I really enjoyed this one, although I have only completed my first run. Knowing inkle and reading the negative reviews, I was fully prepared for another "missed attempt", another "neat idea ruined by poor design" - but not at all! The "difficulty" and "poor layer readability" only really felt true in the last couple of areas. I must concede that those were definitely poorly designed, often highlighting a path on the overview that turned out not to be a path at all (or maybe requiring a very specific and hard to trigger spot to trigger it?). For the remainder, however, the paths were reasonable and readable, and quite enjoyable to navigate. A minor quip is that the "rhythm sections" occasionally have you run too far off the proper trail. That's how I got "lost" in the last couple of areas. The "time limit" isn't a hard limit and didn't feel stressful to me. Especially knowing that the game is meant to be replayed and so I could focus more about exploring and getting my bearings rather than worry about getting to the finish line as quick as possible. The art is beautiful (especially the variety of weather and lighting) and the music very fitting as well. The writing is also very good, but more flavorful than meaningful, to me - yet it still strikes a chord, emotionally and atmospherically. Really cool, well crafted little game. I look forward to playing another run or two - I don't see myself playing obsessively to map out every path and climb every peak, but I also don't feel like the game has exhausted what it had to show with a single run (although it does feel like I showed the core of it pretty firmly).

A beautiful love song and dedication to Scotland. Really captures the nostalgia and folk music of the Scottish Highlands - makes me feel quite emotional. Would recommend to anyone who loves Scotland, wants to go there, and anyone looking for an emotional, atmospheric, story-strong, occasionally musical time. This game also has replay value, so please don't feel the need to explore EVERYTHING on your first go (unless you want to/are only planning 1 run); subsequent runs are easier because you retain some maps, items, etc. (it only tells you that after your first completed run), the game is literally designed to be replayed. Really, I wish this was more obvious the first time around, but I kind of went in blind. As a completionist, it's very easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer amount of things to discover and paths to take. It can be quite confusing sometimes. This is perhaps my biggest critique of the game - but I'd still recommend it to anyone and recommend that people take it easy and take an organic pace. Do the game at whatever pace and depth lets you enjoy the beautiful Highlands the most, is my recommendation.

It's gonna be one of those short games, 4-5 hours tops, I thought... Well, 30+ hours later, I'm still running up and down the Scottish Highlands and it doesn't seem I'm done yet. I think I've never felt so motivated to finish everything in a game. What's great: The soundtrack and art style, voiceover, relaxing atmosphere, exploration. The fact that you don't get much instructions and have to figure out your way. Getting lost in the hills and trying to find the next shortcut and a place to sleep tonight. Jumping to the rhythms of the wonderful songs. Not so great: Not much, really. Maybe that it's mostly subtitles instead of voice acting. And that you might develop a slight addiction, like me.

I came unprepared. I expected a story-driven, cosy platformer. Instead I got a cosy, yet punishing survival game, but punishing in different ways than you expect. First and foremost, it's an exploration game. I reached the "end" of the game without discovering half of the peaks. Some I saw in the distance, some I have no idea how to get at this moment. The thing is the game is asking you to reach the lighthouse before Beltane. I arrived 6 days late. If it's exploration and challenge you're looking for, you will spend a lot of time in the Scottish Highlands. There are secrets to find, quirky and mysterious characters to meet and nuggets of story to reveal. I'm satisfied with arriving to the lighthouse at all. You can't die in this game, but the weather conditions and the climbs really push you. You need to find places and time to rest and recover and some weather conditions won't let you do that. I experienced a sense of wonder trying to discover the correct paths and shortcuts. Getting lost is easy and I had moment when I thought I will not find the lighthouse. You can see it all by checking that 5% of players reached the lighthouse before Beltane and discovered all peaks. You can't really get bored playing this game, and the musical minigame really improves the dynamics of the whole experience. The climbing is very simplistic, but you have to always be careful not to fall and diminish your precious health and stamina. It's a really cool and visually beautiful game. P.S. 2 hrs is my lack of wi-fi. One run is around 4.
