Personal Rating: Slightly Positive (65%) I sort of can and cannot defend this game it's current state. So, the story is interesting, for sure something into it, and I'm glad that I got more of the Witch gameplay that I wanted from the demo. The gameplay is pretty good and feels great, even given by my hardware limitations at the moment, which gets me into the biggest negative out there. The graphics: Even tho the game looks awesome even in Low Detail, it's horribly optimised to the point of me not being able to reach 40 FPS. I play at 30-40 FPS, and the first boss was fought on 25 FPS. TBH, if optimisation wasn't this bad, this would be a solid 90% rating. I think it's fair for the discount price, but eh? I wouldn't put my soul on recommending 1666: Amsterdam.

This game is more of a Narrative investigation/puzzle game with open world and light combat & rpg mechanics. You spend most of your time using puzzle-movement mechanics to get behind locked doors, rooftops, restricted areas to unlock hints that lead you to key people and items. Which can involve some combat and this gameplay loop ends in a predictable boss battle. Pros: story, visual quality, puzzles can be fun, theme/asthetic is really cool, unique narrative structure, decent voice acting, spells are fun, has stealth mechanics. Cons: Leveling is slow and you dont get to choose skill unlocks, combat kinda sucks, boss fights are lack luster in terms of mechanics and visual design, game appears like an open world but it's much more of a linear game the open world is more like an exploratory vehicle to investigate, can be slow and boring at times, had a couple crashes but not consistent. The game has a ton of potential though I think a lot of people would be dissapointed in it's current state. For the price not a terrible experience I am enjoying so far but for most people they should wait until completion.

Given I spent the better part of the past two days playing this, I think it has great potential. I love the overall story and main characters, playing as a witch is beyond fun. Though it is extremely rough on the frames and some mechanics are quite clunky, like controlling the cat, as well as the targeting system, and as some others said the combat is a bit repetitive. All-in-all it is just an early access game so it has a lot of room to improve and I do look forward to playing more!!

ENG People buy an unfinished game and then complain that it’s unfinished. On the game’s store page, the developers clearly state that it’s an early access game, that there’s still a lot of work ahead, and that, at this stage, the game is meant for people who are ready to be patient with it and, basically, directly help support its further development. They literally warn you about this. And I bought the game fully aware that I was spending money on an unfinished product, that there would be bugs, that it wouldn’t always run smoothly, etc. So I genuinely don’t understand this flood of negative reviews calling the game unplayable and buggy when the existence of a whole bunch of issues should have been obvious before buying it. And that’s without even mentioning the fact that plenty of AAA games release - like, fully release, at full price - with most of the problems Amsterdam has right now. So yeah, for everyone who’s still thinking about whether to buy it or not: only buy it if you’re actually READY for the fact that this is still an unfinished product. If you don’t have that understanding and patience, then don’t waste your money and then write yet another negative review. About the game I really like the game’s concept and atmosphere. Early modern Netherlands with witchy stuff is cool and feels at least somewhat fresh in the current gaming space. Noa is a likeable protagonist, and her dynamic with Aaron, the “bataraсe” (I love how the voice actress says it), is pretty cute, especially because of how obviously different they are in terms of personality and background. I think I still haven’t unlocked most of the gameplay features yet (I’ll update this review as I keep playing), but switching between Noa’s two forms, and between her and the cat for exploration, also feels pretty fresh?? Ripping people apart as a cat to take control of their bodies? Hell yeah. Running around rooftops and attics as the cat to unlock doors and bring items back is an interesting mechanic with a lot of potential — and I say potential because, for now, controlling the cat is pretty clunky, and sometimes the unpolished controls just get genuinely exhausting. The combat at the beginning of the game is almost terrible. So far, there’s only one attack button and a dodge. I can see in the settings that other combat options are supposed to become available later, but I still don’t know whether I just haven’t reached them yet in this version of the game or whether they’ll actually be added in future updates. The game often gives you a choice: stealth or combat. Well, as you can probably tell, the combat is kinda meh, but the stealth isn’t problem-free either :) I wish there were options for Noa to crouch or at least move more slowly, because I barely have time to distract the guards before they’ve already spotted me. Vibe ruined, obviously, but whatever, it’s manageable. World exploration. Noa can analyse people and steal bread from their cupboards, peak. From the tutorial, it seems like she’ll also be doing some kind of detective work later on, but in general her main function seems to be walking around, talking to people, searching other people’s houses, and beating people up. Aaron the cat is responsible for the feline senses and opening up inaccessible areas. There are apparently some collectibles in the game too, but I haven’t come across a single one yet. Story. Fantasy???? So far, nothing too interesting - we’re an important witch who has to find a special type of person in order to kill demons inside them or something like that. We’ll see where it goes. Honestly, I’ll put it this way: this is not going to be the next Expedition 33. But it does have the potential to be just a genuinely good game - especially once it’s fully finished - where you can have a fun time. Actually, I keep catching myself thinking that Amsterdam reminds me of A Plague Tale in some ways right now but not so much because of the mechanics as because of the overall vibe. So, my verdict: yeah, I like it. Yeah, I recommend it. Does the game have flaws? Yes. Do I forgive them, considering there are still, like, 3–4 (!!!) updates ahead? Also yes. Are you ready for this kind of experience? That’s up to you.

