Developed by inkle, 80 Days is not just a game—it's an interactive literary journey, a choose-your-own-adventure novel wrapped in sleek steampunk style. Inspired by Jules Verne’s classic Around the World in 80 Days, this text-driven adventure sets a new standard for narrative design, branching choices, and sheer replayability. You play as Passepartout, the ever-resourceful valet to the eccentric Englishman Phileas Fogg, tasked with helping your master circumnavigate the globe in—you guessed it—80 days. But unlike Verne’s relatively linear tale, the world of 80 Days is vast, unpredictable, and bursting with possibilities. Each journey can take you through over 170 cities, from the icy ports of St. Petersburg to the deserts of the Middle East, bustling Asian metropolises, or floating cloud cities straight out of dieselpunk dreams. The game’s steampunk twist on 19th-century Earth is equal parts imaginative and grounded, mixing historical facts with mechanical elephants, submersibles, and airships. At its core, 80 Days is a resource and time management game driven by interactive storytelling. You choose your route across the globe, manage money, luggage, and health, and negotiate fares and accommodations. But it’s the narrative depth that elevates everything. Every stop along the journey presents branching storylines—romance, danger, political intrigue, betrayal, or simply quiet moments of human connection. Your choices feel meaningful, affecting not just your route but the tone and outcome of the journey. No two playthroughs are the same, and the game actively encourages replaying to explore new stories. The writing is, in a word, exquisite. It’s rich, witty, and emotionally resonant, with nuanced worldbuilding and diverse characters. It avoids colonial tropes common in 19th-century fiction and instead offers a more inclusive, speculative look at global cultures and politics. The art is minimal—stylish maps, subtle animations, and a clean UI—but it lets the writing shine. The music and ambient sounds shift subtly as you travel, keeping the atmosphere immersive without overstating it. Few games give players this much narrative freedom without overwhelming them. 80 Days balances elegant writing with meaningful choices, making each journey feel personal. You can win the bet in 60 days or fail gloriously in 100, but every story feels worthwhile. It’s also one of the rare mobile-to-PC ports that feels at home on both platforms—intuitive on a touchscreen, but also comfortable with mouse and keyboard. 80 Days is a masterclass in interactive storytelling. It’s literary, accessible, and endlessly replayable. Whether you’re playing it to beat the clock or to get lost in the dozens of micro-stories hidden around the globe, 80 Days proves that games can be as enriching as any book—and maybe more adventurous. One of the most beautifully written and brilliantly designed narrative games ever made. Rating: 9/10

I don't know what I was expecting, but I don't think I was expecting this to become one of my favorite games ever. But it's SO GOOD. It's WAY deeper and more expansive than you initially think. There are over 150 locations you can go to, including ones that would make no sense to travel to if you're just looking for the quickest route, and most places have their own little adventures you can check out, so the replay value is massive. Some of these mini-adventures continue on in different cities, so your choices matter, and sometimes they can even lead to different endings. The game will probably seem hard your first playthrough. I completed my first trip in around 85 days or so. But it gets easier once you get the hang of it and learn which routes will lead to delays, etc. If you play it excessively like me, it does start to get somewhat repetitive at a certain point, but there's so much content, so many side quests, and alteration in the market items that it really takes a long time to feel repetitive. I 100%ed the game and have probably seen most of the content, which I read is over 700k words. The cities are (mostly) based on major cities in the world in 1872, so some have historical names (e.g., Gastown instead of Vancouver, San Pedro instead of Los Angeles). It definitely feels like the devs did their research. Well, there's also a lot of stuff that is obviously not historically accurate, but that's just called creativity. This steampunk 1870s is fascinating and extremely well written, so it always feels smooth and cohesive. Obviously, what really makes this game is the writing. Absolutely brilliant. This may be the first time in my life I've ever thought pretentiousness was a good thing, because it is 100% perfect for the setting. It's consistently interesting and engaging, and sometimes, hilarious. Passepartout is so delightfully weird. Ugh wow I just LOVE THIS GAME. Flaws with the game? Just a few... I definitely would have appreciated save slots. You just get one auto-save slot and that's it. Also, I wish the clock didn't keep running while you're looking at the map. Sometimes routes expire for the day before I have time to click them. You just have to treat that as an additional obstacle, I guess. Anyway, whatever, because the game is perfect.

You can spend hours playing this game and have great adventures if you pace yourself, take it slow and actually read what's on the screen. Whatever you do, don't just rush through the game. It's meant to be enjoyed at a certain pace. Bottom line, this is a very enjoyable adventure game in a charming, almost surreal setting.

Though I have not played too many visual novels, this one was one of the best for me. It didn't feel like a typical visual novel and as far as games go, it was highly polished and designed well. The routes revealed themselves, you're given an inventory that can be valuable in places which introduces a limited economy to help your progress, and you are able to open certain paths that can further the story. It has enough choice that you could replay this several times by choosing a different route each time. It also opens up the possibilities for what a visual novel can do and expands the scope of what a game could be! Interesting stories, worldbuilding, and choices makes this game a great experience. I would recommend a player not to view game reviews or playthroughs and just jump right into it. You don't want spoilers!
