UPDATE: My original review was posted at 9.1 hours in, after Act 1. Having now finished the game...I can only recommend this game more strongly! All of the below still applies. I fell even more in love with the game as I worked through Act 2, to Act 3, to the ending. It was a very rewarding experience, and I'm glad I bought this game. I am very excited to see what else this studio can come up with in this world or with these characters. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Based on some other reviews, I feel like this game has suffered from misplaced expectations. I see a lot of people were expecting Disco Elysium. Like Disco, this is a very narrative-driven and focused game. It's a mystery where the world feels like its own developing character. The other characters - Gia especially - are well-rounded, realistically flawed, and sympathetic people. If you're like me, you'll find yourself using your level-ups to improve your dialogue skills (to unlock more narrative) more often than your combat skills. But unlike Disco, this is more of a classic noir than a neo noir in its feeling. The music, the steely narration of events by the main character - they all remind me of those old black and white gumshoe flicks and pulp novels. That's not to say it's one dimensional by any means either - it's just not Disco Elysium. And that's not a bad thing! Aether & Iron is it's own, also good, thing. Several other reviews I've read seemed to expect more frequent combat, or that combat would be the main focus of the game. That's fair, because the car-based combat is cool and it is a big part of the advertising. But I feel like the narrative and "visual novel" adventure elements are the center-ring events at this circus. The car combat IS cool and fun - but this isn't a rogue-like deck builder with cars. Set your expectations aside. If you like a well-written story with a focus on characters, relationships, and original world-building; if you love noir films or books and that 30s "Old Gotham New York" style; if you like alternate history sci-fi; if you like your visual novels with a side order of tactical combat where positioning and manipulation of the environment are the keys to victory; you'll enjoy this game! I can't recommend it enough - I think that in what it strives to do, it succeeds overwhelmingly.
Fantastic game, 80% narrative lead storytelling, a bit of dice rolling, and really fun X-Com style car combat system. But what makes this game great is the story and the wild world. Set in a noir New York, Aether was discovered to make anti gravity devices. This includes allow entire cities to be floating. You'll be playing as Gia "Eight Shot", as she picks up a job to escort some fancy bumkin to the Lowers, where crime and corruption is rife. And from there a simple escort blows out to a greater mystery. Great voice work in this. The actress voicing Gia is superb. Everyone does a great job, I could have sworn Danny DeVito was playing one of the characters until I looked up the casting! So if you enjoy noir mystery narrative lead games, throw in some fun strategy combat, pick this game up now!!
I'm giving this a recommended just because people should try something that's a little bit new, but, this game's like a puzzle piece that doesn't quite slot in, but it looks so much like it should, you're wondering if it's a manufacturing error. Take the voice acting, for example. The script is fine. It takes an interesting approach with its future-noir style and old-tyme mobster/wiseguy speech. But, the game never settles on pronunciations for things. Gia's last name is alternately pronounced "ran-DOT-zo" and "ran-DA-zo", sometimes in consecutive sentences voiced by the same character. The writing in general is hit & miss with plotlines just not panning out in a satisfying way, or doing things that don't fit character. There's an obvious "don't trust this person" moment in the game and when it reaches its astoundingly obviously conclusion, the game has all of the characters just be like, "Damn, they were just so good at deception, how could we possibly have seen that coming?" Nellie, in particular took the game's writing from, "Ok, this is interesting" to "hit space bar and read". There's a point in the game where Gia goes from internally monologuing about how she's gotta show no signs of weakness when a Baron commits an atrocity right in public. You have to make a roll for it. And then immediately after succeeding, Nellie, runs over to the spot where people were unmade and starts calling as much attention to herself as possible. The UI makes it seem like she's literally the lone person standing in a spot of destruction, wearing a white outfit that's completely out of place for the scene. The game's inability to reconcile any of this meant that I was no longer invested in any of it. Gia's final, "woe is me, what do I do?" was a complete eye-roll of a plot point for me. Combat also feels unsatisfying in its own way. You have a wire variety of ways to be successful in combat, but none of them feel great. Swapping units into places where they'd get instakilled was the optimal move to resolve more combat situations for me, but, that move doesn't make any logical sense. It no longer has the feel of a 20s gangland car chase to me, it's just a sokoban puzzle now. I think I would have much rather enjoyed more of a Battletech or Front Mission style system where you're trying to target components of the car. I also really didn't like the turn order system where your units' action order for the entire fight is predetermined based on how you set it up in the menu. In the end, I feel like this game aimed for the stars, and ended up parasailing. If none of the issues I brought up hit you the same way they hit me, this will probably be an enjoyable romp for you. For me, at the end of the day, it was a chore to get through, and I only finished this once I didn't have anything else I felt like playing in my library.
This game oozes atmosphere from the art style to the writing. Characters you meet along the way draw you in with their dialogue and stellar voice acting performance. I'd often play for hours at a time wondering where the hours go by as I'm immersed in the story. The combat also engages the right amount of strategy for me, not too hard but not too easy either, allowing me to really make significant choices to the builds of my characters and cars. And the cars...I wish I had enough cash in the game to have all of them in my garage.
