Investigations 1 is unfortunately my least favorite Ace Attorney game and I've finished every game in the series (even the spinoff with Professor Layton!) except Spirit of Justice because I was young and sold my 3DS before I could finish it. The issues with this game mainly stem from the length of some of the cases. Cases 1 and 2 are perfectly fine. Case 3 is only saved by Lang and Kay's introduction. It's mostly uninteresting and gave me flashbacks to Turnabout Big Top in its commitment to dragging on testimonies from characters who cannot help but waste time. The main culprit is extremely boring and seeing his breakdown did not even give me much satisfaction considering how flimsy his motives were and how he wasn't even a character they made you really want to nail. Case 4 is excellent in terms of characterization for Edgeworth and his relationship with Franziska and Gumshoe. But it's far too long for what it accomplishes. Detective Badd was the only new character I really liked in the case. Case 5 suffers from the same issues but had more potential that the main culprit immediately ruined by having "the final testimony" like seven times back to back. It's still good and anyone who likes Ace Attorney will probably enjoy it if for nothing more than seeing more Edgeworth. But all the pain in the first Investigations game is more than repaid in the second game. Investigations 2 is the most consistent game in the entire franchise. It's completely cohesive with no wasted time. And it tells complete character arcs (especially between Edgeworth, Eustace, and Gavelle) that are painstakingly developed with each case. Cases 3 through 5 are a highpoint of the series and I don't remember any stretch of three cases being that good in any of the games. It's not just the case by case quality because the quality is there in many of the Ace Attorney games. It's that they are three cases of insanely high quality that fully connect together and play into the next case. All five cases in Investigations 2 are like this but 3 to 5 are another step up. Overall the first Investigations game is good but is hindered heavily by padding out it's cases. I did enjoy it generally though. Investigations 2 is a high point of the entire franchise and is worth getting to even if you genuinely hated the first game. Highly recommend getting the collection!

If you've heard anything or anyone (most likely from a certain youtuber) speak badly about these games, their characters, their stories, etc. disregard it ENTIRELY and form your own opinions on these two. I was no different, and having played them in the past, I dropped them about halfway through because I lost interest. On replay though, both to completion, I've seen just how good they both are when nothing is excluded, and don't watch and listen to people falsely whining about "ohh, the writing's so bad! this case and it's twists are so stupid!" when they simply REFUSE to read or comprehend what's on screen. TLDR: If you've heard anything negative about these games, disregard them and PLAY THEM FOR YOURSELF. FORM YOUR OWN OPINION. I guarantee you you won't regret it.
