficulty settings, and selectable soundtracks (you can even use the classic PC-88 music if you’re nostalgic). Presentation The remastered visuals are charming — simple but colorful 2D sprites over detailed backdrops, with Falcom’s distinctive art style shining through. It’s not flashy, but it feels timeless in its simplicity. The real star, though, is the soundtrack. Falcom’s Sound Team JDK delivers some of their most iconic tracks here — “Feena,” “First Step Towards Wars,” and “Palace of Destruction” are legendary. The remixed and orchestral versions add even more power and emotion, making the whole experience feel grand despite the small scale. What I Liked Classic, fast-paced gameplay that’s still surprisingly fun Gorgeous, remastered soundtrack (one of the best in JRPG history) Simple but heartfelt story and characters Tight pacing — no filler, pure adventure Great modern improvements in the Chronicles+ version What I Didn’t Like The bump combat can feel awkward at first Some dungeons are maze-like and confusing Old-school difficulty spikes, especially in Ys I Storytelling is minimal compared to later entries Final Thoughts Ys I & II Chronicles+ isn’t just a nostalgia trip — it’s a look back at how a series built its soul. It’s fast, sincere, and full of energy. Even with its quirks and simplicity, it captures that feeling of stepping into an unknown land and pushing forward no matter what. These games may be relics of the ‘80s, but in this remastered form, they still feel alive — carried by their brilliant music, brisk pace, and that timeless sense of adventure Falcom has always done best. If you love Ys, this is essential history. If you’re new to the series, it’s a charming and surprisingly exciting place to start — just be patient with the bump combat for the first hour or two. My Score: 8.5/10 Old-school action at its purest — simple, fast, and full of soul.

These two games are... perhaps not THE best (that, for my money, would be the Turbo CD version released back in 1989), but certainly the most modernized and accessible versions of the classics Ys I and II. The reason I enjoy these games so much is their unique action-RPG gameplay... you don't kill enemies by mindlessly whacking your sword at them, but rather by running into them, either off-center or at an angle. Attacking them head on will almost guarantee pain on Adol's end. A fair warning: these games are NOT like modern JRPGs. They don't hold your hand, and even on the Normal difficulty setting, the challenge is pretty brutal. You need to pay attention to the story, item descriptions, NPC dialogue, everything. Some enemies and bosses require special items or tactics, and sometimes it's not blatantly obvious where to go next... although the games aren't HUGE either, so sheer exploration and patience can usually solve that problem... and in fact, meticulous exploration is kinda necessary anyways. And while Ys I has a low level cap of 10 that you'll reach long before it's final boss, Ys II can be a bit on the grindy side at times. But it's all amazingly fun. The unique gameplay mechanics allow for an amazingly tight, well paced experience, and force you to think and act differently from typical action-RPGs. The graphics are a beautiful, charming anime style. And the soundtrack is legendary, composed by geniuses Yuzo Koshiro, Mieko Ishikawa, and Ryo Yonemitsu, and rearranged by Yukihiro Jindo for this particular release. They even give you multiple versions of the soundtrack and art styles to choose from! Go in with an open mind... and let the world of Ys immerse you in it. P.S. Here's hoping we eventually get the PC versions of Ys: Ark of Napishtim and Ys Seven! P. P. S. Also, Origin and Oath in Felghana are amazing too, and Origin in particular is intricately connected to the stories in Ys I and II. Definitely pick those up as well! :D

very fun and charming game. the story is nice, i love the characters. this game has a very unique charm to it. the music is AWESOME, the visuals are cute and nice looking, the combat is also very smooth and fun once you get a feel for it. i recommend capping it at 60fps, at the very least for the final boss, if nowhere else.
