It's a beautifully made game with a nice story, but that ice cube achievement, damn, I don't want to do that again

So far, Annapurna has never disappointed me. Florence, The Unfinished Swan, If Found, Twelve Minutes, Journey, Donut County, and now A Memoir Blue. A Memoir Blue has gorgeous visuals, a lovely soundtrack, and excellent sound design. As for the story, it nearly drop me a tear. I should mention that there’s not much of a gameplay—just a simple point-and-click game. The story is slow-paced, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It only took about an hour to complete. So I recommend to play it in one sitting. A Memoir Blue taught me about the struggles of a single mother and the profound bond between parents and children. Carries a powerful message about forgiveness, understanding, and the complexities of family relationships.

So... I am a bit divided about this game. I'll try to be more concise than in other games I reviewed. Let's go : - Story : it's the story of a girl who was raised by abusive parents. The father was violent or aggressive, and the mother abducted her and was negligent. I won't say more because it would spoil everything, but mainly, no parent is a good parent in this story, and that's the problem. The main character will try to make sense in all this. - Compatibility : with a ultrawide screen, we got black strips on the right and the left, and when the screen isn't interactive, it's also under and over. It could be interesting to adapt the frame to most screen formats to avoid that waste of screen space. Also, it's made for controller. With keyboard and mouse, keyboard is not useful, and mouse is more precise than controller, but it takes a lot, and I mean a lot of movement to move some things. I have a trackball, but if you have a mouse, you'll have to lift your mouse a lot. - Play time : I finished it in a bit more than one hours, and I think I did it quite extensively. It is possible to finish it in less time than that. - Interactivity : almost none, to be honest. This is more of a story with some interactive bits than a game. I was hoping for a point and click, but all I could do was to move objects to help the main character. Sometimes I felt that my interactions weren't enough, sometimes I felt that my interactions were too much or needless, and sometimes both. (There is a moment all you can do is to give money to buy something, it felt that it was needless AND not enough) - Art : 2D art is great and animation is correct. It isn't very fast or fluid but there is a purpose for that so that's ok. 3D art is sub par though. Every organic parts are very smooth and shiny, and lack precision or definitive identity. (unlike 2D art) And 3D animation isn't great either, and felt off a lot of time, except the swimming and walking underwater which felt clearly heavy. (and there is a reason for that) - Overall : The story is mostly a story I lived IRL, except I'm now way older than the main character. I think there are a lot of missing opportunities here and even though the parallel between water and memory and water and depression is evident, a lot of things could have been used with the oppressive part of water that could have brought light to the inner feeling of the main character. It was used a bit in a specific scene, but after that scene, it could have been used instead of something else. (I stay evasive here to avoid spoilers) or with the said something else. We don't feel too much the oppression nor the sense or urge or of overwhelming, we just spectate it, even when it's supposed to be something that we live through the eyes of the protagonist. I also regret the absence of the father in the equation, who has been discarded even though the whole family is dysfunctional. Using the entire family members to consider the whole system (in a positive or in a negative way) would have helped a lot, especially considering the whole story that unfolds. At the end, I can't recommend this game but I can't say it must be avoided. So the thumb up wins by a stretch here. I think it is avoidable, but people may like this (small) experience.

The fastest a game has ever made me cry. So short, yet so tender, sweet and wholesome. Big recommendation, no doubt about that.
