198X is a cute little narrative game with impeccable 80s vibes conveyed through the synth sound design and the outstanding pixel art. The game features a collection of mini games that you would expect to find in an Arcade during the period this game takes place in. Those mini games come from a variety of different genres - there's a dungeon crawler, a beat 'em up, a racing game and more. I definitely enjoyed the diversity of genres and each game had something in store for me. Depending on your preference in gaming, some mini games may click with you more than others though, so your milage may vary. The main plot of 198X is not really anything to write home about. It's a very traditional coming-of-age kind-of deal with all the typical themes and questions attached to that. It's not really all that interesting in my opinion and that's one of the main reasons why this game didn't really stick with me all that long. Nonetheless, if you have an afternoon to spare and want to spend some time in a nostalgic 80s environment while playing some banger arcade games, you can't go wrong with this one.

This game is a love letter to the 80's gaming with a touching story. Well worth the $10 and 2 hours.

This is a collection of 5 short games, connected together by a story that's honestly pretty boring, with some really cringy dialogue and it doesn't even have an ending (and probably never will). The games themselves are pretty fun with some great visuals and music, but it only takes about an hour to beat the whole thing, so I'd definitely wait for a sale before getting it.

This is an absolute must-play for anyone who enjoys indy retro games! My only complaint about this game is that there was not more of it. I am hopeful for the sequels, mainly to expand on some of the enigmatic story elements that were hinted at. I am not sure if I would want to see more of the same mini-games presented here or new ones in the sequel, but I love what is presented so far, especially what seems to be a positive message about video games as therapy. Kudos, Hi-Bit Studios: if you ever come out with something new, its going in my library!
