Dec. 2025
After Long Night is a stern, systems-driven survival strategy game that emphasizes preparation, logistics, and tactical clarity over spectacle. Developed by 疯狗工作室 and published by OKJOY, it drops players into a ruined urban landscape where the days are for scavenging and construction, and the nights belong to relentless undead assaults. The game’s identity is rooted in that simple but punishing rhythm, asking players to build smartly, command decisively, and accept that mistakes compound quickly in a world that offers little mercy. From the outset, the loop is clear and purposeful. Daytime is dedicated to exploration and reclamation—tearing down the remnants of a fallen city for materials, securing food and energy, and laying the foundations of a defensible base. Almost everything in the environment can be salvaged, which reinforces a powerful theme of scarcity and reuse. Decisions about what to dismantle and where to expand are not cosmetic; they directly influence supply chains, build speed, and how effectively the base can withstand the night. The game excels at making the environment feel like both a resource cache and a looming threat. Base building is functional and tactically expressive. Walls, chokepoints, and defensive structures must be placed with foresight, as enemy pathing and wave pressure punish sloppy layouts. There’s a satisfying sense of engineering when a well-designed corridor funnels hordes into overlapping fields of fire, or when a last-minute barricade buys just enough time for reinforcements to arrive. Infrastructure matters just as much as defenses—power generation, processing stations, and storage capacity all shape how efficiently the settlement can grow and adapt as threats escalate. The RTS layer comes alive once combat begins. Players command squads with distinct roles—ranged infantry, heavy hitters, support units, and later, more specialized hardware—each contributing differently to crowd control and damage output. Positioning, timing, and target prioritization are key, especially during larger night waves when panic can set in quickly. Combat is readable rather than flashy, which suits the strategic focus; the tension comes from attrition and pressure, not from cinematic flourishes. Victory feels earned when it’s the result of planning rather than brute force. What distinguishes After Long Night is its restraint. There are no elaborate morale minigames or narrative diversions competing for attention. The systems are pared back to what serves survival: resources, defenses, units, and time. This clarity will appeal to players who enjoy sandbox strategy without excessive hand-holding. The trade-off is a steeper learning curve—misjudging expansion timing or unit composition can lead to cascading failures that are difficult to recover from, especially as the difficulty ramps. Visually, the game adopts a clean, low-poly style that prioritizes legibility over detail. The top-down perspective provides excellent battlefield awareness, making it easier to assess threats and adjust formations during chaotic moments. While the aesthetic is modest, it supports performance and clarity, which is crucial when managing multiple fronts. Sound design is minimal but effective, using ambient cues and combat audio to signal danger without overwhelming the player. The sandbox nature encourages experimentation. Some players will fortify a compact, heavily defended core; others will sprawl outward to secure resources aggressively and thin the horde before it reaches the walls. Updates and additions—such as new units and support options—have expanded viable approaches, and the systems are flexible enough to accommodate different playstyles. That said, occasional rough edges remain, particularly around unit AI and balance at higher difficulties, where small inefficiencies can be magnified. Ultimately, After Long Night succeeds by committing to its premise. It is a survival RTS that values discipline, planning, and adaptability, offering a tense push-and-pull between growth and defense. It may not court players looking for narrative comfort or gentle onboarding, but for those who relish methodical strategy under constant pressure, it delivers a compelling, no-nonsense experience where every dawn feels like a hard-won reprieve and every night is a test of the systems you’ve built. Played early access for about 20 hours. Game has good bones. Needs some quality of life love and jank reduction, but for $10, there's a lot of gameplay to be had. SEP 30th Full Release Early Notes The game is still not fully translated to English. I get it, it's made by a Chinese Dev. But the title characters look like farmers from Kansas lol. We're talking about key features in the menu and build section. Other than some jank and missing QOL features, it's a fun game.

this game still needs polishing but its still very fun to play i enjoy the rogue lite aspect in the campaign such as anything you research you carry that over to the next mission im looking forward to new missions in the future my only gripe so far are three things in total 1.the dialogue goes way too fast after the mission 2.some things are in another language but not in a way that breaks the game(like in the logging camp building three options to make wood boards, firewood or just focus on woodboards or just firewood but the dsiplay made it super easy to understand despite the language usage 3.lastly is building on elevation i just did this last night on a mission to get more space for my camp seeing as how it was flat open and easy to defend but the building system wasnt showing the tiles like green i can build there or red i cant and how close i was building things to each other etc that kind of thing i still could but i was doing it blind aside from those three things im loving this game very fun ill update this as time goes on i hardly write reviews for games hell this might be my first one XD haha update 1 dated September 26/2025 upon restarting the main mission it kept the stuff saved from before launching the mission so i essentially did not lose any progress fan freaking tastic

RTS State of Decay Is largely how this game plays with a stronger leaning to its RTS elements and not as much the survival elements due to its waved based and faster paced format. Overall, the game is exactly as presented in the trailer. So expect exactly what you see and nothing more. Honestly I think it is a bit of a shame the game did not lean more into a slower paces colony survival RTS over its more fast paced action RTS features. I would like to see game mode / map builder features that allow for editing of the day / hunger speed and removing the wave based zombie spawning for survival based maps and player made game modes. P.S. 1. The ability to build the concrete walls and corner walls would also be very nice. 2. Characters / Units need a 10 second sound effect cooldown. As clicking between many units and structures causes the player to get bombarded by sound effects. Especially when manually controlling vehicles.
