Yes! This is the essense of indie survival horror games. Borrows elements from various classics (mainly RE) and delivers! THe puzzles are relatively easy but require deduction which allows for satisfactory "aha" moments. Combat is basic but suits the game.

An absolute underrated gem that flew WAYYYYY under the radar! Bite-sized survival horror done perfectly. Story is The Thing and gameplay is System Shock. If you don't like either, it probably wont be for you. The only complaint I have is that the sanity meter seems arbitrary. The only thing I noticed it doing is if it dips below 50ish you can see door codes and notes that you normally couldn't see and one instance where you had to have 90 or over to see a lore note. I'm assuming you die if the sanity meter reaches 0 but there is no way you'll reach 0 considering the game spams supplies throughout the 4-5 hour runtime. So even though its a true survival horror game, it's way more puzzle-based than resource management, which I think it works in the games favor. Really enjoyed my time with this one!

6/10; above average unpolished jank on genuine appreciation of the genre. ~5 hours for 1 playthrough (3 endings) I truly enjoyed Zero Protocols aesthetics and gameplay for what they are; it's not trying to oversell you on what it is. It's indie System Shock with references to other horror franchises. You shoot like its 1993, explore the underground lab with a flashlight (including some nice touches such as it being difficult to read notes if the light is off), solve some puzzles. All of which I was absolutely down for. And almost everything else is wasted. 85% of the plot is back-loaded at the end of the experience. The sanity mechanic was basically forgotten about starting with Ch.4. Too resource abundant to justify it being low. Too long to decrease it on purpose. Having it low really only optioned you into extra lore and unnecessary loot rooms. $12 is perfectly fair for this game.

Pros: [*]great atmosphere reminding me of System Shock [*]surprisingly good story and lore [*]pretty cool retro visual style [*]good survival gameplay [*]majority of the puzzles is fun [*]reasonable difficulty [*]the occasional jumpscares are not very scary, which is a good thing Cons: [*]too many cheap ambushes, with enemies appearing out of a thin air [*]healing items are scarce in certain areas [*]those damn spiders are extremely annoying and unfun [*]all of the above forces me to abuse the save system, reloading every time the combat goes wrong So yes, this is a great survival horror game, only the combat could use some rebalancing and tweaks. Recommended!

Zero Protocol - maximum effect. A terrific little horror shooter with non-linear storytelling, clearly inspired by the original System Shock going by its lo-fi graphical style, which is pulled off superbly. You start off exploring small rooms, scavenging medical and weapons supplies, fighting monsters such as zombies and spiders, and going on to solve some really involving puzzles that require thorough exploration of each floor. You can either build a mental picture of the map, or find a navigation terminal on each floor. The game is structured somewhere between linear and freeform. Each floor is kind of like a mini-System Shock map, but progress is often streamlined by the need to keep hunting for keycards or access codes to open up more areas for yourself. This actually works, with steadily building tension as you are never sure of what awaits you on the other side of every door. But once you've opened up the whole map, you can explore any way you like. The guns - a handgun and a shotgun - feel great when they hit, but are not terribly accurate, and you'll probably end up wasting a lot of bullets. You can melee attack if you want, which is risky as a single hit from a monster takes a whole 1 out of every 5 health bars from you. But this varied combat, combined with inventory management, and the ability to shoot locks off gates if you can't find the key, moves this small, ambitious game nearly into immersive sim territory. The story is involving, although I'm guessing I didn't experience all of it as there are some areas or rooms that I wasn't available to access, and I didn't get all of the achievements, which hints at some unexplored territory and some replay value. The game isn't too difficult, with plenty of resources available if you don't rush things. The only major criticism I have is that the main villain, who you encounter late on, isn't nearly as frightening or foreboding as SHODAN, for example. But nevermind, it's only a 5-hour long game, so you'll have plenty of fun while it lasts.
