March 2026
3089 -- Futuristic Action RPG, developed and published by Phr00t’s Software, is an experimental sandbox RPG that pushes the ideas introduced in its predecessor into a broader and more ambitious direction. Set on the alien world of Xax, the game casts players as an android navigating a procedurally generated environment filled with factions, missions, and evolving objectives. Rather than following a traditional narrative-driven structure, it leans heavily into systems and player freedom, creating an experience that feels more like a simulation of possibilities than a guided adventure. The most defining aspect of the game is its fully procedural design. Nearly everything within the world—terrain, cities, enemies, and quests—is generated dynamically, resulting in a landscape that constantly shifts with each playthrough. This approach gives the game a sense of scale and unpredictability that is difficult to replicate in more structured titles. Exploration becomes an open-ended activity, where players are encouraged to move across vast, often surreal environments without a strict sense of direction. However, while this procedural generation provides variety, it also comes at the cost of cohesion. Locations can feel disconnected or lacking in identity, making the world seem more functional than immersive. Gameplay blends first-person shooting with RPG progression, allowing players to approach the experience in a variety of ways. Instead of a traditional leveling system, the game uses a flexible skill point system that lets players invest in different abilities, shaping their playstyle over time. Whether focusing on combat, mobility, or support skills, players have the freedom to experiment and adapt. Equipment and weapons are modular, often generated with randomized attributes, which adds a layer of customization and encourages constant upgrades. While this system offers variety, the differences between items can sometimes feel incremental, making progression more about numerical improvement than meaningful change. Combat introduces a mix of firearms, melee options, and special abilities that add mobility and tactical depth. Tools such as grappling hooks, teleportation, and cloaking allow players to approach encounters creatively, whether by engaging directly or avoiding confrontation altogether. These mechanics can lead to dynamic and sometimes chaotic moments, especially when navigating the game’s vertical terrain. However, the shooting itself can feel inconsistent, as effectiveness is influenced heavily by character stats rather than pure aiming skill. This can create a disconnect for players expecting a more traditional first-person combat experience, making encounters feel less precise than they might otherwise be. The mission system reinforces the game’s procedural nature, offering a steady stream of objectives generated across the world. These tasks provide structure and rewards, but they often lack narrative depth or distinctiveness. Over time, missions begin to blend together, serving primarily as a means of progression rather than memorable experiences. This repetition is a recurring theme throughout the game, as many of its systems prioritize quantity and variability over handcrafted detail. One of the game’s strengths lies in the breadth of its systems. Beyond combat and exploration, players can recruit allies, pilot vehicles, construct structures, and interact with the environment in a variety of ways. This wide range of mechanics gives the game a sandbox quality, encouraging experimentation and emergent gameplay. However, not all of these systems are equally developed, and some feel more like ideas than fully realized features. This contributes to an overall sense that the game is ambitious but somewhat unfocused. Visually, 3089 adopts a simple polygonal style that supports its procedural generation but lacks refinement. The environments are expansive but often sparse, and character models and animations are basic. While this presentation allows the game to run smoothly across large worlds, it also gives the experience a rough, unfinished feel. At the same time, the abstract nature of the visuals can lend the game a certain charm, reinforcing its identity as an experimental indie project rather than a polished mainstream title. Another notable aspect is the game’s lack of guidance. Players are given minimal direction, which can make the early experience confusing or overwhelming. Systems are not always clearly explained, and objectives can feel vague, requiring players to learn through experimentation. For some, this open-ended approach is part of the appeal, offering a sense of discovery and autonomy. For others, it can lead to frustration and a lack of motivation to continue. Ultimately, 3089 -- Futuristic Action RPG is a game defined by its ambition and willingness to experiment. It offers a unique blend of procedural generation, sandbox mechanics, and RPG systems that create moments of genuine unpredictability and creativity. However, its lack of polish, repetitive structure, and uneven execution prevent it from fully realizing its potential. It is best suited for players who enjoy open-ended experiences and are willing to explore its systems on their own terms, even if those systems are not always fully refined. Rating: 7/10

I like this game but I don't love it as much as 3079 (the first game made by Phr00t in the XX89 series). I liked the graphics of 3079 better as I am more into the almost 8 bit style than this cartoon style. This game has better mechanics than 3079 but not as much charm. This is an overall better looking game with some better and some worse mechanics mixed in. I still think it's a fine game and enjoyed it quite a bit but it's not my favorite of the series. This game has decent graphics, good controls, decent story, and good enemy choice. I think if you like open world shooter with a background story then this will be a good game for you.

Theres so much more to do in this endless game than meets the eye. The nostalgia is an added bonus Only complaint is that co-op is an option in game, but is really tough to actually implement.

This is the definition of Lovable Jank. Booting up the game for the first time is an odd feeling. You are asking yourself, "What is this shallow mess?" Next thing you know, you have been playing it for 5 hours strait. This game has way more depth than you could ever imagine. The only problems is sometimes you can get screwed by the random generation. As I said. Lovable Jank.

A lot to learn but well worth it - just like any good RPG. This is similar to 5089 the sequel. Do missions, shoot things, collect things, deliver things. Upgrade your gear. Lots of fun!