I’m rooting for this game. Google “Ubisoft tried to kill 1666.” If you’re into boss fights, the little guy took on the big guy for rights to this game, and he won. So the conspiracy theorist in me can’t help but wonder if, behind the scenes, Ubi has helped to fan the flames of what has seemed to be—ironically—a witch hunt against 1666. But I digress. I buy A LOT of EA games with the intention of checking them out for some first impressions, and then setting them aside to cook, with the primary purpose of supporting devs I believe in. But, I prefer to just experience the full and final version. So far, I’ve played for about four hours, seen a lot, made my way through what seems to be the initial chunk of story, and on to content well past the first doozy of a boss fight (more on that below). That said, I know most people who purchase EA games do wish to play through all of the existing content straight away, which is fair. So this is a cautious recommendation, for the niche audience who is perhaps a little more like me: eager to try something new, but genuinely patient and reasonable with their EA expectations. For y’all, here is what I love: - The Rembrandt-inspired painterly atmosphere is worth the price of admission. - You get to pick your black cat companion. I went with Wilding, in honor of our real-life wildlife sanctuary. :) - Music, ambient sounds, and (full!) voice acting are stellar. - Story and lore are really interesting, with touches of humor to lighten what’s heavy material. It feels lovingly handcrafted, like a piece of lost history ripped from the dusty library you’ll visit early in the game. I’m not usually one for time travel stories, but the way this was thought out is really compelling. - Shape-shifting is fun, but also strategic and puzzley, deciding when best to make use of your magical abilities, your cat’s athleticism, and your everyday human appearance to blend into your community. Cat platforming is reminiscent of Stray. :) - While the game is linear, exploration is rewarded (resources, plus a collectibles codex). The world feels lived-in, and there are creepy little things around corners … keep your eyes on the paintings! - Tutorials are easy to digest, and blended seamlessly into the early gameplay. Menus are well-designed to track quests, skills, potions, etc. 3D map is a nice touch. - Performance is mostly okay for me (see below, though) playing on a *handheld.* I’m on my Lenovo LegionGo Go (SteamOS, Z1 Extreme chip) and I’m hovering around 30FPS. (Graphics settings: Low, FSR, FrameGen ON, Balanced upscaling, 30 Motion Blur, VSync OFF). I don’t recommend for the Deck though, as my Legion significantly outperforms my OLED Deck, so I’m assuming that the Z1 Extreme chip is doing ALL of the heavy lifting here. Okay, for those who are hoping to buy and play the 15hrs or so of currently-promised EA content straight away, here are some things to consider: - Performance is rough in some areas, namely, the Hotel, which you’ll encounter early on (and see again). Both framerate and image quality took a nosedive for me anytime I was inside of the Hotel (despite fiddling with every graphics setting, so it’s unique to the Hotel for me so far). The Hotel contains an important piece of the story, so that can be a distraction. - Movement can often feel “sticky,” best as I can describe it. Once I unlocked the ability to move a little more quickly, this quibble mostly dissipated for me. - Coming upon enemies isn’t seamless, but has a lead-in with an awkward screen that seems unnecessary and becomes annoying. - Combat areas can be bugged. For instance, while working my way through an outpost, I cleared the area, but rather than moving straight on and out, I took a couple steps backward to gather loot. This triggered a duplicate round of combat that I had to complete again. - Combat is rather basic, but pretty easy (ahem… see next point), though you can make use of your environment to explode things, causing massive damage to groups of enemies nearby, which is quite fun. Those who are here primarily to experience the story will appreciate this (like me), while others may hope for something more interesting or challenging. - The difficulty spike on the first boss fight was insane. As someone with 250+hrs in Elden Ring (across various consoles), I didn’t see that coming, died a lot of times, and nearly rage-quit. Otherwise, this seems to me to be a game that aims to be methodical. Minimal fast-action combat, no running through the streets like an unhinged assassin. It feels intentionally slower-paced, like it’s gently nudging you away from frantic gameplay, and into something somewhat meditative. I like this unusual design choice, but not everyone will enjoy it. I recommend 1666 for people wanting to experience something unique for spooky season, people who prioritize story and vibes over combat, people who are genuinely patient with EA games, and also for people who want to support an indie dev who took on the Goliath Ubisoft … and won. :)
