Recommended. A compact twin-stick shooter whose combat feel, shop economy and log-driven lore were fully formed from day one, undercut by the worst camera of its trilogy and a finale that folds too easily. The assault rifle's damage upgrade, the Ion Spike's giant rounds and a surprisingly excellent flamethrower give the arsenal real character, and a one-mod-per-weapon rule (a second purchase erases the first) makes early build commitments permanent. Lore logs (a soldier's marital tragedy, a synthetic's manufacturing file) lay groundwork two sequels would expand, and the enemy ecology (healers, quill-spitters, shield-holders) arrives fully readable. Eight-direction camera cycling with the minimap chained to its facing makes orientation genuinely difficult, rooms loop and the map refuses to rotate, basic aliens and chargers dominate a thin roster, and the final boss dies near-instantly to upgraded hardware. Play it first in trilogy order and its flaws read as history; the foundation underneath repays the whole arc.
could be very repetitive, especially if planning to play the sequel games (assault, descent), but since i stopped at this, i think was mostly fun or okay. i also liked Conrad. maybe a bit of variation in missions or else woud have been good or different rather than just 'activate this', 'shut down that' or fire/error/malfunction etc all after one another, but i understand this is the kind of game that it is. maybe if the sequels were combined into one game, i would have pushed through rest including them as 15 missions, but as seperate sequel games that are mostly exactly the same, didn't feel like, but maybe could play sequels later.
This is a really good evolution of the original Amiga games. If you liked them you'll love these. Well designed levels and progression. Pushes you forward and doesnt waste your time....having just completed I say you are going to want to buy the trilogy as it feels fairly short. My only issues are the terminal screen is colour-blindness simulation being entirely in blue and the camera control is manual (something Ive heard is fixed in the sequels.) Will really shine as a 2-player which is part of what made the original classic.
