What Mohism does as a detective-em-up is interesting, and it says something that I was compelled to play it all the way through. Ostensibly, it's an Ace Attorney-like evidence collection and contradiction finding game set in the start of Ming Dynasty China, though we're playing a bit fast and loose with historicity here. What really drew me in was the art, animations, and presentation. The characters are all done in this charming Glen Keane-meets-Chinese-ink style. Their posing from sprite to sprite is lovely to look at. I especially enjoyed XIong Antong, a bear-inspired bureaucrat that has a great variety of expressions and a charming shape design to him that made him fun to root against. The backgrounds swoop and sway in the wind, and I was certainly immersed in the setting. The story is well told and the crimes have the requisite number of twists and reversals to keep the moment-to-moment factfinding fresh. At the same time, I do think a little bit of the human element was missing - outside of the first case, I didn't feel all that much real connection to either the investigator(s), the victims, or the culprits. The story could sorely have done with a few more casual segments where you get to know your cast better before the nonsense breaks out. As it stands, I learned about the ongoings of the two sect members you meet in the beginning than your assistant character, your master, and the cast of the last case. What unfortunately drags this game way down is that they seem to have run out of translation budget at the finish line. While the first three chapters and the first 3/4s of the last are pretty decently translated into English, the last fourth feels completely unedited: there's grammatical mistakes, sentences that don't make sense, and occasionally completely untranslated blocks of text. If you're willing to slog through what should be the most emotionally fulfilling part of the game (or skip it entirely), Mohism is worth checking out as an example of what the genre could be in terms of polish and creativity.
