This isn't quite as flawless an experience as previous games in the series due to some rather naff mini-games (I mean really annoying!), but other than those frustrations (and the typically repetitive music) it's still the same hidden cat goodness that we've come to expect from these devs. Oh, and one additional kvetch is that in absence of visual cues as are found in other similar games to find super "hidden" felines, e.g a cat who only appears if you click on a potted plant that it was hiding in, one finds oneself just clicking on every bloody object in the scene, which doesn't feel like a test of visual intelligence and more like just rote clicking on EVERYTHING. So, definitely recommended if this sort of thing is your bag, but there's some sand in the ointment this time around because of the irritating mini-games and the highly repetitive clicking (not to mention the bland and monotonous background music).

I always had a preference for the other Devcats games given their more fictional nature or I can also mention the arcade version which was a haven for gamers considering the many video game references. With shelter I have come full circle (as I own the entire library) and while it's nice to have everything at your disposal I feel a bit of shame. Shame that I prioritised the other titles over this one, the one that seems to be focusing most on our lives with stray cats. We now have a farm location with the usual task of finding cats. These little kittens are in 2 categories at all times. Most are supposed to be in plain sight while for the other group an interaction is needed e.g. clicking on a drawer, a backpack or a window to make these pets come forward. In other titles the protagonists are often cats (if I understand correctly these are also the real life pets of the developers) but here we have Hannah, a 19-year old girl tasked with taking care of as many cats as possible. We follow a linear path. Hannah always tells us what the next task is which means we have to look for her as a new conversation is needed for additional areas to open up. Extra items to look for include weed or bees - these are objects we don't want there so they disappear. This slightly complicates the searching - cats remain and have their unique highlight. Looking for the last couple (while stalling the use of the hint function) is doable if you look for "empty" spaces but with the aforementioned bees etc. you might not remember what corner you still need to check. I appreciated that the help feature was available for these tasks, too. As we explore, new entries are added in a journal introducing the new characters we meet and also telling us what the FeLV and FIV viruses are. The game culminates in an adoption event which has its own puzzles - these with the arrangement of the cutlery I didn't particularly like. There are different categories where the items belong and if one is placed improperly you get a red X. I understand they wanted to add something additional but I wasn't particularly fond of it. Overall, we have more than a dozen locations and once we are done a dog suddenly appears directing us to the neighbour's place which has been invaded by the cats and it is our job to do some more clicking in 4 more locations (including a secret one). Of all the Devcats titles this seems to be the most heartfelt, the most passionate one. Through Hannah we can really feel what it means having a lifelong goal of rescuing animals. I have so far sheltered 5 cats and I still miss Husi to this day, who one day left and has never returned. The local vet still keeps her poster up at the clinic. As always, this is a neat little HOG with cute drawings and great accompanying soundtrack. Highly recommended for HOG and puzzle fans!

I love Devcats and all their games. I would recommend this game to anyone. The art is adorable, the stories are adorable, and the games help cats and shelters in real life. Overall this game is probably one of the best on the market.

I'm enjoying this game as much as the others in the series. The concept remains the same, look for the cats, do the quests for other objects, progress the story. It's cute and comforting. However, I want to point out a few things about the health issues mentioned: - FIP + FELV + FIV in one single cat is... wow. that's a lot. FIP itself is very rare... - FIP does not happen due to neglect. It's not well understood why a cat develops it. The coronavirus affects about 80% of all cats. FIP is due to a mutation. We know it can affect weaker cats (so FIV+ cats, but also bottle fed kittens, and older cats). If there's a case in a litter, there's a higher chance of more, so there seems to be a genetic predisposition as well. But we don't know why it mutates and it just randomly happens. People whose cats have developed FIP aren't at fault. - the idea that a cat would take medicine "because he's FIV/FELV+" is misleading. If FELV is in an active phase, they may need medicine to help with symptoms. If they caught other things due to their immune system being shot by FIV, they may need meds to treat the other diseases. But as the health notes clearly point out, FIV+ cats can lead a long (and mostly healthy) life, and FELV+ cats can be healthy for a long time too. They don't need meds "just because" they've got those conditions. I feel it's a bit counterproductive to give this impression, as people may be daunted by the costs over a cat's lifetime. They can get expensive as they age, but so can any cat.
