My first experience with this type of game was Baldur's Gate 3, which I absolutely loved. I had never played anything like it before, so I had completely ignored Divinity: Original Sin 2 when it came out. The announcement of Larian's next Divinity game was also a big factor in finally deciding to give DOS2 a try. And it did not disappoint. I really enjoyed it. It is noticeably inferior to Baldur's Gate 3 in terms of quality of life, which can sometimes make DOS2 feel a little frustrating after coming from BG3. But that's understandable given that it's an older game and simply shows the natural evolution of the genre and Larian's games. Aside from that, the games are very similar, while DOS2 also has some of its own systems that are different rather than better or worse. I'm very glad I played it, and now I'm even more excited for Larian's next Divinity game. If you've played Baldur's Gate 3 but skipped Divinity: Original Sin 2 because you think it's too old, don't. It's a great game, and if you enjoyed BG3, you'll easily get another 100 hours of enjoyment out of it.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 is the only game where a perfectly normal plan turns into: teleport enemy → oil everywhere → fire everywhere → entire party dying → reload save. And somehow that’s exactly why it’s one of the best RPGs ever made. The world, the characters, the freedom, and the ridiculous amount of ways to solve problems, this game just lets you be creative. Or stupid. Both work. Also: 100% completed. My quicksave key is now permanently embedded in my keyboard.

As a big fan of Baldur's Gate 3 and after seeing that trailer for the next Divinity game during the Game Awards I figured I'd give Divinity 2 a chance and it did not disappoint. The companions although a smaller group than BG3 were just as well intricately written and compelling. The combat and levelling system was honestly better than BG3 due to not being constricted by D&D rules although there are elements of both that are great and hopefully the next game takes inspirations from both. The story was very compelling and the central setting of "Divinity" and all the associated questions raised throughout both the side quests and main quests were great. The atmosphere of Divinity 2 definitely felt darker than BG3 which was a welcome change. There's something about games made by Larian and how well written and compelling they are that will always bring me back to playing and replaying these games. 10/10

Yes BUT (and this is going to be a rant): If you're new to this kind of game like I am, throw away your pride and start the game on either Story or Explorer mode. The Classic difficulty is what is described as "normal" difficulty but unless you know every way to break the game it's going to be frustratingly difficult, on every encounter, all the time. It can be the lowest point of the game and entirely stop you from enjoying the game. Get used to seeing one person standing around and then having 10 more show up out of nowhere when combat starts. Don't let the notion of this game being CRPG and having no strict class fool you into thinking you can mix up the party and have different characters to fill out different roles - here everyone is DPS and you either focus on one type of damage or every encounter is going to last 20+ minutes. Having a tank is useless because the AI is program to laser focus on whoever has the least armour/health. Having a dedicated healer is useless because then you're lacking an entire person's worth of damage. Having a DPS mage is useless because past chapter 3 everyone can teleport and will beeline to kill your mage the first turn they get. Having high health is useless because then you're not putting enough points into damage. Also don't let the notion of this being a CRPG fools you into thinking you can play this game diplomatically. Persuasion is useless because anyone you can't persuade are probably not essential to progression, and if they're needed for progression then you can probably kill them for it. Actually you should not try to persuade since everyone is an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that even if you succeeded in persuasion check you'll want to kill them anyway. And also don't let the notion of this being a turn-based tactical combat fools you into thinking it's going to play by the rules. The AI cheats, and it cheats hard. You know how you're strictly locked into only having one active summon at a time? Well ♥♥♥♥ you the enemies can have multiple. What, that's too tame? Well ♥♥♥♥ you their summon can also summon, and their summon's summon can also summon. So even in fights where there's only one hostile person you'll end up fighting 10 anyway because ♥♥♥♥ you. ---------- Still the visuals are great, the soundtrack is amazing, the voice acting is wonderful, and the story is fun and most things are reactive to your actions. The combat is basically whoever can out-♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ the other side first wins and some people are into that, you may be into that. I'm not so I hate it, but otherwise the game is still a good experience.

BG3 was my first Larian game, so I went into this expecting something less complete or polished. Turns out I was completely wrong, I actually like this one more. It’s darker, more gory and nothing feels missing compared to BG3. The story, systems and overall design are all top tier. Can't believe I missed out on Divinity games all these years.
