See the TLDR at the bottom With an engine change, total overhaul, optimizations, and a 3rd person operator mode which really shows off the eye candy and puts you in it, this game has cocooned itself from the pudgy worm it was and is going to bloom. I waited 3 years to do this review, so hopefully it helps. EVERY SINGLE. THING. has been lovingly worked on, with frequent updates and frequent revaluating, and betas, and openness. This game is 100% better than it was 3 years ago even though they had to put some of the features on hold while they fine tune it. This plays a lot like company of heroes on the RTS side, minus the squads, but thats a bonus because there's granular control. It plays like an FPS with the new third person operator. They did remove the civilian rescue action temporarily, which is a major economic lever, so the game is somewhat unbalanced ATM. The game is a little hard, but they have difficulty controls to somewhat even it out. There are a lot of branching upgrades which are useful, but could use some streamlining, optimization, and balancing, but they're fun to play with. I can confidently say this is one of the best EA titles i've ever purchased, and for a mere $20 its a steal. when its complete i hope they'll increase the price and reward themselves even. Also maybe get scarlet johannson's mug off the cover lol TLDR ---- Is it worth $20? Yes. Is it balanced? No, but they are working on it. Is there a lot of content updates planned? Yes. Do they have dlc bloat? no, it's all optional and unnecessary, but worth considering. they aren't locking gameplay behind them with an incomplete core experience, which is a major EA failing these days. Are they committed? yes, they update often and communicate well. Is it a good RTS? yes. Is it a good FPS? not really at the moment. Is it overall worth buying now? That depends on your tolerance for EA with major changes planned. Some might not, others might, I'm one of the people that says yes. Is it going to go down in history? probably not. I don't think that this is going to be a cross platform microsoft buyout like Minecraft, but its a good indie game for a select audience. Graphics: 4/5 - overall good but needs tuning for FPS mode. Sound: 3/5 - nothing memorable. Music: 2/5 - it does what it's supposed to do, but isn't like the Red Alert soundtrack or anything Creativity: 5/5 - there's nothing like it on the market in the best way. Polish: 2/5 - kind of rough with all the changes and balance things. Bonus: cheap price for content 17/25 = 3.4 of 5 a better than average EA title in its current state for the money IF you like hard games, RTS games with micromanagement, and have patience with EA titles.

TLDR: Buy now? No Buy in the next six months: Maybe Buy in a year: Yes It's an early access game it's had a rough development cycle and only really in the last 1.5 years and have the devs actually started refining the game. choosing to rebuild the game from the ground up, moving to a new engine, re doing every model, asset, and game mechanic as a result the game is incredibly barebones. Ive played the old build of the game and I see the vision the devs have the game and I believe they can do it but it's going to take quite a bit of time and the devs have admitted as such in their roadmaps and many weekly dev streams. The devs listen and do care! They host Q and A sessions with their community every week and even play the game with their community. I have seen many indie developers merely boast that they have a strong heart for their community but go months with no updates or no progress reports or sadly just take the money and run. Halcyon winds is different, it's a small team that share and report on every little detail of development no matter how mundane it is to the average person they stream it, and they ask for feedback on whatever it is their working on. You can literally vc with the devs every weekend in their server or so at any time.

Something to note: This was made on 11012026. I played this last one 10012026. Today there was an update. So, my criticisms may not be as accurate as they would be due to the update (which I have not played yet.) So, I will start by saying I have played since game for a long time, though I don't have as many hours it in to reflect that. I have played many builds in the game, including the build where the helos had copyrighted music. The game has improved in some ways and not improved in others. The first issue I will address is people saying that the devs have too big of ambitions and need to lower the scope of what they do and saying the new build is a step in the wrong direction. The new build is actually much higher quality than the older ones. The units are more responsive, the game feels better, the game goes faster, and the game runs better than in the older builds. While yes, some things were removed, the things I've noticed were removed were things that took from the quality of the game. Including the thing I'm about to address. The save system being removed seems like a dumb idea. The problem is, in my experience, the save system can bug out really bad between builds. Sometimes it just didn't work at all. But, it's not fully necessary since each game runs me around thirty minutes to an hour. I do have a problem with after bullying patient zero, the game doesn't end. Which is fine. I like dealing with the infection and protecting population centers. But, sometimes the problem is something will spawn under the map, in a rock, or merged into a building. So, if there is a victory screen, I can never trigger it for this reason. I also have a problem with being unable to see my impact on the game. I see the infection percentage, but I don't ever really see civilians. It's just empty. The old builds had civilians, survivors, and hostile raiders. This made things believable. So, after dealing with patient zero (which I used to abuse the radio operator for), I'd easily trap the infection. This is back on the treasure island map where you could blow the bridges. So, I'd have to evac civilians, and try to reach survivors in currently/formerly infected zones. I had no idea if these survivors were hostile or not, and I'd often deal with literal insurgencies of raiders. This was extremely fun, because it felt like my reaction to the infection had consequences. The faster I was, the better of an outcome it would have on the populace. I don't feel that way anymore. I see no civies, no survivors, only zombies. This makes it less believable and more arcadey. Another issue I had was the radio operator doing nothing. But, I'm sure they'll mess with that soon. Troops will sometimes drop outside of bounds, and sometimes the out of bounds areas aren't clearly defined. That last part is more of a gripe. The zombies sometimes seem to spawn out of nowhere. I can have an area completely blocked off and see infection. This in the old build was explained by infected birds or the worm. But, because these aren't observed, I can't often see where the infection comes from. I'm not too mad at it, because despite it making it less believable, it keeps me on my toes. I'd like to be kept on my toes without the loss of believability, however. This are my only issues with the game. Get it. Support it. It's really fun. It even has lore. THE DEVS MADE LORE. I don't know if it's still there, but they had like a novel or like comic or whatever. (I could be misremembering.) And, the lore was cool. This is just a passion project by the devs. And, it shows. I feel how much they enjoy making this. I feel how much they LOVE this game. And, I think it's worth checking out.

TLDR at the end. Great concept. Execution was Ok up until they realised you can't simply "Add coop" to their game in the middle of development. Now they're rebuilding it. To be fair, rebuilt version is decent, performance surprisingly good (RTX 4070, Ultrawide) and right now you can throw punches with the zombies. A lot of features are missing from OLD version of the game such as evac, few vehicles and maps. That said, I enjoy what rebuild has to offer simply because me and my friends can finally roleplay as CDC with guns and tanks. If you are old player waiting for polished coop experience of existing OLD version of the game - I'd say it's few months away. If you are old player who's been waiting for coop ASAP switch to public playtest on Steam. Regardless of which one you are, I believe rebuild version will be pushed to every player by the end of October 2025 with an option to switch to the old version via Steam. TLDR New players: Wait until end of October/November, check forums, make a decision yourself. Old player: switch to public playtest.
