There are so many reviews of this game that there is little I can add. Suffice it to say that South of Midnight is one of the best games I've played in quite some time. It is drop-dead gorgeous with amazing scenery, an incredible sound track, interesting characters, and a story that will touch your heart. It has some fun mechanics... gliding, jumping, grappling, casting spells, etc. It is also a difficult game for those who lack finesse in platforming and combat. There are multiple chase scenes which require fast reactions to changing terrain and four boss battles. Luckily, Compulsion Games provides options for those of us who are challenged in these areas. There is a 'story' mode which makes the game much easier. You can also choose to skip specific combat scenes, chase sequences, and boss battles. The game auto-saves on exit. South of Midnight has a host of collectibles. Some are used to upgrade your skills so it is worth the effort to retrieve as many items as possible. In addition, much of the lore is told through the notes you find. For missed collectibles, you can return to replay any chapter at any time. I played in Story Mode and skipped a couple of chase scenes. As a result, I was able to finish the game and enjoy the whole story. My hat is off to those who excel in action games. Since I am not in that group, I really appreciate this development team's efforts to make South of Midnight accessible to all. I highly recommend this magical experience!

I would recommend this game with a caveat: this is a highly narrative game and feels almost like playing a movie. It's a gorgeous game with beautiful visuals, music, and characters. For the price, it is a short game, so keep in mind that you're paying for the labour behind the art and the music rather than complex gameplay. The story is fairly straightforward, nothing too complex, but if you like fairy tales and big beautiful creatures, then this is for you!

Story and setting are great, although the combat can get repetitive.

This is genuinely the most conflicted I have been in reviewing a game. I have decided it's a recommendation, but it's a recommendation with some caveats. First of all, I hate to say it, but unless this is on a good sale, I don't think it's worth it. I played the whole game through in about ten hours, and while I spent 3/4 of the game hunting down every optional side "floof" that I could, I ended up skipping the optional stuff and even the boss fights towards the end of the game. Forty dollars for about ten hours is not worth it to me, and I had so many issues with the core gameplay of this game that I do not want to go back and replay it for more achievements. First, the positives. Holy cow, the music. The art style, the color palettes, the voice acting. The art of this game is so genuinely beautiful and breathtaking. The story was great, the script tight. I NEED more games in this kind of setting, with deep south myths and realistic people. I love that the protagonist is black, and black culture runs deep throughout this game. It is badly needed diversity. The sorrow of slavery and the stories of all these people's pain hit me hard. It's emotional and it makes you feel so connected to the world of the game and the people in it. That is why it grieves me that the core gameplay of this game was so absolutely JANK. First of all, I have a pretty decent computer and GPU, but I was SUFFERING in this game. I spent an hour at the beginning trying to get it to run somewhat decently, and finally after tweaking, got it to work. But I kept having issues throughout the game. When I defeated haints, flowers would grow in the air and not in the actual ground. Places that would look accessible would have invisible walls that I would get hung up on and have to finagle my way out of. The game encourages you to not follow the guiding strands that lead you to the main story beats in order to find "floofs" to upgrade your abilities, but when you do so, a lot of times you end up hitting pockets of corruption in the wrong order for the main story quests, leading me to a lot of confusion as to what was happening when. And do not get me STARTED on combat. Running, jumping, and sprinting already feel weird (I had to turn my mouse sensitivity up to almost 200% to get it to behave somewhat normally) but then when you add the strange targeting system and camera jank into it, I died so many times in ways that were incredibly unfair because I couldn't dodge out of a space or away from a monster because the targeting just wouldn't let me. There was so much potential for good combat here, but it just feels clunky and awkward. I think the takeaway is, more games like this please. It's clear that so much love was poured into this. Just... maybe a little more time in the oven to fix bugs and smooth over things like combat?

This game was overall really good! There was a lot to really love about this game, and it's definitely worth a play. The parts of this game that are good, are REALLY good. The story, the atmosphere, the music. All of it is a love letter to the South and it's folklore that really hasn't shown up in a video game like this before. The way the music builds up through out a level is super fun. The game rewards you for stepping off the beaten path. Exploring the areas was fun, and there were some fun puzzles to solve through the various levels. The mechanics of moving and exploring did feel good and provided some fun challenges. It is linear and can get a little repetitive, but doesn't overstay its welcome. The story lines and cutscenes felt good and were often very emotional. The lore is interesting and well thought out. The parts of this game that aren't very good, end up being pretty bad. It's mostly the combat. The combat is in my opinion, clunky and annoying. It feels a little like the combat in DragonAge: The Veilguard which I personally hated but I know a lot of other people liked. I think the biggest problem I have is the combat feels like filler. It feels like the team didn't know what else to do with the time and space that combat took up in this game and so this is what we ended up with. The combats are generic and unrelated to the story line with the exception of a few boss battles. With such a story and lore rich game, I really would have liked the story telling to more seamlessly blend with the combat, instead of just feeling like I suddenly stepped into an arena hidden in the bayou for... what reason exactly? I'm not sure. It just feels like wasted potential on this front. Overall, the game was very fun and absolutely worth a play through. Enjoy the story, have fun looking through the amazing environments and finding all the little bits of hidden lore scattered throughout the world. Turn the difficulty to the easiest setting for combat and get it done as fast as possible because there is nothing really interesting going on there.
